Sunpass question

We are driving in from Ocala on I-75S and using the Florida turnpike with a destination of Pop Century. Should we buy a Sunpass or pay at the toll booths? We are driving in a rented vehicle. I would like to buy Sunpass before if we need to. Anyone have suggestions?

Most rented vehicles in Florida have the option of simplify adding it on or you can pay the tolls. For the amount of tolls you are going to go through I would skip it. I'm not a local though so that's just my opinion from experiences in the past.

We are renting our vehicle in Louisiana from Enterprise and they said they didn't know anything about it. Are the toll polls all electronic or can we pay at each booth?

We drove from Oklahoma (so basically the same route you will take most of the way). We stopped at a Florida Welcome Center when we hit the panhandle and bought a sunpass there.

I believe you will pay 2 tolls: one on the Turnpike & 1 on SR-429. Both are mainline tolls, which have 24-hour attendants who can accept cash and even make change. You can save a few minutes by having a few dollars of quarters and using the exact change baskets.

When you approach the toll points, be sure to follow the signs for cash tolls. You will be exiting to the right of the main roadway to get to the toll booths.

Can you purchase say a $10 pass? Also is it at a machine or through a person?

I believe it was a machine. I did have to get on the internet (used my phone) and create a SunPass account to add money to the account. It's been almost two years so I don't remember exactly, sorry.

The pass which sticks onto the windshield costs $5, plus $10 on your toll account. It must be stuck on the windshield, and cannot be used in another car after you remove it. I think you can get unused tolls refunded, but not the $5 purchase price.

There is also a $20 pass that attaches by suction cups and can be used on other cars on future trips. You still have to deposit $10 minimum into your toll account.

Thank you!! Was it a sticker you purchased? As described below?

Looks like you can get the sticker pass for $5 plus tax, and you must put a minimum of $10 on it to begin with.

Do you know if these can be bought at the Florida Welcome Center? The website says it takes 7 days to mail and I dont have the rental car info to complete this now online.

Yes, we purchased the sticker one, and got it at the Florida Welcome Center.

You can purchase the pass through the mail and just use your own car's info and the dates you will be traveling. When you get the rental you should change the car's license's plate number on the mobile app to reflect the rental car's.

FORGET SUN PASS & TURNPIKE

Stay on Hwy 27 ( A 3 lane Hwy ) & just turn onto Hwy 192 & into Disney

NO Tolls on this route

The sticker is cheaper, but you can't move it from car to car. The transponder ($20) sticks on your windshield, and you can register multiple cars on it. If you plan on multiple trips to Florida, it might be worth it to get the transponder.

We usually pay $4 in tolls (w/o Sunpass) to get to MCO from Jax (95 to 528), this time it was $3.26. So, slightly less. It can take up to 24 hours to register the funds/transponder, but it registered right away for us, and took about 3 hours for the funds to clear.

Why bother with the sun pass if you aren't driving in Florida a lot. The Florida turnpike from I75 to Disney is around 4 bucks or so and throw another buck for the Western Way. So it's around ten bucks. The couple cents you save with the sunpass you lose by having to spend 15 for the sticker and minimum amount and once you leave Florida. It's no good. There definitely are people to take your toll money around Orlando.

I go to Orlando at least 4 times a year. With my dd living there now, I find myself renting a car almost every time I go. Yes, the rental companies have plate recognition for the toll booths. But, they charge a daily fee for each day you use it. Alamo is something like $4 a day, in addition to the tolls. I bought my own Sunpass transponder...for $19, that I can reuse in any car I'm in. I just have to go to the Sunpass site, plug in my current car's registration, and off I go. You just have to be sure to delete that number when you turn in the car!!! Tolls are taken directly out of my checking acct. I can't be bothered with the stop and go of paying tolls.

It's $5 for the sticker.

The sticker actually costs nothing. It cost $4.99, but that $4.99 goes into your account and can be used for tolls. If you don't use your minimum deposit, they will refund the balance, but not the $4.99.

Be sure to remove the sticker from the car before you turn it in. You don't want some car rental porter running up tolls on your account! The stickers are supposed to be destroyed by the process of removing them, but that usually does NOT work. Last time my wife traded cars, the salesman removed the sticker and put it on the new car and it works fine.

The $19-20 for the removable transformer is non-refundable.

I just got the sticker for my trip a few weeks ago and the $5 I paid for the sticker was most definitely not applied to my account.
