Its 3.30am here in Aulani and I'm WIDE AWAKE so I thought I'd get started on this! I've never done a trip report before but I'll give it a shot, hopefully it will be as useful to someone planning a trip as other reports were to me.

The cast of characters are myself, DH, Harrison (age 3 and a 1/2 - the 1/2 is very important to him!) and Grayson (turning 13 weeks on Wednesday). Myself and DH have been to Hawaii twice before, once as a college graduation trip and once on our honeymoon. We've visited the Big Island, Oahu, and Kauai, and out of all three, Oahu was our least favorite. We stayed in Honolulu and thought it was just like any big city in the US, nothing special. But when Disney built on the island, I knew we'd probably be back here one day. This trip also includes my in-laws, DH's brother, his wife, and their 2 girls, and DH's cousin, his wife, their son and 2 daughters. Between us we have a 2-bedroom and 2 studios. After our week at Aulani, we're headed to Kona for our week, to stay at the Hilton Waikeloa Beach, one of our favorite hotels ever.

We were supposed to arrive on Sunday, but United Airlines had other plans! I woke up at 5.30am, super excited and ready to go, got dressed and thought to myself, perhaps I should check our flight status. Our flight from Orlando to San Francisco was delayed. By 12 hours. It was now taking off at the same time we were due to land in Hawaii from San Francisco! So now we would miss our connection. 3 phone calls and a few less than helpful customer service agents later, we were rebooked. Sunday afternoon we would be flying up to Washington DC, spending the night there, and then taking a nonstop flight from DC to Honoluu Monday morning. I'll spare you the details of our travel, but here are a few highlights and tips:

- I know this may come off as ridiculous, but if you can find a way to travel first class on a long flight, do so. We got the United credit card back in April and have been accruing miles since then. Last month we finally had enough to upgrade all 3 of us from coach to first class, and it made such a difference on the DC to Honolulu flight. We got lie flat beds, a wonderful hot breakfast, a burger and fries halfway though the flight, a warm brownie and an ice cream sundae, and the extra space helped us all to not go stir crazy on such a long flight. We can't afford to fly first class on long trips, but those miles were worth every penny it took to accrue them.

- Grayson slept for a total of 1.5 hours on the 10-hour flight. I'm grateful he didn't cry or have any kind of explosive diaper issues (my 2 biggest concerns for the flights!) but trying to keep him entertained for that long was exhausting! He likes to 'stand' and look at everyone and be sung to and generally given way more attention than I felt like giving by the end of the flight! With an hour left to go and me running out of energy for another round of 'The Wheels on the Bus' a flight attendant offered to take him for a walk. I accepted, and this wonderful man spent 30 minutes walking him up and down the aisles as they prepared for landing. He seriously saved my sanity!

- The crew in general on United were incredible. The pilots invited Harrison onto the flight deck before take off and let him wear a pilots hat and have his picture taken. He LOVED it! At one point DH was asleep and Harrison was trying to figure out the tv controls. I was trying to get up to help him without waking Grayson, when the flight attendant came over. Not only did he help Harrison with the tv and headphones, he retucked his blanket and gave him an extra cookie. They were just the nicest people, and totally made up for the airline messing up our original plans.

- We landed in Honolulu at 1.15pm yesterday (Monday). I don't know if we just happened to be the furthest gate from baggage claim, but it was a loooooong walk to get there. It did give Harrison a chance to burn off some energy though! Honolulu airport is also going through some renovations and we struggled to find an elevator for the stroller. In the end a very nice security guard (who didn't know where the elevator was either!) helped us carry the stroller down stairs. Just be aware of that when arriving!

We arrived at Aulani at 2.15pm and I swear, one sight of the pool and the beach and the characters walking around, and we were all bouncing off the walls, exhaustion forgotten. DH and Harrison put bathing suits on and were on the beach by 2.30pm. Grayson and I walked around and tried to figure out where everything is. We stopped by the Lava Shack to pick up 2 refillable mugs ($19.88 each) and stopped at Mama's Snack Stop for chili and cheese over sticky rice ($8.37) which was delicious. I ended up bringing Grayson up to the room to nap (of course NOW he's tired!) and around 4.30pm, DH and Harrison came back up too. DH's mom had made dinner in the 2-bedroom, fried chicken and potatoes and broccoli, so we all went over there to eat and Harrison got to play with his cousins. By 6pm however, we were all done, we could hardly keep our eyes open. We put Grayson in a pack and play and Harrison on the pull out sofa, and both were asleep within minutes. I went down to the shop to get milk and water, and came back up to find DH fast asleep. I think we were all out by 7pm.

Sorry this report has no pictures, I always hate that when reading but I will take photos tomorrow I promise! I can also answer questions or look things up while I'm here, just let me know! I'm off to try to get back to sleep now!

Oh man, delayed 12 hours! Wow! You guys handled that well, and the flight crew sounded amazing! =) I cannot wait to read more! We arrive in two weeks!! It will be my boys first flight, they are 8 and 6. Hoping they get invited to see flight deck as well, as they are pretty excited/anxious about flying.

Joining in!! What a rough start to your trip! The long flight from the East Coast without any layover sounds rough but so happy to hear you had great service from the United flight attendants :-) I am curious tho - did you get a refund on your Sunday night stay at Aulani? We are definitely purchasing travel insurance with our package to help cover any unexpected delays. The seats on the airline sound heavenly :)

Now that the travel woes are behind you I hope you experience lots of aloha and plenty of rainbows! We are headed there in a couple weeks so I'm really looking forward to reading your trip report. Here's a question for you - what dp the refillable mugs look like? Do they have a chip in them?

I'm not sure if they would have refunded us since we didn't ask. The rest of the family checked in and had checked us in too before they realized we weren't going to make it in until Monday. If we'd known earlier, I think we would have at least asked, although we're staying on the in-laws DVC points so I'm not sure what happens with refunds.

Thanks for the live trip report! First class sounds amazing!

Do you know if the path to the secluded beach past the Four Seasons is accessible again? I've seen reports that access was cut off due to construction on the Four Seasons but was hoping it would be back to normal now the resort is open.

The mugs look like the ones you get at WDW, but no chip. There are 2 designs; 1 has the characters and the Aulani logo, with either a blue or a green lid, and the other option is a little more subtle, with just a pattern and the Aulani logo. I think the second one comes in either red or blue. Next time I'm at the gift shop I'll take a photo of them.

There are 3 places to fill the mugs: next to the Ama Ama restaurant, outside the Lava Shack, and at the Ulu Cafe. The Lava Shack had blue Powerade, but the one at Ama Ama didn't, although that one had raspberry iced tea and Fanta fruit punch. Both had Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, and lemonade.

Edited to add that Ulu Cafe also has coffee and hot chocolate for the mugs.

Hmmm, not sure. Whereabouts is the path? I'll walk over later and look for you.

Monday June 28th part 1:

This morning started bright and early at 5.15am  with both kids waking up as the sun came up. Grayson had woken up twice during the night to eat, which is normal, but he usually sleeps until 9am, I guess he's still adjusting to the time difference. Harrison announced at 5.15am that he was STARVING so he was given milk and a granola bar to keep him going until our breakfast reservation at 9.30am. I showered and gave Harrison a quick bath, then he and I took Grayson out for a walk in the stroller so DH could get ready in peace (I'm sure he went back to bed...)

It was about 6.30am and I thought no one would be around, but there were quite a few people about. Lots of people jogging or sitting by the pool with coffee. It was quiet and peaceful and not too hot yet, it really was beautiful. I assume for the majority of people visiting, Hawaii is behind their time zone so everyone is awake earlier than usual, at least for the first few days.

We wandered around and took some photos:

It really was peaceful (especially since Grayson had fallen asleep!) We walked over to Ulu Cafe so Harrison could get an apple juice and some fruit, then walked to the little bar behind Ulu Cafe for a Kona coffee to wake me up. We sat and enjoyed our pre-breakfast on some pool chairs and watched the resort wake up.

About 8am DH appeared, and we walked around some more, really just killing time until breakfast. Finally the rest of DH's family came down around 9am, and we went to check in.

Breakfast this morning was at Makahiki, the character buffet. Once you check in, you line up to have your picture taken with Mickey. When we got to the front of the line, I could see we were going to be that family. My MIL can be more than a little bossy, and wanted about 20 different photos. The whole family, each individual family, just the kids, just the boys, just the girls, it went on and on. The line behind us was getting longer and longer and the poor Cast Member trying to manage the whole thing was looking more and more panicked. Finally DH said enough was enough, and we were able to move on. I felt very sorry for everyone in line behind us!

The one thing I've noticed here though is that everything is on island time - there is no rush. We checked in for our reservation at 9.15am, and after our photo shoot with Mickey, it was 9.30am. We were finally seated at 10am. I'm not sure if it's because we were a big group or if that's normal, but if you have kids, it might be something to consider. It's something I noticed at the quick service locations and the store too - everyone is so friendly and happy to help, but is all done at a very relaxed pace.

The food at the buffet was actually really good. I'm not a big buffet person, I feel like it ends up being more quantity over quality, but this was enjoyable. I wanted to take photos of the food but I felt like an idiot stood up there with my camera, so I wrote down some of the offerings in case anyone is interested:

Smoked salmon with cream cheese, garlic cream cheese, and capers
Tomatoes and red onions in olive oil
Salad greens
Bagels, toast, and pastries
Create your own omelettes with bacon, ham, cheese, tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, and onions
Fresh fruit (strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew)
Yogurts
French toast, pancakes, and Mickey waffles with syrup and caramel sauce
Scrambled eggs and Eggs Benedict
Tater tots and breakfast potatoes
Bacon, sausage, Portuguese sausage, and a grilled fish dish
Biscuits with sausage gravy
Some Japanese dishes like fried rice, miso soup, and a hamburger patty topped with rice, a poached egg, and brown gravy - no one in my party was brave enough to try that one!

They also had these guys:

image.jpeg

There were a few things I'm forgetting, I'm sure, but the selection was great and it all tasted good. They also had POG juice if anyone is a fan :worship:

The main draw of the restaurant is supposed to be the characters, but it was only Minnie and Goofy. Minnie came around quite quickly, but we were there nearly 2 hours before Goofy showed up. They did a great job with all the kids wanting photos and autographs, especially since Grayson screamed his head off when he saw them. I guess I'm just used to WDW where you get a few more characters at a character meal.

image.jpeg

I'll have to look up the prices of the meal, but I'm sure it wasn't cheap. The other thing was that there are inside and outside tables, but it is all open to the outside. This meant I saw a couple of flies around the buffet, and the birds were brutal - twice we had them land ON our table as we were eating! I'm not sure it's a meal I would do again, but it was nice to try it once.

After breakfast we all changed into bathing suits and hit the beach, but not before stopping at Aunty's Beach House to get the kids set up for the club. We'd all registered online and picked our activities and time slots, so there was just a little paperwork, verifying room keys, and taking photos of the kids and the guardians. All the kids except Grayson and my 17-month old niece were registered, and all would be doing Stitch's Space Goo in the afternoon.

Trying to find chairs at the beach at 12.30pm was tricky, but we finally got 3 together under an umbrella. DH took Harrison to play with his bucket and spade down by the water and I hung out in the shade with Grayson. He was pretty chilled out:

image.jpeg

After a while, the kids got bored of the beach and wanted to go to the pool. So DH, his SIL, and FIL took them on the lazy river. I was left to guard the chairs in case they wanted to come back, although I ended up taking the towels off 2 of the chairs in case someone else was looking. No one came and claimed them though.

Around 1.45pm everyone returned and it was time to get cleaned up for Stitch's Space Goo. We changed Harrison into shorts and a shirt, gave him some water and a snack, then DH took him down. I commented to DH that he hadn't had a nap yet today, but DH replied that he was just having too much fun to be tired :rolleyes1

You have to be at Aunty's 30 minutes before a program starts, so DH dropped him off at 2.30pm and came back to the room. Grayson was starting to rub his eyes and yawn, so we figured we'd settle him down for a nap, then have some time to ourselves. At exactly 3pm I got a phone call from Aunty's - Harrison had fallen fast asleep watching Peter Pan before the program had even started! Sigh. Off I went to collect him. I found him in the movie room, curled up on a mat with a blanket over him. I picked him up and brought him back to the room where I was able to successfully transfer him to our bed without waking him!

So now both kids are fast asleep, and DH and I are enjoying pina coladas on the balcony! I'll update again this evening!

love the early morning photos! *sigh* so peaceful looking. and your photo of the infinity pool is my favorite place at aulani. :)

looking forward to reading more!

p.s. grayson is soooooooo adorable!!!

Loving your report!! The infinity pool photos is spectacular! And your boys are adorable. Can't wait to read more!! And thanks for the heads up about what drinks are available. My kids have just discovered Gatorade. So I think they will be excited to try Powerade. :)

Kate, I'm loving your trip report! The pictures are gorgeous and the kids are adorable. Your reports are bringing back memories of the "oh so sleepless" days and nights of babies (or rather, parents of babies). You seem to be handling it in stride.

Monday June 28th part 2:

So when I left you, the boys were asleep and DH and I were trying to stay awake drinking cocktails and playing scrabble - exciting stuff eh?! About 5.30pm I decided we really had to wake them if we wanted any chance of them sleeping tonight, so I woke Grayson and DH woke Harrison. I definitely got the better end of that deal; I was able to get Grayson out onto the balcony and eating before he really figured out he'd been woken up. I had the patio door shut (FYI - the ac doesn't work with the door open) but I could hear Harrison crying and screaming at DH that he was tired and wanted to sleep and that DH was "the meanest daddy EVER" for waking him. Thankfully by the time Grayson was done eating the hysterics had stopped and we were ready to move on.

DH's brother and cousin were grilling steaks tonight, and his mom had made baked potatoes, corn, and broccoli. All this sounded delicious but it took FOREVER to cook the steaks! Harrison started whining that he was hungry so I offered to go down to Ulu Cafe to get him dinner. I took Grayson in the stroller and we walked over there. I picked up a kids chicken strips with fruit and a Dasani water for Harrison, a POG juice for myself, and then refilled our mugs with Coke and lemonade. I somehow managed to balance all this and push the stroller, only to get back upstairs to Harrison saying that, actually, he wasn't hungry:furious:

After some coaxing (and perhaps a small threat) Harrison ate most of his dinner, and eventually our steaks showed up too. I'm really glad we had the 2-bedroom on this trip, being able to cook dinner and eat sitting around in our pajamas with a movie on was so much more relaxing that trying to get all the kids ready and out the door on time for a sit-down dinner. I'm definitely looking forward to trying the other places to eat, but the option to eat in is really nice.

After dinner, I brought Grayson back to the room to feed him and put him to bed. There was a debate going on about going down to the lawn to watch Frozen, and I'm still waiting to hear if that's happened or not! I'm hoping we've kept Harrison up long enough tonight that he doesn't wake up at 5.15am again - I'll let you guys know tomorrow!

The infinity pool looks gorgeous - I have yet to set foot in any body of water here, I'm hoping that might change tomorrow! Grayson is at his most adorable when he's sleeping!

The Ulu Cafe refillable mug station has the Powerade too, and they have bottles of Powerade in the store. Only blue for some reason. I'm drinking a lot of it because I feel like I'm still dehydrated from the flight.

Lol the sleepless nights are top on my list of things I will not miss when the kids are older! I'm not sure we're quite done having kids yet either so I fear we have many years of very little sleep ahead of us!

Hmmm, not sure. Whereabouts is the path? I'll walk over later and look for you.

Thanks! If you walk from Aulani toward the beach and take a right there used to be a sidewalk that went past the (now) Four Seasons hotel. It's a beautiful little walk. When the sidewalk ended you could continue down a dirt path to a natural beach area and could find sea turtles there. It's a natural cove with beautiful sunsets!

Tuesday June 29th part 1:

We had an interesting night...

Grayson woke up at 1.30am to eat and then decided he had no interest in going back to sleep. No amount of shushing/rocking/pleading was going to convince him it was the middle of the night. At home I'd just leave him be since he wasn't crying, just fussing, and he'd probably put himself to sleep after a few minutes. But in this case, I was worried he would wake Harrison. Eventually after an hour, DH woke up (I might have thrown a pillow at him) and took him for a walk in the stroller. I went back to sleep and didn't hear them come in, but he said it only took about 15 minutes for him to go back to sleep. DH didn't want to risk waking him, so left him in the stroller and he slept through then until 6.30am. Apparently there were other parents doing he exact same thing, walking around the pool area trying to get little ones to sleep! So the time change must throw a few of them off!

So both boys woke up at 6.30am, and after getting everyone dressed, we headed down to Ama Ama for breakfast around 7.30am. This restaurant is beautiful; there were very few people there at that time, it overlooks the beach, and it was quiet and relaxing. This was our view for breakfast:

image.jpeg

Our server was very friendly, and talked us through the menu. So many things sounded good! In the end, DH chose the buttermilk pancakes with macadamia nuts and vanilla bean sauce, and I had the Belgian waffle with apple banana compote and Nutella sauce. Harrison ordered the kids continental breakfast, which was tropical fruit, strawberry yogurt, and a bran muffin.

image.jpeg

image.jpeg

Now my waffle was good, especially the Nutella sauce, but oh my goodness, those pancakes! There are no words for how incredible they were! DH wolfed them down so fast I only got one tiny bite, and he went on and on about them for the rest of the morning. We now have breakfast reservations there for Friday and Saturday morning! We also got a side of Aulani potatoes that were very good.

Harrison ate all his fruit, declared the yogurt to be "the wrong sort of yogurt" :sad2: and handed his bran muffin back to the server when she checked on us. So that was totally worth $9.

The manager came by to check on us, and it turned out DH knew him! This guy used to work at WDW and they had worked together about 5 years ago. DH was talking/complaining about WDW and the #thanksshanghai movement :rolleyes1 and this guy was telling us he's terrified they're going to transfer him back to WDW, he never wants to leave Aulani. I don't think I'd mind too much if DH was transferred out here!

After breakfast we changed into our bathing suits and hit the pool. Harrison has been learning to swim this summer and wanted to practice what he'd learned - he still has a ways to go! Then the rest of DH's family arrived and we kind of all took it in turns watching the kids. FIL took Harrison on the tube slide, which apparently Harrison did NOT care for - he declared it "too fast and whooshy". Then my BIL took him on the lazy river for a while. Grayson was content being passed from person to person as we tried to keep him out of the sun.

I have to say, the pool chair situation is a little crazy. The signs say that you cannot reserve chairs before 8am, but I saw a handful of chairs with towels on them as we walked down for breakfast at 7.30am and CMs walking past, not moving them. By 9am we could only find 3 chairs down by the fire pit, and only 1 was in the shade. For a party of 16, we were a little cramped! I know it's the middle of summer vacation, so perhaps the rest of the year it's not quite so bad, but I would definitely suggest arriving early if you want your pick of seating locations.

By 11.30am, Harrison was beat and Grayson was getting fussy. I took the boys up to the room while DH picked Harrison up some lunch. Harrison changed into pajamas, ate all of his chicken strips and apples, then fell fast asleep by 12pm. I fed Grayson and changed his diaper, but he was still being a little grumpy so I decided to take him for a walk so he didn't wake Harrison.

I'd wanted to find a store that might sell pull-ups (Harrison is potty trained through the day, but still in a pull-up overnight - it's a work-in-progress!) so Grayson and I set off for the shopping center across the street. Grayson went from being grumpy to screaming hysterically within minutes, but magically stopped when I stopped to pick him up. On the third round of this, I decided to just carry him and push the stroller. As we walked towards the lobby we bumped into Stitch, who proceeded to push the stroller all the way to the front of the lobby and out the front doors for me! He then patted Grayson on the head, waved goodbye, and walked away! It was very random but very helpful, and more importantly, Grayson seemed struck dumb by Stitch and didn't utter another peep when I put him back in the stroller!

The walk to the shopping center took about 10 minutes. I was surprised how many places to eat there were: a pizza place, a taco/Mexican restaurant, an ice cream store, a coffee house, I think I even saw a BBQ restaurant. Monkeypod is also located there, I think we're planning to eat there Friday night. The ABC store is located in the back on the right hand side, and is bigger than I had thought it would be. No pull-ups were to be found, but I picked up some fresh fruit, goldfish crackers, POG juice, and white wine - just the essentials! I was bracing myself for it to be expensive, but it wasn't too bad - maybe after Disney prices, everything seems reasonable!

I snapped this picture on the walk back to Aulani:

image.jpeg

So now I'm back in the room with a sleeping Harrison, and DH is in the 2-bedroom making pasta for lunch with Grayson. No definite plans for this afternoon, except to try to find this path past the Four Seasons to the secluded beach with turtles! I'll report back later!

Check out this thread about it first, Diser jtba actually has the directions documented with pictures as many people were having trouble finding it
here is the link to that thread
http://www.disboards.com/threads/ca...-directions-and-photos.3501609/#post-55557271

Wait, these sound like 2 different sets of directions. Do I walk towards the beach and go right, or out the lobby and down to the street? I assume both take me to the same place, but if I'm looking for a path to see if it's open, I want to go the right way!

They take you to the same place. The first one is if you are leaving from the Aulani beach/lagoon area. The link I posted is if you are headed out from the front of aulani walking on the sidewalk that runs in front of the resort but they both end up at the cove, just start from different places. Hope this makes sense...the reason people started going out the front and through the parking lot route was because the Four Seasons construction fence closed off access from the lagoon and you had to go out and around
