Mexican Riviera or Southern Caribbean and Why?

We currently have a 7- day Mexican Riviera booked, but now I am looking at the Southern Caribbean and those ports interests me more. We live in California, so the travel to San Diego would be much quicker and cheaper than out of Puerto Rico, but I have concerns over the warnings of violence in Mexico. What would/have you done and why would you choose that option?

And yes, I know, this is totally a first world problem!!! :rotfl2:

In spite of any dangers of traveling in Mexico, I recommend the Mexican Riviera cruise as it is so much closer for you than traveling to Puerto Rico. Chances are nothing bad will happen to you during a cruise to Mexico.

So, if travel proximity wasn't an issue?

We just did the Southern and it was incredible. We were on the inaugural stop to Bonaire. We loved it there! It is not built up and commercialized. The people were so friendly. We also went to St Lucia and Aruba. Our favorite Caribbean ports by far.

I have been reading up and these islands are considered very safe for tourists and have a low crime rate. I am liking the research I am reading right now!

We are also in CA. We've done 5 Mexican Riviera/Baja cruises. And Eastern/Western/and Southern Caribbean. For ease of getting to it, I loved the 10 night Sea of Cortes/Baja cruise we took on Princess (out of LA). If there were no travel issues (cost of flights) I'd do the Southern Caribbean again. Also enjoyed the Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises, but the southern one is a longer cruise and that's what we like to do.

We did the Western Caribbean last year and LOVED it!!! What did or didn't you like about the Mexican Riviera cruises?

Well, mostly the general "unsafeness" feel. Police walking around everywhere with heavy weapons in riot gear just unsettles me. Although we didn't get that a lot on the Sea of Cortes cruise. The ports were mostly small fishing villages and didn't seem to have as much police presence.

Oh, in that case I would prefer a Southern Caribbean cruise. But, if you're in San Diego, a Mexican Rivera cruise is so convenient.

True, but it the cruise itself is actually more expensive, has 1 less stop and not as desirable as the Caribbean (IMO).

I'd go with the Southern Caribbean because it would be much more different from California than the Mexican Riviera is. Vegetation, wildlife, architecture, cuisine.

I'd go with ports you're interested in vs. proximity, unless you're planning to have the ship be the destination. With the cost of Disney cruises, you should be looking forward to your cruise, not feeling fearful/dreading getting off at ports.

I agree 100%

We’ve done two Mexico cruises (and an EBPC that stopped at the same Mexico ports.) We live in Cali so those were definitely more convenient for us. We never felt unsafe and enjoyed them immensely. The flight costs to PR could easily cover 1/2 your cruise costs from San Diego depending on your cabin and party size. That plays into it for us.
The sea days are lovely as well, and the threat of hurricanes ruining your plans is considerably less along the west coast.
If other ports are more interesting to you then by all means chose the Caribbean, but I don’t think Mexico will disappoint.

If you switched to the Southern Caribbean I think you made a great choice. It's a long haul from the West Coast. It took us almost as long as flying to Europe, but I think it's totally worth it.

I did switch it. One of the other posters said what I was thinking, in that, if we are spending the money for a Disney cruise, it should be the itinerary we really want to go on, not just what is more convenient/closer to home. I have looked up the flights from Cali to San Juan and you are right, it will be a long haul, but that just adds to the adventure (at least on the way there)! On the way home, we will be exhausted and sad that we are off the boat! HAHAHAHA
