Closing a popular ride??????

We were at HS a couple weeks ago and rode TGM. So glad we did. I am also sad to see it go. I understand the contract and all but I do think it will be missed. I could be totally wrong, but I am guessing the ride will be set up similar to the short films at Epcot except it will be a Ride experience. Any one know a date on when they might open it again? I feel they will not leave that big building empty any longer than necessary.

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is estimated to open Fall 2019.

Yes, some good points but the old rides are always great to see (Carousel of Progress) and the movie at the end of GMR was just so great IMO. I can still hear Marlon Brandon screaming "Stella" (I think it was him, lol)

I love the old rides, but of the difference between CofP and GMR is that one is an attraction that needs no background info to enjoy, and the other is only relevant to those folks who are genuinely into those old classics. I had to drag my family onto it on our last visit, for them it was a waste of time. Of course they enjoyed it ONCE, tolerated being hauled onto it again, and then on maybe one more trip after that, but that was enough for them. I htink if I tried to drag the teen on it If this was a first trip she would probably not forgive me for a while! LOL!

I'm also in my mid 40s and have seen most of the movies depicted. I will miss it and hate to see it go. IMO, the only thing stale about it is the spiel done by the CMs and the fake hijacking.....and I have read that some people have actually decided to watch some of the movies due to the ride. I know the preshow is what made me watch "The Searchers."

My DD decided she wanted to see all the films depicted in the GMR. It made for a fun rainy weekend many years ago.

I too am sad to see the GMR go but the last trip we didn't enjoy it as much with the addition of the Robert Osborne narration and less CM interaction.

I'm looking forward to what I'm hoping will be a great attraction featuring my main mouse - I just wish it was a Mickey through the years kind of attraction. From Oswald, through the black and white years until now. But I'm 43 and I know that's not the kind of entertainment the young pups are looking for.

That sounds like so much fun! A great way to spend a rainy day! I would not go down that road with my crew. I am still traumatized that my tween aged at the time DGD thought I tortured her when we sat through the original Rogers and Hammerstein version of Cinderella with Leslie Van Warren. She liked it when she was 4! LOL

Leslie Ann Warren as Cindy is not the original version of R&H's Cinderella.

The ORIGINAL starred Julie Andrews as Cindy (R&H wrote the show with Julie in mind,) and was (at that time) the highest-rated TV show in history.

It is the only show that R&H wrote specifically for television... and not directly for Broadway.

No? I guess it will always be the original for me because I never got to see any other as a child. I just have the fondest memories of every New Year's Eve getting cozy on the sofa with my little sister so we could watch this version on TV. For me, no matter how may versions are made, including the lovely one that we saw a few years ago on Broadway, this one will be my favorite.

ETA: I am making it my business to find the one with Julie. Now I need to see it.

It was in 1957, the time when virtually all TV was "live" (and all Black & White.)
In these days long before video tape recording was invented, the only way they could "record" it was to focus a film camera onto a TV monitor and film the "live" image (and sound.)
That was called a "kinescope" (and the quality was/is very low, due to the limitations of the process.)

The entire kinescope of the show is posted (in 9 segments) on YouTube.

HERE is segment 2.
HERE is segment 3.
The rest can be found pretty easily once you go to the ones I posted.

HERE is, "In My Own Little Corner."

Thank you!

We rode it once and were both bored out of our minds, and said never again. I'm willing to bet a lot of people feel that way, too.

I agree that the closure probably has a lot to do with the fact that they're spending all this money and making all these changes to take the park in a new direction, and GMR just doesn't fit in with that.

They should have waited til Toy Story land was finished. We are going at the end of August and there won't be much to do at Hollywood Studios

I usually let my children use my husband and I fp's for toystory but went on it once. I do remember that it does whip you around a bit. Buzz lightyear is more mellow because you can control how much you want to spin, but with toystory it just spins you. Other than shows, there are not rides at HS now that I would consider mellow to ride. I used to ride Backlot Tour and really enjoyed it but it seems I was in the minority.

I haven't had a heart attack so I can't say if its safe or not, I don't really think the movement on toystory would be an issue for that. There are people with heart conditions riding major roller coasters.

I will miss the Great Movie Ride. I look forward to the new Mickey ride. I just wish they could have closed it 2 or 3 months later, as I already have planned trips and would like to have ridden it again. It does seem that it was a VERY short notice of the closing.

This is the rub for me, I understand things close, and that it's dated, but it's one of my favorite rides. Normally you hear about these things a while out and it's like "well that's not great so better make the next ride the best" but this time it's so fast! I was well inside my FP window and all set, the trip is booked and ready to go and it's going to be gone before I get there. With the long lead time on all the developments in the park, they couldn't have given us a few more months to sneak this one in?

This was not official until recently obviously, but rumors of GMR's imminent demise have been strong for a while now--so much so that when my family last went to DHS in April we made a point of riding it in case it was our last opportunity. I know that is not much help in your case, and I'm sorry you won't get another chance. :goodvibes

Oh, I know, and I can't really complain too much since I rode it in July of this year (had a one day hop at DHS while passing through) mostly just articulating the frustration. It's mostly frustrating for me because I'm a month or so out from my next full trip, with my girlfriend on our first trip together, and she'd never gotten to ride it, so it was going to be a big deal for us, and then.... nope! So I'm sad on her behalf!

Yes, especially when we made our 60 day fp's and planned on going to HS, mostly to ride GMR because we knew it was going to be closing. We would of spent an extra day in AK if I knew GMR was going to be closed. We don't have hopper tickets. Don't think it's right of Disney to close it after people have planned their park days after their 60 day mark. Of course now there are no fp's for Pandora at AK.
Have you checked your MDE account? Everyone who had booked FPs for GMR have been given an ANYTIME FP - this FP is good for use in any park and it includes the Pandora rides.

Check your FP area of MDE.

I unfortunately didn't make GMR fastpasses. We are staying at YC and planned on getting there early and riding it, 2 of my 3 children really wanted TOT, so I got fp's for them to ride that twice, while my son and I would go to GMR and then ride it again in the afternoon with all 3 of my children.

If they didn't want to renew a thing with Turner/MGM/etc., they could have just revamped it using strictly Disney-owned properties.

Imagine going through scenes of a Marvel film (one of the ones they're allowed to use), maybe a Star Wars film, muppets, and etc.
