I will be going on a 7 day to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan with my 15 year old son.

What was the best excursion at each port that would be age appropriate for my son (meaning not too kiddy)?

I am definitely going whale watching, not interested in anything with dog sledding, helicopters, or hiking.

Has anyone done the Mendenhall Glacier Float Trip?

TIA

We did a zip lining excursion in Juneau. My oldest who was 14 loved it. In Skagway we did the Takshanuk Mountain Trail 4x4 and the whole family loved it.

Now were those both through Disney or you went outside and booked?

Another vote for the Takshanuk Mountain Trail 4x4, especially with a teenage boy. My then 14 year old loved it and still talks about how fun it was almost 5 years later.

Our favorite excursion was the Neets Bay Bear Watch by Float Plane. I know you said no helicopters, but this is by float plane so thought I'd mention it. We were probably 15 to 20 feet from the stream and watched bears fishing for salmon. There were tons of eagles as well. The hike to the viewing platforms is very short and on level ground.

The other excursion we did was the Alaska Whales and Science Adventure. Initially I was worried that my son would find it too focused on younger kids, but he loved it. He was the oldest non adult on there, but because of that he got to do the "dirty work", hauling in crab traps, hiking down to the river to take temperature samples. Honestly, he ate it up. Our guide was great and the boat only had about 15 or so people on it - so much better than those floating masses of humanity we passed. We also took a short hike to view the Mendenhall Glacier as part of the tour. We were on a small beach with a great view of the glacier with hardly anyone else around except our group.

Our son loved all three of these and I'd recommend any of them. All were booked through Disney. I hadn't really discovered online cruise forums at that point and we just stuck with Disney, so I don't know if you can book these independently or not.

I am reading the independents may be cheaper, I can always research. My 15 almost 16 year old who think she is grown would kill me for signing him up for a science adventure...lol.
I am second guessing not doing the helicopter, because of all the good reviews. But I do like the sound of the Bear Watch excursion. I may look into that one as well.

My husband and I ended up on the Science whale watching excursion after our photography whale watching excursion was cancelled. It was still fun for us but we both would have preferred the photography one

I would like to second the recommendation for the Neets Bay Bear Watch. We went on that excursion last August and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. The float plane trip was incredible and we even did a fly-over of the Wonder on our return. But the bears...oh my...just amazing. We saw at least 8-10 bears, including a mother bear with her two cubs that were only three months old. It was the first time that the guides had seen them at the river. The mother left in a hurry when some of the males showed up. I don't think it matters what age you are, it is such an incredible thing to see these massive beasts in the wild so focussed on catching and eating salmon. For reference sake, I was with my husband and two kids (4 and 8) and the hour we were there was one of the fastest hours of my life.

I booked things through Viator. We did a whale watch in Vancouver, which was great. In Juneau, we really enjoyed Mendenhall Glacier and the waterfall was the highlight of our trip I think. (we just got tickets for the bus) and Mr. Roberts Tramway (the hiking is beautiful up there.) We also hiked in Skagway (another beautiful hike.) Our zodiac boat excursion in Ketchikan looked awesome, but it was canceled due to high winds.

I just looked at the price for 3 and it would be about $1300. I am not too sure that will happen!

In general.... Vancouver whale watches feature Orca's. Juneau will showcase the larger and majestic Humpbacks.

For whale watches in Vancouver.... consider operators from Storybrooke (Richmond) where the water segment is shorter.

Looking into Harv and Marvs for the whale watching in Juneau

I agree, it is a very expensive excursion, but it was our one splurge. I had a tough year at work and it often impacted our family so it was a special thing that we will always remember. My son has been fascinated with float planes and bears since we was less than two so it was such a perfect fit. I don't think any of us will ever forget that afternoon. But if it wasn't such a huge passion for our son that rubbed off on the rest of us, we may not have done that expensive of an excursion. You have to do what fits best for your family.

While in Vancouver we did the float plane to Victoria with Viator - amazing!!! Zip-lining in Ketchikan, one of my favorites. Helicopter to glacier in Skagway and Whale watching in Juneau. All through Disney and they were great!!! Enjoy Alaska

May I ask? When you did the float plane in Vancouver with Viator, did you stay and tour in Victoria at all, or did you just take the flight and return?

It was the entire day. The tour included the float plane, a tour of the city and Butchart Gardens, back to Vancouver by Ferry. Worth every penny, a must do
