WISH - Disney Easter Eggs (warning: spoilers included)

I saw this movie 🎥 and plan to return to see it again on the big screen.
I watched every sneak peek preview and also went to HollyWood Studios to enter One Mans Dream Theatre to watch the extended trailer twice .
I am waiting to see the weekend box office .
I really like the AMC Disney Springs . The new exclusive WISH popcorn box requires batteries to Glow Golden .
I sat thru the ending scenes . There are words hidden in the credits .

Have you ever Wished Upon a Star ?
Do you wonder if Walt ever made a Wish too . I grew up in Kansas City and have visited
Marceline Mo. .. Wishes and dreams and a lot of hard work and love and family and friends .
But most important to remember from this movie
Even a Wish has a beginning : Maybe it was just a speck of pixie dust
Once upon a time .

I’m glad I did not see this spoiler list before . It would have spoiled the movie for me .
I would have been watching for the wrong reasons probably.
But it will be helpful this afternoon .
Thanks !

Not doing well at the box office... https://www.the-numbers.com/daily-box-office-chart

and now we can start wondering how many people wait for Disney +.

I am usually the one to go to a movie first in our friend group and I text them whether or not they should go see it in a theater or wait for it to be on a streaming service. For Wish I told them to wait. There is no reason to see this on the big screen.

And then we had a discussion if Disney / Pixar had put out a movie in the last five years that was worth seeing it on the big screen. We came to the conclusion that Frozen 2 had some scenes doing very well on a big screen, but everything after... not really.

(I did recommend them to see DND movie in the theater, and we did Barbie, but that was more to have a fun night out than that it was about the movie itself in the theater)

Alright, I'll be the Debbie Downer: It's a box office bomb. Disney needs to do some self-reflecting and course-correct soon. Audiences no longer want what Disney is selling. For a company that used to be THE name in family entertainment to suddenly start churning out these uninspired and bland "direct to streaming"-esque movies is disappointing.

They way Disney rebounds from 2020-2023 will be the true test of Iger's leadership.

Yes, it might be a box office bomb, but that is really to blame that they have Disney +, people know that it will be on there within a few months. Going to the theatre is still expensive for families and when you go, you are more likely to choose something you won't be able to see at home soon. They have killed their own theatre sales.

If it is a commercial failure will also depend on their merch sales and how popular Asha is going to be in the parks.

When i was in Disneyland Paris last week, there was a lot of merch out and I saw plenty people buying. Especially the stuff with Star on it.

My concern with putting Asha out in the parks already is that a relatively limited number of families has seen the movie. I do not expect chaos like with Frozen.

Don't mind me, just buying everything I possibly can from this movie.
Too funny. We were at the Disney Store today and I found myself glancing at the merchandise that I've been ignoring for the past month. I'm surprised that they don't have more with her friends or the ball of yarn. It reminds me of when we were searching for 4Town merch.

I found this image on a t-shirt. Is it just me or does it look like a Christmas tree?

Wish is hardly that type of movie - it is quite stylish and an intentional homage to older Disney movies that are generally held in high regard. I DO agree that there is a disconnect with what audiences want, but that's a different problem. Disney is doing what they have always done. The work is generally quite good.

Elemental was cited as a bomb too, but it legged out to be actually a decent hit. That said, the five-day is shockingly low, even lower than the reasonably modest projections. I'm losing faith in society, I swear!

Though it does seem like this Thanksgiving is low for the box office generally, not just Wish. I think we may never get back to pre-pandemic levels of movie-going. I think Hollywood in general has a problem, not just Disney, in that most movies will not make as much money as they used to since people will wait for streaming at home. In this regard, Disney may have a leg up in that at least their movies sell a lot of merch and have park characters drawing guests. But still a problem... I think streaming costs are only going to go up and up!

I really really liked it! Such a cute movie. And SO FUN to have all the references to past Disney movies. What a special way to commemorate the 100th anniversary (not sure that was the intent, but if not then the timing was perfect.)

I LOVED every song except for the first one. That one was okay but not super memorable for me. I liked the songs MORE than Encanto songs! 🫣

My only complaint is that for the first 20ish minutes the story moved too fast. I wish it had been 10 minutes longer and that more character development had happened in those first 20 minutes. Magnifico went from friendly to villainous WAY too fast.

But the rest of the movie was soooo great! We saw it as a group of 8 on Thanksgiving and we all really enjoyed it. I'm sad that the reviews aren't better because I think this movie deserves to be do well at the box office.

I give it a 9.5/10.
Agree with this completely! I also thought it moved a bit fast when setting things up, but that's my only knock. Maybe a few of the a Easter Eggs are a little on the nose, but we have to remember that most viewers aren't Disney super fans and will only get the most obvious references, so there's some for them too. It's a great movie.

While some of the Easter eggs were passable (ex. the friends as the dwarves), others were so insanely cringe that they made my eyes roll to the back of my head. Both Peter Pan ones and the Mary Poppins one even made my huge Disney fan sister groan. There's a way to do Easter eggs in a subtle, creative way and this movie didn't seem to nail that.

Anyway, Wish was like a 4/10. Generic story, boring main character, uninspired villain and musical score that sounds like top 100 pop hits rather than songs in a Disney animated feature.

According to Variety below, this Thanksgiving was a high for the boxoffice. Not pre-pandemic levels, but high for post-pandemic. DIsney can't blame this on people not going to the theater. People went to see Hunger Games and Trolls. They just didn't opt for Wish.

"Overall, this Thanksgiving stretch brought in $172 million in ticket sales, the highest tally since the pandemic upended the movie theater business. But it hasn’t lived up to pre-COVID times when revenues regularly topped $250 million. "

My main point is within your post - we're not at pre-pandemic levels even though for most, catching COVID isn't much of a concern anymore. So I don't think movies generally will ever make as much money as they used to if we're still only at two-thirds of revenue.
Side note: Wish came in 3rd at the box ahead of Trolls for the weekend.

ETA: not saying Disney doesn't have other problems to deal with, but not being able to rely on box office returns is certainly one of them.

2019 Thanksgiving weekend about 28.6M people went to theaters domestically.

2023 16.4M people went domestically.

Domestically D+ has 46.5M subscribers, so not that hard to see where some of the drop off is due to streaming.

Masses don’t always relate Dreamworks to Peacock, and the Hunger Games movies have danced around streaming services.

I have been trying to tell you, you are pretty significantly detached with what the average family in America wants. Remember you hated Top Gun Maverick, a huge box office hit.

Anecdotally, the only other time I've ever seen our lil theater so full of ppl was for the Mario movie.

Oh, please, man. that's ONE movie. I've liked plenty of movies that were big hits. I've also liked plenty that weren't. I just don't base my personal like or dislike of them on their financial performance.
