Has anyone ever been upgraded

Just curious if anyone has ever been upgraded from the DVC room they booked and what was the reasoning (i.e. Problem with the room, overbooking, lots of people on waitlist for the room you booked?)

It's very very rare. Certainly, one should not expect an upgrade nor should they request an upgrade.

The wait list wouldn't impact anything since if your wait list doesn't get filled it just lapses. Likewise 'over booking' shouldn't happen as once a particular category of villa is booked to capacity you simply can't book that villa anymore. I suppose a last minute problem with a villa in a totally booked DVC resort might result in shuffling someone elsewhere but that would be extremely rare.
W/ cash reservations Disney has marketing reasons for occasionally upgrading people or sometimes they overbook a category of room knowing they'll upgrade some people, but DVC operates differently and 99.9% of the time you get what you reserved.

Just the opposite, we had a room with a maintenance issue and the maintenance man called to the front desk to get us another room. We went to the front desk to get the new room and we were told that they made a mistake and didn't realize that we were DVC. No new room for us, I don't remember what the room issue was but we lived through it.

And the one thing you should avoid is asking for an upgrade when you arrive, because there have been reports that when such an upgrade was granted, the owner got charged the extra points it took for the new room.

Yes, we were once upgraded from a studio to a one-bedroom at SSR. Nothng to do with us; another guest wanted/needed our specific room for an unspecified reason. SSR was a fairly new resort at the time.

Last year we were indeed bumped from our OKW one-bedroom reservation (our home resort). There were "mechanical" issues and the resort was fully booked. The manager was extremely nice and we were re-booked at BLT (we had our choice of a couple of resorts with availability) into a fantastic one-bedroom unit with a gorgeous MK view. They also gave us a monetary credit. So, it happens. I was upset at the time - I really enjoy my time at OKW - but they did an excellent job of making it a positive situation.

Did you have any issues with your points or DVC account?

Complimentary upgrades at resorts get talked about a lot more than they actually happen. At DVC resorts, they're exceptionally rare, and generally only happen if the villa you were assigned had to be taken out of service for a maintenance problem or a refurb, and they don't have another villa of the type you booked. DVC is a timeshare, so overbooking isn't really a thing, and waitlists get filled (or not filled) in advance of arrival dates - they're not going to yank a booked villa out from under a guest on their day of arrival to give it to someone on the waitlist.

As noted, it happens but it's very rare, likely far more rare than with DCL. And as noted, it can create issues when the resorts rebook it so one needs to follow up to be sure they don't borrow or leave points in holding. For one time things Disney generally does a very good job when things happen, they've been a lot less stellar for larger moves esp the two AKV refurbishment issues where DVC left it up to AK itself who were slow to resort and did it poorly and extremely variably. Some got almost a free stay with free dining and others just got the adjustment for the difference in points. Booking AKV concierge 11 months out and ending up with SSR without anything substantial just seems wrong.

Yes. While Boardwalk was being renovated we were given a courtyard garden view instead of the standard parking lot view. We could even see the boardwalk at an angle.
We did not request an upgrade. We only asked for first available. We loved it at the points for a standard room.

Sort of twice last year, but never in my previous 10 years.
We were moved from our WVL studio to a hotel WL 1 bedroom"suite" for one night because our WVL studio shower was broken (black flecks all over shower, I guess it was a problem in the valve)
Then we were moved into a WVL "dumpster view" studio for the rest of our stay. We kinda liked the dumpster view, it was the last room (about a foot wider) and a dedicated studio (no noisy connecting door)

Before Christmas, we had a short stay that ended with 1 night in a BCV 1BR and 1night in an OKW 1BR. We checked into BCV, and then got a flier to call and extend the stay 1 night at a special rate. (But we already had 1 more night on points), but this meant our BCV room was available the next day.
When we got back from the parks, we nicely showed the front desk CM the flier and asked if there was any way to change our OKW night to BCV... She worked some magic and made it happen.
Although BCV was a few more points, I didn't have to worry about being charged more points because all 2016 points were used, and all 2017 points were already borrowed for this summers' trip :)

Twice over a period of 5 years I have gotten a pool view 1 bedroom at BWV instead of the standard view 1 bedroom I had booked. The last time was in March, and the villa we got was HA. It was near the elevators, in great shape, we were quite happy. The first time, we had a nice dedicated one bedroom with daily room cleaning. No idea why, and no problem with points.

Last November we were upgraded form standard view studio to Lake view for 5 nights at VGF. A family had a split stay and didn't want to move to the lake view room. They stayed in the standard room. The really nice part was the system thought we were cash guests so we had housekeeping daily. No extra points charged. Very nice treat at my favorite resort!

My upgrade history:
1. Once cause of over booking at VWL:
Booked a studio at VWL, when we tried to check-in, we had been upgraded to a WL 2 bedroom lake view suite. Called some family members to come and join us for an unexpected vacation.
2. Once cause of problem with check-in at AKL:
Booked a standard view studio at AKL-Jambo, checked-in, given a room key as the room was supposed to be ready, went to the room, and found suitcases and purse in the room along with the room not being made up. Went back to the front desk, they gave us an on-the-spot upgrade to a savanna view room in another part of the resort plus four free breakfasts.
3. DCL
Reserved an inside stateroom on DVC points but were upgraded to an ocean view room. We did not find out about the upgrade until we got to the room, what a surprise that was. When our luggage arrived it still had the old room number's tags on them.
4. AKL-Jambo
Booked a standard view room at 5 days out due to a last minute change in home plans. Given a Savanna View room.

Never, member since 2005 with 4-5 trips a year and never upgraded to a bigger room, nor ever upgraded out of the resort I booked.

Now back before DVC, paying cash -- CM discount for 8 years, almost always got an upgrade and even to another resort (value to moderate).

Upgraded twice:

Once at BWV from a 1-br standard to a 1-br pool view. More of a bother than an upgrade. A tree blocked any possible view. And they charged my credit card rack rate for the room. I noticed it midway thru my stay as I check my credit card charges frequently when traveling. They couldn't/wouldn't correct it though until I checked out, and by then my statement cycle had closed. Fortunately, they did correct it before my next card cycle payment was due.

Once at OKW from a 1-br to a 2-br. I was kind of a waste since the 2nd bedroom went unused. Again they were going to charge my credit card rack rate, but they said something at check-in that made me suspicious, and checked on it at that time and got it resolved so my card was never charged.

In both cases I have no idea why the upgrade.

Not an upgrade per say but moved and a bonus. AKL - Jambo standard view studio. Went to the room and it had never been serviced by mousekeeping. The tip for MK was still on the night stand. Called front desk and they moved us to comparable room on another floor and credited our account $100.
I just really wanted the room cleaned and I would have been happy. They went above and beyond imo.
