I liked Maleficent until they tried to make her some sort of tragic hero. Like... No, Maleficent is one of Disney's most iconic and evil villains. She's not supposed to be the hero. I get the ''different side of the story'' approach, but I'm not a fan of them going against their own canon.
I think Cinderella was pretty well done, though.
I'm right there with ya.
Maleficent is one of my favorite villains because she is evil for the sake of being evil. Sometimes a backstory is just not needed. I thought Maleficent (the movie, not the character) was pretty underwhelming. I wasn't too fond that they made the 3 fairies (called Flittle, Knotgrass, and Thistletwit in this movie) bumbling idiots...but that got me thinking.
I think I would have liked the movie a lot more had they don't a "same story, different P.O.V." movie. The movie would take place during the same time as the original (starting at the birthday party and ending with Aurora being awoken) but would be told from Maleficent's point of view. No backstory needed, and since she is our narrator, it would make sense that every "good guy" in the original would be jerks to her in the new one.
The backstory as it is in the movie solidifies the king as being a jerk. Had this backstory not occurred and the audience would have to decide if the king was really a jerk or it was just that we were being told a story from an unreliable narrator, it would have been more interesting.
Just my two cents though.
