Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

BadgerGirl84, I love your term "family experiences." We also find family time away to be equal parts exhilarating and exhausting with our littles. During our last "family experience," I spotted a mom with kids about 5 years older than ours kicking her feet back poolside. It's coming!! I don't want to rush a day away, but it's good to know things don't stay frantic forever :)

LOL...when that time comes enjoy it because when they become teenagers they become high maintenance again. We just got home from 3 days away at a competition with my DD. Granted, she had very little sleep over the past couple of nights (she had early morning and late night call times) but when we got home after a 3+ hour drive she informed me that as her mother it was my job to feed her. I laughed so hard I was in pain.

Gina - I'm a long time lurker who is just starting to post but I always love your trip reports! They've definitely helped me plan my own Orlando trips in 2015 and 2016 so thank you for all your awesome contributions to the DIS. Looking forward to reading about your latest adventures!

Been away from my favorite TR for a few days but all caught up now! So glad you guys had a better experience at the Days and a wonderful day so far at SeaWorld (as usual).

R's mom is staying at the Vistana later this summer and I was telling her all about it when she was here for a visit... Mostly couched in terms of "I have this friend on the internet who always stays there and it looks SO nice". I think R (and probably the rest of our family) think I am crazy when I tell them details about something "Canadian Gina" has been doing in Orlando. Welcome to our family :flower3: That check-in experience was a doozie though. You are much kinder than I would have been. I'd have been at the main check in at 12:30 after being turned away by the VIP folks. :rolleyes1 Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip and see more yummy food pics!!!

Where did you see the flamingos on the sidewalk? I spotted this sign near the pass member lounge. We weren't allowed to that area of the park until nearly 10am.

Oh, yes, I have spent some time admiring/envying the mom reading a book by the pool while her 8-12 year old kids happily played in the pool. It looked divine!! I do make an effort to enjoy the "pros" of every stage my kids are in (hello baby snuggles and my toddler throwing her arms around my neck saying I Love You, Mama), but I'm honestly looking forward to the elementary school years for vacations.

That all day dining deal is starting to seem like a great idea! Wow, you were well-fed so far. Those "unwinnable" games are annoying! We know if it can be done, your husband would find a way :)

The grounds are so pretty! It's just a lovely place to relax and stroll, punctuated by a lot of fun things to do!

Maria :upsidedow

We almost always purchase the all-day dining when we know we will be at the park for virtually the whole day.....and its been a great value every time. We totalled it up, and our per-person savings on this visit was over $20 (in the guys' cases, it was almost a $30 savings each). It is so nice to be able to eat and drink all day long without having to reach into our wallets each time.

Next time, tell them to throw the whole bucket at once. That's my trick at county fairs!

First time commenter; love your TRs!

:welcome: 25eels! Glad to have you reading and joining in the chatter :).

I think your method is a great one....we will have to give that a try when we visit again in October. Especially if they still are offering minions as prizes! :teeth: Steve will most definitely want another kick at the cat.

So it looked like the penguin ride was operating today (at the least, there was no sign at the entrance to Antarctica). I'll check again tomorrow

I love your duck picture! I don't know why, but I am fascinated by ducks (all birds, actually). No matter which park I'm at, I could watch them all day

I have to say- your description of the ring toss attempts (especially flinging with purpose) made me laugh!

Can't wait for Mako! I haven't been to the little show thing, but I'm hoping they may do previews early

I am so glad to hear that the ride portion of Antartica was back open :thumbsup2. Maybe I just timed our visit during some sort of annual refurbishment?

I'm here and all caught up! I am loving this TR. Gina, I actually look forward to YOU going on vacation so I can read your reports! Your ring looks fab and it was clear how special if was go you getting your husband and son involved.

We have two young girls (5 months and 2 years) so we now call our trips "family experiences" instead of vacation because they are a lot of work and exhausting. I'm thrilled to say that DH and I will be going alone to Universal and staying onsite for Labor Day weekend! I'm calling it a "Gina style trip" lol.

My biggest regret is that we didn't have the opportunity.....or the financial resources....to travel to Orlando when Jake was tiny. Even though those kinds of excursions are huge undertakings with little ones, the memories you make (and the experiences you have togehter) are life-lasting. We have already vowed to take our grandbabies with us on vacation when that stage of our life comes. We may not have been able to give Jake those kinds of opportunities at a young age, but we can hopefully do so for the next generation of little Bo-Binas :goodvibes.

I'm here quietly following along loving your report. I'm so happy for you that you did the pick a pearl. So many times moms everywhere put everyone else first. You deserve it!!!

Aw, thank you!! :goodvibes I think the boys really enjoyed the whole experience, too....and I know it made them happy to see ME so happy.

We are on the other end of the spectrum.....the kiddo is grown, the couples trips are becoming more frequent than the family trips, and we often feel rather wistful that time has passed so quickly. While we LOVE our couples trips (and are excitedly counting down to our October "just the two of us" getaway), we still sometimes find ouselves missing the moments we all shared together in the south. I don't think you can ever take the parent out of a person's heart.

LOL...when that time comes enjoy it because when they become teenagers they become high maintenance again. We just got home from 3 days away at a competition with my DD. I hope you rolled up your sleeves and starting cooking. Or immediately placed an order for pizza ;).

We have been very lucky with Jake in his teenaged years. As long as he was rested and fed (and we indulged him in some shopping at regular intervals), he has been a very agreeable sort. The three of us are all very compatible people, so travelling together (even when he was a teen) has been pretty easy. Quite honestly, I think boys are often the most difficult around the 12-13 year old age range.....that's when their hormones make them the wonkiest. Girls hit that stage several years later.

LOL, thanks for 'adopting' me! My sister will probably be happy to see me absorbed by someone else's family :lmao:.

Steve is a bit wary of the VIP check in on our October trip, even though our arrival is supposed to be personally overseen by the resort manager. He's definitely once bitten, twice shy .... but I'm working on him. It might take me the next 150 days to convince him that they deserve a second chance. Hopefully my trust is not misguided! :rolleyes2

Love those gardens, they are so pretty. We always get such great pictures of the kids in there.

It always amazes me that we never see the horiticultural team working on the flowers and foliage. Its as if its an effortless process for them.....the gardens just magically take care of themselves. The must have an incredible amount of people working both before and after park hours to keep those gardens THAT gorgeous.

Where did you see the flamingos on the sidewalk? I spotted this sign near the pass member lounge. We weren't allowed to that area of the park until nearly 10am.

It was just before 10 am, on the path between Journey to Atlantis and Manta. From there, they walked them back to an area next to Stingray Lagoon.

Another great report. Sorry the guys didn't win a minion on the ring challenge. Can't wait for the next installment!

No worries....they had a lot of fun trying nonetheless :thumbsup2. My guys LOVE their carnival games!

My apologies to all for the lack of updates over the past several days. Its a long weekend here in Canada (Happy Victoria Day to my fellow Canucks!), and our weather in South Eastern Ontario has been simply divine. We've been working in the gardens, cutting the lawn, putting up our gazebo, getting out the patio furniture, taking long walks in the sunshine, and basically doing everything BUT sitting inside on the computer.

However.....another installment is coming, I promise! :thumbsup2

Hopefully by later tonight I will at least wrap up our day at SeaWorld. I hate to let things stall when it comes to my trip reporting, but this weekend's weather was so spectacular that we had to take advantage of it while we could. A week ago today, I still had my furnace on .

A huge to everyone reading along.....I am always grateful for those who choose to spend their leisure time perusing our vacation memories. We are officially one week back from our most recent adventures in Orlando, so its high time a report gets (finally) underway . I certainly can’t say that we are settled in and organized yet (we are now in the midst of some minor home renovations, so life is more chaotic now than before we left!) but we’re coming along. It’s a process, albeit often a slow one.

For those of you who may have missed my pre-trip report, you can read about what transpired in the months before this vacation here:

http://www.disboards.com/threads/wa...ersal-seaworld-an-april-may-2016-ptr.3483799/

I am not going to re-hash the past.....the PTR details everything quite well, so for any new readers, I suggest you crack yourself open a cold diet Pepsi, find yourself a comfy chair, and start there. Those that already have the background covered, we shall waste no more time before jumping right in.

Some introductions for any new friends who are joining us:

We are Steve (44), Gina (42) and Jake (20).

A little background on who we are.....

Steve just got a promotion earlier this year, and is now a Manufacturing Engineering Technician for an auto parts manufacturer. Jake just completed his post-secondary education in the weeks prior to our trip, and has accepted a job as a Child & Youth Worker (Weekend Supervisor) at a local group home for at-risk male youth. I am the Office Manager for an insurance and financial planning firm. We all also have at least one “side” job (in Jake and I’s case, we have two!) which helps to fund our vacation addiction. Or would that be ‘obsession’? Either way, it sure helps make sure that our Florida vacations have become a regular indulgence: three times in 2015, and this year, twice (10 days in the spring, and a full two weeks just for Steve and I in mid-to-late October).

As a general rule, I thrive on planning our southern getaways and that’s A-OK with my boys: if they were in charge of planning a family vacation, we’d be going to an all-inclusive and only finding out about it the night before . They love sports, theme parks, big thrills and food. I am more of an “experiences” kind of gal....as I told a friend last night, as a general rule I don’t like to be shaken, spun, dropped, startled, dangled, surprised, or perched at precarious heights. I also don’t like loud noises (cue the yawns, LOL!). But somehow, we always manage to find that perfect mix of things to do that satisfies everyone’s vacation wish list. The Disboards contributors and my awesome Florida friends are always a big part in my planning successes. Thanks to the many other trip reports here on the boards, I often come off as a genius in my fellows' eyes. These reports can be the most excellent way to share some pretty nifty ideas.

This specific vacation was Orlando trip #10 for Steve and I (number 8 for Jake, who didn’t come with us two of our three vacations in 2015) .... and it just felt “significant” for some reason. Well, for multiple reasons actually.
  • It was our 10th trip to Florida ... double digits, baby! I certainly could not have seen that milestone coming when we were planning our first (and supposedly "once in a lifetime") Orlando expedition in 2009.
  • It was most likely our last trip as a family for quite some time, now that Jake has graduated college and secured himself full-time employment.
  • We were celebrating our 23rd wedding anniversary on this getaway (May 1st ).
  • We were celebrating Jake’s graduation (where on earth did his childhood go? ).
When the initial plans were put in place, it was anticipated to be a very simple, basic, budget trip (after all, our Canadian dollar is still in the toilet and the exchange sits at 30% or worse)......but since coming home from our Christmas vacation in late December, the itinerary grew more and more fantabulous with each passing week. Much of that was directly a result from the most wonderful, amazing, and generous gifts from very special friends.......and to those very incredible folks, all three of us send you our heartfelt thanks. There were many, MANY times we raised a glass in their honour over the course of our trip : we never lost sight of how many incredible experiences were a direct result of their unbelievable kindness. Our initially "basic" trip was nothing short of EPIC.

Over the pages and posts to come, I will detail our adventures at SeaWorld, Aquatica, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, CityWalk, and in St. Petersburg. You will hear all about our stay at our home-away-from-home, the Sheraton Vistana Resort, as well as our experiences at our park-and-fly hotel in Buffalo and our two-night stay at the Residence Inn SeaWorld. There will be mini golf, shopping, a baseball game, a behind-the-scenes tour, and a dolphin cruise.

There will be food porn .

There will be minions! :teeth:

There will also be the end of the dolphin tale.....but not until much, much later ;).

You will hear about our high points and an honest review of the things that didn't go quite as planned. There will be pictures and prices.....and hopefully, lots of questions, comments and other input from you, my readers.

So with that, I declare this trip report officially open! More to come soon!

PS....a big thanks to @dsmom who has recently re-awakened my love of all things Dr. Seuss ....hence the inspiration for the thread title :goodvibes.
Can't wait to start reading. We had a great trip this year and I just booked our flight for next April.

Yep, heater on this morning and air conditioning may be in use by the end of the week. Wacky May. :flower1:

Ready for the next installment. Thunderstorm has now moved out of town. My garden has been well watered lately.

We understand in Seattle. I thought the rain might hold off long enough yesterday that I could mow later in the afternoon. As soon as I saw the rain clouds coming I knew I had to do some of it right then so I hurried, got on the rider mower and took off only to run out of gas because I forgot to check :rolleyes2 Thankfully we had gas, but I had to carry the heavy can across the yard now. Got the backyard done, it was the worst. Still have the front that grows slow and the side yard that is passing bad to worse to do. Looking at a scattered showers 3 day weekend I think. Nice that you got to enjoy your weather, a friend that lives in Toronto posted some nice pictures over the weekend of your weather.

I was just coming into say I was behind on the trip report because we were at the cottage for the long weekend. What a gorgeous weekend it was indeed!!!:sunny:
All of my gardens and planters and baskets will need to wait until next weekend for planting, but we had an awesome weekend at the lake. Now that we are all settled in at home again I will eagerly await your next instalment.:goodvibes

LOL! I think this can happen in Buffalo, too!

Absolutely!! ::yes:: All the folks who live in the northern US states can definitely feel our pain!!

Can't wait to start reading. We had a great trip this year and I just booked our flight for next April.

Yikes, sorry to hear things have been so soggy in your neck of the woods :headache:. We've actually had it a bit dry for this time of year. Steve and I went for a walk earlier tonight and there were several folks watering their lawn. We could use a shower or two to help keep everything green :umbrella:.

This has probably been the most delightful May long weekend weather that we've had in many years. I am not sure what we did to please Mother Nature, but she was definitely smiling on us the past three days. I am sending you west coasters some sunny thoughts :sunny: ... its always frustrating when the lawn is growing but the weather isn't co-operating long enough to maintain it!

I figured you were enjoying some fresh northern air on this gorgeous long weekend :). Glad to hear you had such a fabulous time! It's going to be hard heading back to work tomorrow......weekends like this definitely put a person in a summer frame of mind :beach:.

Sunday, April 25th: SeaWorld, the conclusion (LOL....it’s about time!!)

After wrapping things up at the pretzel toss game, we strolled over to Shamu’s Happy Harbor.

While we were admittedly just about the only people in that section of the park without at least one small child in tow, we were not deterred: I have a soft spot for the Sea Carousel, and my guys were happy to indulge me. Thankfully this area is not only for the young, but also the young at heart :p. As it was in the balance of the park, this area was also unbelievably uncrowded and the carousel was a walk-on and running literally at one quarter of its available capacity.

We walked around for a little bit, taking in some of the various attractions that the park boasts for the wee folks. I don’t normally like to take a whole bunch of pictures of the little kids area when I don’t have a small child of my own, but since there were so few people milling about, I thought it was a good time to grab a few shots. This part of SeaWorld is so adorable, and I can just picture us bringing our grandbabies here to play someday.

LOL, I can just picture Poppa Steve training those wee kidlets to love the games like he does :rotfl2:.

After our foray through Happy Harbor, we decided to make Wild Arctic our next stop since we hadn’t visited that attraction since August 2014. On our Christmas visit a few months prior, it was converted (as it is each holiday season) to the Polar Express experience. While I much prefer this ride as the Polar Express, Wild Arctic is also worthy of a ride....especially when it ends with visits with sea lions, beluga whales, and walruses!

My only complaint is that the ride, which simulates a helicopter flight over the frozen Arctic tundra, makes all three of us ridiculously nauseous if we partake of the motion side (lesson learned in August 2014...and we paid for that decision for hours afterward ). It’s odd for Steve and Jake to suffer from motion sensitivity (they can ride coasters without batting an eyelash), but this one really messed us up for some reason. Both sides of the attraction were a walk-on (literally a completely empty queue!) so we all voluntarily and wholeheartedly agreed on the non-motion “walking tour”......just to ensure we all felt as awesome for the rest of this day as we had up until that point.

It was a good choice. We were fit as fiddles as we headed into the animal viewing areas to check out the awesome creatures housed in Base Camp.

Unfortunately for this report, the lighting in this attraction is very, very dim....and the animals are surprisingly active. Those two conditions added together make for some pretty dismal photos unless you carry a much more elaborate camera than I do to the parks. I would have loved to have shared some pictures of the ENORMOUS walrus and the breathtakingly beautiful beluga whales, but my grainy and blurry photos didn’t do either of them justice. So you’ll have to take my word for how awesome they were....or better yet, plan to visit SeaWorld on a future trip so you can experience them for yourself ;).

A crowd pic:

......and a shot of base camp:

We exited to the gift shop.

The topiary garden is just between Wild Arctic and Shamu Stadium, so we walked through there before heading back across the bridge. I know I have said it before, but the SeaWorld gardens are just so amazing.

Our energy was starting to fade fast at this point. We had walked what felt like a million miles and hit just about every must-do on everyone’s list for this first SeaWorld day. One of the only things left on today's SeaWorld wish list: Jake wanted to pick up something special for his beloved Nan and requested that we stroll through the shops at the Waterfront to see if he could find just the right item to take to her. Since there were no other specific attractions that anyone wanted to hit, that’s where we headed next.

This is easily my favourite shopping area in the whole park. One store runs into the next that runs into the next, and while each little sub-store has its own distinct focus.....together, they have almost everything ::yes::.

We milled about the stores for a bit and found some GREAT stuff to buy (with our 25% off discount card applicable to all items, wahoo!) and then decided to grab dinner on the all-day dining plan before dragging our weary bodies back to the resort. In the interest of trying something new, we headed to the Expedition Cafe at Antartica....we had never eaten here before on any of our previous visits, and the menu looked intriguing.

The Cafe was set up in three different and distinct stations: American, Asian, and Italian.

There was a large display at the end of the ordering area which showcased how you would grow food in places like Antarctica where soil was largely unavailable. It was rather interesting and went along great with the theming.

Once you ordered and received your meals, you took them to Penguin Hall where there was ample seating themed to an Antarctica base camp: complete with camp decor and the “Antarctica radio station” playing over the speakers for guests.

Just by fluke, all three of us ordered from each of the different stations. Steve had the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy and biscuits from the American station (sadly, there is no photo of his meal....how did that happen?) while I had the orange chicken and fried rice from the Asian station:

Jake opted for the Alfredo pasta from the Italian station:

Each of us had cookies as our dessert selection (which were oddly limited at this location). In fact, unless I’m remembering wrong, I think cookies were the only dessert side from which to pick here :confused3.

The entrees themselves were hit or miss. Jake loved his pasta dish....it was hot, fresh, and quite tasty. My orange chicken and rice was good: not fabulous, but quite acceptable considering this was not your neighbourhood Chinese restaurant. Steve’s fried chicken entree was a bust: the chicken pieces were meatless and overcooked, the mashed potatoes were cold, and the biscuit was dry. I encouraged him to take it back but he was happy to eat the little bit that he wanted and share off of Jake’s and I’s plates as well (we all had way more food than we needed or wanted, especially after the guys eating pizza from Seaport mid-afternoon). By this point in the day, I dare say we were almost too tired to eat anyway :faint:.

After dinner, we were all ready to call it a day. As we headed out of the park, we stopped at Adventure Photo to have the “magic” elements from some of the morning pictures added to our account (having learned from experience on previous visits that the magic is not automatic):

...and then we shuffled ourselves to the car. It had been an incredible day, but we were exhausted.

Back at the resort, we dropped our weary bodies into the hot tub and enjoyed a long, leisurely soak under the stars. We all headed to bed at a reasonable hour, as plans for the following day called for a full day at Universal Studios....Jake’s first visit there in more than 4 years.

A full day of fun at Universal Studios.....and our first Butterbeer of the trip! :drinking1 ... is coming up next!

That was quite an epic Seaworld day! Did I miss it, or did you guys skip a lot of the shows? I can totally picture a little grandson taking his first swing at the target to win his beloved Grandma a Minion.

That looks like it was a fabulous day! I loved getting a look at all the different theming. I'm looking forward to our visit! I'm not sure if it will be on the October trip or the March Break 2017 trip (which Dh has now seen the light on lol).

ETA) GO RAPS!:cool1:

Great wrap-up of the day. I love the garden photos and can't wait to see them in person. We haven't yet mentioned SeaWorld to our kids for June as it has been kinda a last minute plan that still isn't 100% but about 90% right now. I am looking forward to going back again...even more after your great report! ☺
