TSA throw's out childs buzz lightyear WDW souvenir

Absolutely. A green and purple toy does look too much like a real gun. Where do they buy their guns??

I hope he is able to get a new toy! Those buzz lightyear guns look nothing like real guns. I guess they were visiting family since they flew out of FLL and I can't imagine driving the 4 hours down to FLL for a cheaper flight. I wonder if FLL TSA just isn't use to the Disney souvenirs so got too aggressive. Either way it was over the line.

" Levi and his father only packed carry-on's for their trip."
I agree that this probably doesn't fall into "replica firearm" but couldn't he just turn around and check the bag in. That is allowed.

Yeah, but once TSA took the toy from him, they weren't going to give it back so it would've been pointless to check it in.

I wish I lived closer to Orlando, I'd go buy him another one and ship it to him. Poor little guy :-(

Yes, that's true. He could have paid $25 to check his bag. But maybe that toy is worth less than $25? Then you're just losing money on the stupid toy.

The point shouldn't be "they could've checked their bag"...the point of the story is "how f*&!*#ing stupid is TSA to think that a plastic toy that looks nothing like a real gun should be confiscated".

I think they should've told TSA it was a special flying attachment that Buzz needed to hold onto in order to fly.

In no way would any normal person consider this thing a toy gun like those army-style water guns they sell. This thing was even less a gun than a super soaker.

I went to the ponderosa ranch 20 years ago and they threw out my toy guns, with all that's going on in the world I don't blame the tsa I want to stay safe at any cost

This happened to us several years ago with the 3 inch replica pistols our grandson had from adventureland. Unfortunately, it was too late to check them, BUT, I called Disney to check about buying new ones and having them mailed, and they sent us new ones for free! We were delighted!
It never occurred to us that they looked like anything but toys. Looking back, I was pretty naive. But Disney did come through!

My cousin, a total POTC fanatic, brought a POTC gun and packed it in his carry-on. I looked over at the XRAY as his stuff was going through and saw the clear-as-day outline of a handgun :faint:. TSA did not approve or find it amusing. Then again I don't think they are capable of finding anything amusing. I have been in many airports and have yet to see one smile yet.

I managed to bring a pretty decent sized knife through the airport accidentally. I was in Alaska and got a knife engraved with my dads name on it for him and threw it in my giant purse where it stayed unnoticed by me until I went through airport security. Went thru the scanner and nobody cared. This was about 2 months ago.

I don't think TSA followed proper protocol here.

When I had a snow globe confiscated (stupid liquid ban!) at O'hare a few years back I was given the option repeatedly to go back and check my bag with it in it. Only when I stopped trying to convince them to let me bring it through and ran to my flight did they physically toss it.

It says realistic replicas must be checked. Seriously- how realistic could a Buzz Lightyear gun appear? Anyone have a picture?

A couple of years ago we were going through TSA in SLC. My younger son who was probably 6 or 7 at the time had bought a toy bow and arrow set on the trip and had it in his carry on bag. Essentially the bow was a flimsy piece of plastic with a rubber band attached to it and the arrows were plastic and styrofoam with suction cup tips. The young agent opened the bag and told us that this toy could be used as a weapon and told us it would have to be thrown away. I looked at him and asked if he was serious. My son was ready to cry. Fortunately the agent called an older supervisor over who looked at the "weapon", started laughing, and told us to go ahead and pass through.:)

The problem is the TSA's own rules are too subject to interpretation. This is what is ALLOWED in carryons according to the TSA web site:

Toy Weapons (if not realistic replicas)

So it is up to the gate to decide what is a realistic replica. But we've all heard it being interpreted strictly and even bright colors of plastic guns have been confiscated and even toy light sabers confiscated.

Yes, but rials are showing the TSA misses over 75% of the banned items that pass through the check points. If someone wants to terrorize at an airport they are going to do it regardless of how hard the TSA works. Maybe they should concentrate on real threats and not toy guns.
