Just Maui'd -- Maui/Aulani Trip Report

Congratulations on your wedding!! Following along... our honeymoon trip is in less than two months now so excited to see how your trip went!

Those prices look nice compared to some of the menu's I've seen! DO they have a DVC exclusive menu?

The happy hour prices were definitely very reasonable. Poolside, mixed drinks were about $13. Beers were much cheaper around $7.50. So it was nice to see the lower happy hour prices. They don't have a specific DVC menu, but if you ask about the special DVC drink, they'll make one for you!

Here and loving your report! The food reviews are great. We are planning an Aulani/Disneyland trip for June so I loved seeing your report pop up. Great tips on how to get places. THank you so much for sharing!!

Thank you so much for reading! Aulani and Disneyland was such a fun combo.

Congrats on your wedding! Loving your report, thank you for sharing! I really want to dine at Roy's next trip and try the dinner for two at Ama Ama from your photos! Looks super yummy =)

Thank you! Roy's and Ama Ama were among two of the BEST meals we had!

AULANI - Day 5

Tuesday was our last day before leaving Hawaii! Womp womp. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't fully cooperating with our plans, but we still had a great day. There was so much we wanted to see outside of the resort, but we only chose a few things because we really wanted to relax. The North Shore was one of the things I had really been wanting to do, and we saved it for our last day! I had heard a lot of great things from the DisUnplugged podcasts (& Dreams Unlimited Travel podcasts!) and they were all really helpful in planning our trip.

I started our last morning with coffee and the rest of my banana bread on the balcony (I had purchased it at the swap meet):
thumb_IMG_0709_1024_zpslxqqfkkf.jpg

Getting to the North Shore was very easy. We decided to leave early that morning after breakfast.

Sadly, there would be no more waking up to this view.

thumb_IMG_0710_1024_zpsnzsqyhw2.jpg

I had one major stop along the way. I could not come to Oahu without coming here.. it was one of my top priorities!! ;)

And that, friends, is LEONARD'S MALASADAS!!!!!!!

My priorities are in line, I tell you!

I had heard they were in a shopping center, so on our first night, I was convinced that shopping center was in Kapolei. It was actually a little farther down the highway, right in a plaza with a KMart and a Petco.

A family friend of ours lived in Hawaii while her husband was stationed there with the army, probably 10-12 years ago. When we told her we'd be on Oahu, she told us we had to go. Not that I needed much convincing!

thumb_IMG_0714_1024_zpsujgfxjke.jpg

We found it! It was as cute and quaint as I'd imagined.

thumb_IMG_0716_1024_zpsogmqhqtp.jpg

We each decided to get 2, and then I think we randomly decided on 2 extra for a total of 6. Justin did an original and a cinnamon sugar, I did a custard and a coconut, and we did two more.

We also saw LaVerne's, and I had to get a pic.. LaVerne is my middle name!

thumb_IMG_0717_1024_zpsue4v9aik.jpg

After a short wait, we hit the road for the North Shore!!

thumb_IMG_0720_1024_zps3qzmykbx.jpg

thumb_IMG_0721_1024_zpsfgmineyv.jpg

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

SERIOUSLY... Among the best things I have ever eaten!!!! I have such a sweet tooth so these were right up my alley. I loved the custard and the cinnamon sugar. Justin loved both of his. The haupia (coconut) was a little much for me, although coconut is my favorite! They also threw in a ling ling (sweet and sour). That was interesting!

On our way through the North Shore, we passed by just about everything we wanted to see that day. We decided to do the beach first.

I want to say this was Laniakea Beach. We wanted to see some sea turtles, but the weather was definitely not cooperating for swimming.

We parked in a small lot and walked across the street to get to the ocean. There were some hills and rocks.

thumb_DSCN0390_1024_zpsl7imbvht.jpg

thumb_IMG_0724_1024_zpsjosmlwes.jpg

You really can't see any turtles, but we saw a bunch in the waves! It was soooo choppy and rough that day but we did see them bobbing up and down. And, there were a lot of surfers out that day.

We turned around and went back towards Haleiwa. Of course we had to stop at Matsumoto for some shave ice.

thumb_DSCN0391_1024_zpsptjrxkex.jpg

thumb_IMG_0726_1024_zpsqhkv2icg.jpg

Again, reasonable prices here, too:

thumb_DSCN0396_1024_zpshbeoiet8.jpg

thumb_DSCN0397_1024_zpsygln1c9b.jpg

I had a combo of pineapple, coconut, and I think strawberry. I went with the condensed milk on top. Next time I'd probably go without the condensed milk, but it made for a different taste!

I think Justin went with cotton candy (his go to flavor):
thumb_DSCN0395_1024_zpsxcigefwb.jpg

thumb_DSCN0399_1024_zpsgc5hoyh6.jpg

There are plenty of shops, restaurants, etc. near Matsumoto, so we walked around to see what all was there. Souvenirs, t-shirts, food, stuff like that.

On our way back towards Aulani, I had another "must do" item.. our North Shore day was mainly focused around food, if you couldn't tell already. I had to have some Giovanni's Shrimp!!!!

thumb_IMG_0734_1024_zps9sm43tvu.jpg

I. LOVE. SHRIMP. Love, love, love.

I had the shrimp scampi, which had lots of garlic and came with some rice. It was pricy, but the portion was huge and I didn't come close to finishing. It was amazing!

(Lots of messy peeling required)

thumb_DSCN0401_1024_zpsmf42c7te.jpg

Justin, being the seafood-hater he is, found another food truck nearby and decided to go with a bacon wrapped hot dog. Unfortunately this hot dog was nothing special, he actually said it was pretty bad, and he wishes he would have ordered something different.

thumb_IMG_0738_1024_zps7crm48h3.jpg

We continued to head back to Aulani, and made one final stop.. at the Dole Plantation!

thumb_DSCN0404_1024_zpsronw9pep.jpg

The Dole Plantation was cute, if not just another tourist-y stop along the way. We didn't do the train ride or anything like that, but there's still a lot to see, including a massive Dole souvenir store!

I think we ended up with some soap.

thumb_DSCN0405_1024_zpsrbpozqrp.jpg

As if we had not eaten enough already, we had to get a Dole Whip!

Obviously I had to dress appropriately for the occasion.

thumb_DSCN0407_1024_zpsio8tmrtz.jpg

I did not eat anything else from there, but the food was not appealing if you ask me. I would save your money and eat elsewhere, like one of the many local restaurants on the north shore! If you have picky little ones, they would probably find something they liked there.

Overall, the Dole Plantation was worth a trip. No need for an entire day, maybe just an hour or two.

thumb_IMG_0743_1024_zpsdmf6gtwa.jpg

It was really overcast that afternoon, but we spent some time swimming and in the lazy river. One last hurrah at the pool! We packed all of our stuff that evening and decided to keep it easy for dinner.

We walked across the street to.. Pizza Corner!

thumb_IMG_0756_1024_zps1wyyu55j.jpg

The interior is really nice. We ordered a pizza with pepperoni and garlic knots.

thumb_IMG_0758_1024_zpswimra5ga.jpg

thumb_IMG_0757_1024_zpsxasr9foy.jpg

SO GOOD.

These slices were HUGE!!

thumb_IMG_0759_1024_zpsj6icc8dw.jpg

It probably sounds so silly to say we had pizza so many times on our honeymoon.. but where we used to live (we just moved to Charlotte from PA) we could never get good pizza, so we were always in a pizza kinda mood.

The pizza was fantastic. I like a thick, fluffy crust and this delivered. We met the owner and he was such a nice guy. He brought us some cinnamon rolls, which we kept for breakfast on the plane the next day. Everything we ate at Pizza Corner was delicious, the staff could not be more friendly, and the restaurant was very convenient.

Definitely consider giving Pizza Corner a try if you're thinking of a lazy dinner one night! We saw two couples at the table across from us and they were back for a second time during their trip.

I'll include a little bit about our Disneyland days, but that's a wrap for the Aulani portion! We seriously had such a relaxing and fantastic time, I am already dying to go back!!

Hey there married lady!!!!!! Looks like you all had an amazing honeymoon (and post some wedding pics if you get a chance, would love to see them). Aulani looks absolutely amazing. I've been to Oahu & Maui before and think I'm in the Justin camp that I prefer the island of Maui overall but Aulani is beyond perfection! Jason and I have 10 years coming up next year, so Hawaii is on the list of what we're considering. If we decide to take Casey then Aulani will likely win the day, but if is just us probably Maui or Napa or Disneyland or the multitude of other places we can't decide on. Can't wait to see how DL is

Ohmygosh......I had read about the garlic knots, but that pic drove them up to my must-do list!!

Couple more food questions--I have my priorities straight too! LOL Could you get a Dole FLOAT at the plantation? Like in pineapple juice? And tell me a little more about the coconut malasadas...did you find the filling too sweet, or too much of it, or what? I'm intrigued but a little uncertain. Guess I should make sure to get plenty others in case I don't like that one :)

Thanks for sharing your honeymoon with us here!

Oh man the north shore looks like foodie paradise! We will definitely go check that out! Don't skimp on the DL details. Especially the food :flower3:

You guys look like you had an amazing time! I am trying to convince myself that the studio villa will be enough room for us and your food reviews make me think we wouldn't cook much in the 1 bedroom villa anyway. Did you think it was enough room? I'd have to borrow all my 2017 points to do a 1br and thinking it's not worth it but it seems like every day I change my mind!

I'm with Kari - let's see a wedding picture! You guys are so cute :)

Ah! I think we are going to go to many of the same places in May!

I had a combo of pineapple, coconut, and I think strawberry. I went with the condensed milk on top. Next time I'd probably go without the condensed milk, but it made for a different taste!

I have never had the shaved ice with condensed milk - What type of taste does it give? We have it advertised here in LA too, but I have never been adventurous enough to try it.

We walked across the street to.. Pizza Corner!

My husband and I LOVE pizza so we will definitely add this to a dinner night. Especially since we can walk to it.

Cannot wait to try Leonard's Malasadas!! They look soooo yummy. Pretty sure we'll be stopping there on our way to Aulani from the airport.:rotfl:

Hey lady!! I will absolutely post some wedding pics, I finally got around to going through the disc of them, haha!! They turned out great. Oooh, all of those places sound amazing! DL was worth tacking on, even if we could only spend a few days there!

The garlic knots were a lovely bonus. I seriously loved the pizza there. Definitely worth going!

I think I just found the taste to be off. The custard one had a thick custard inside. I ate that first, and I thought it went better with the dough. I'm also partial to custard-filled donuts, so maybe the texture was off for me. But I LOVE coconut, so I think maybe the pudding was just odd for me. Definitely try it for yourself, it's worth it! The malasadas are sooooo delicious, a variety is definitely worth it!

I'll definitely include some wedding pics and DL details! If we had been there longer, say for a week, we probably would have cooked. At that point in our vacation, we had been away for a week, close to a week and a half, so we wouldn't have minded a home-cooked meal to save on some expenses and just to get away from restaurant food. I think the studio was plenty of room. How many people do you have traveling with you? We said if it were us and a few children in a few years, it would be do-able. Four adults would be tough. I have stayed at the AKL studios in Kidani and I would equate it to the same feel. We didn't cook in the room, but we did chips/sandwiches for lunch and then almost all breakfasts in the room and the kitchenette served us just fine! We kind of got into the routine of breakfast in the room, lunch in the room, and dinner somewhere nice. We felt like saving money on our first two meals allowed us to go out at night and not worry about what we were spending, or getting overstuffed from eating out all day.

Ah! I think we are going to go to many of the same places in May!

My husband and I LOVE pizza so we will definitely add this to a dinner night. Especially since we can walk to it.

The pizza was so good, it definitely hit the spot for a night where we had to travel early the next day and had been out and about all day. Worth it for sure, they deliver, too!

The shaved ice was just like any normal snow cone, but the condensed milk adds like a syrupy sweet consistency to it. It was worth trying, but I was jealous of Justin once mine had all mixed together. It wasn't too appetizing to me after a while.

Cannot wait to try Leonard's Malasadas!! They look soooo yummy. Pretty sure we'll be stopping there on our way to Aulani from the airport.:rotfl:

SO GOOD. I tried to get my husband to detour on the way from the airport but it was like 10 pm so it was a no go.... if we had gone earlier in our trip I know we would've gone back, hahaha!!!

TRAVEL DAY - HNL to LAX

This day started our pretty uneventful, but it included one of the BEST MEALS we ever had!

Our flight was pushed back a little that morning due to some issues with the plane, but we took off probably half an hour later than expected and landed at LAX almost right on time.

We had failed to book any Disneyland resort transportation before our honeymoon, it was just one more thing I meant to do and forgot to do before the wedding! Thankfully we were able to book something while we were in Hawaii. Because we had to be to the hotel in time for our dinner, we couldn't wait around for the Disneyland Resort Express (it only leaves at certain times). We also didn't want to risk sharing a shuttle with someone (Super Shuttle) and missing our reservation. So we ended up planning to book a "direct" shuttle with Super Shuttle, and instead, hiring a private car was around the same price. So we booked a car both ways from the airport and it wasn't too bad price-wise. We didn't want to rent a car because we've never driven in LA and we also wouldn't be driving it while we were in Disneyland!

Our driver was amazing and so friendly. Our drive from LAX to DLR took forever, at least like an hour and a half. I think we got to the resort around 5:30/6 so we had enough time to get ready and go explore Downtown Disney.

We stayed at the Anaheim Fairfield Inn, which was fine, though nothing special. A lot of people told us that staying offsite at DLR was nothing like staying offsite at WDW. I agree with that, however this hotel was no Aulani! Because we pretty much were gone all day in the parks for the two days we were there, we didn't mind it. But, if I wanted a resort experience, I'd stay at one of the Disneyland resorts next time. I felt like I was out of the "Disney Bubble" even though it was still very, very close.

One of the nice things about Disneyland is that the parks and Downtown Disney are all next to each other! So we walked around Downtown Disney for a few minutes until our reservation.

That night, we would be dining at the Napa Rose Chefs Counter! I had called to book his reservation at six months out. We were really looking forward to it. There were 2 seatings and we chose the 8:30 one so that we could make sure we had enough time. This was our big "special meal" of the trip. We tried to do one signature-esque dining experience everywhere we went - Humuhumu in Maui, Ama Ama in Oahu, and Napa Rose in Disneyland.

We arrived and were told we could have a seat in the lounge area, since we were probably 15 minutes early. Eventually they lead us back to the Chefs Counter.

The seats were grouped in 4's, I think there may have been 12 people total. For the first little bit, no one was next to us. Eventually we were joined by 2 lovely women from England. They were so sweet!

This was our view into the kitchen. To the left, these guys were doing a lot of the meat. To the right, you can't really see it but we got to watch them make the desserts. It was so cool!

thumb_IMG_0761_1024_zpsavpngogv.jpg

They presented us with some bread and butter. The bread consisted of a flatbread that was crispy, a green olive bread (my favorite!) and one more that must have been forgettable because I don't even know what it was.

thumb_IMG_0763_1024_zpsho2bo0ok.jpg

The chef came over and asked us about our preferences. Justin said that he doesn't like seafood, and he may have listed a few other things. I just said "no raw fish". I'm not picky, but at the same time I have never tried a lot of things like mussels, oysters, certain types of fish, boar, duck, etc. So I figured if they prepared anything like that, I'd try it! The chef also let us know that if we disliked anything she brought us, we could get a new dish instead.

The chefs counter consisted of 5 courses, including dessert. The chef chooses all of your courses. I believe it is $100/person and you can also add a wine pairing, which I chose to do. Justin ordered a Diet Coke, per usual. The Sommelier we met was OUTSTANDING. He was so knowledgeable and just a great server too. I told him that I usually drink white wine. He told me that a lot of the dishes I'd be receiving would pair better with red, so I just told him I trusted his judgment! And I'm so glad I went with the reds.

Amouse Bouche
thumb_IMG_0764_1024_zpsiin4ohuh.jpg

This was our amuse bouche. So, a predecessor to all of the rest of the food we'd be eating! This was a Spicy Beef Spring Roll with Cashews. And that's exactly as I'd describe it. It was delicious! Nice and light. We love cashews so we highly enjoyed this.

Justin's Diet Coke "on the rocks" as our server put it!
thumb_IMG_0771_1024_zps2xrmazkt.jpg

FIRST COURSE

While we waited in the lounge, we had some time to peek at the menu. I wasn't sure if the items we would receive were off-menu or not. I was happy to see that one of the items I had seen on the menu was my first course.

Ashley's First Course
thumb_IMG_0766_1024_zpslnszpi0d.jpg

My first course was a Grilled Scallop with Wine Country Corn, Lemon Marmalade, and Bacon Bubbles. I really have no words to describe this, other than amazing. The scallop was cooked so perfectly. At Roy's, the scallop I had was way too raw for my taste. This was done much better and all of the flavors went very well together.

The wine that accompanied this course was a
Baileyana Chardonnay. I occasionally like chardonnay, but I don't like it when it's too oak-y. This chardonnay was aged in steel barrels. I really enjoyed this pairing, our dinner was off to a GREAT start!

Justin's First Course

thumb_IMG_0767_1024_zpsueabys6j.jpg

Justin's first course was a Wild Boar Meatloaf with Kumquat-Huckleberry Mostarda. At first we both thought.. berries? Hmmm.. But Justin loves game-y things so the wild boar was something he knew he'd enjoy. And it was delicious! He really liked it. This is the same guy that ate chili cheese fries almost every day at Aulani.. so I was a little nervous knowing he's picky, but he really loved his meal!

SECOND COURSE

Ashley's Second Course

thumb_IMG_0768_1024_zpsvaejjjla.jpg

Forgive me, I tried to rotate my photos but it wouldn't save. My second course was a Heirloom Tomato Salad with Blue Cheese, Avocado, and Bacon. While maybe not as extravagant as some of the other things we had, it was really delicious and I would totally make something like this at home! The portions here were just enough that we really got to taste everything, but small enough that we weren't stuffed, even at the end of the night. It probably helps that we had hardly eaten that day.

I missed a photo of my wine pairing for this course, but it was a delicious Rutherford Sauvignon Blanc. Our sommelier described each wine to us which I thought was so nice.

Justin's Second Course

thumb_IMG_0769_1024_zpsvr9rggsj.jpg

Justin's second course was something that I never in a million years thought he'd eat. A Tempura Fried Squash Blossom filled with cheese. UHH, YUM! This was so unique and I had a little bit of envy!

THIRD COURSE

Ashley's Third Course

thumb_IMG_0772_1024_zpsftvr64fz.jpg

My third course was something I've never eaten before. It's not something I'd ever order (until now) or make myself. I really wish I'd done a better job of writing down descriptions or at least photographing the menu. This was duck breast with corn and I think there were a few artichokes on there. I missed the description. But in actuality, this was one of the BEST things I've eaten! The duck was soooo juicy, a nice amount of fat. Basically I'd died and gone to duck heaven, how did I wait 26 years to try it?!

thumb_IMG_0775_1024_zpsdabtobxm.jpg

Paired with the duck was a nice Pinot Noir. I'm not much of a dry red drinker, but I can drink it in small doses. These pourings were small enough that I wasn't choking it down, but large enough that I felt as if I got my money's worth.

Justin's Third Course

thumb_IMG_0777_1024_zpsnrtwjeyi.jpg

Justin's third course was a ribeye with tomatoes and okra. I can't recall what the sauce was, unfortunately. His steak was cooked perfectly and he really enjoyed this course. Our chef joked that she'd bring him a ton of meat, and she wasn't lying!

FOURTH COURSE

Ashley's Fourth Course

thumb_IMG_0776_1024_zpslma6jryi.jpg

I don't even know where to begin! This was Short Ribs with Pomegranate and some type of mustard, with a zucchini couscous "cake". We watched them making the zucchini couscous cakes and it was pretty cool to watch. It was basically zucchini wrapped up with couscous inside. This entire dish was simply amazing. I loved the addition of the little pomegranate seeds on top, and the zucchini and couscous was perfectly seasoned and went really well together. Overall, I was so pleased with this course. Short ribs are another thing I've never had but really liked!

This was paired with a
Federalist Zinfandel.
thumb_IMG_0775_1024_zpsdabtobxm.jpg

Justin's Fourth Course

thumb_IMG_0773_1024_zpszo0nosu0.jpg

Justin's fourth course was a Filet Mignon. I know there were some potatoes and vegetables underneath. I hate to undermine it and say it was just steak and potatoes, but again my notes weren't too detailed! We were pretty focused on just enjoying ourselves and snapping an occasional photo!

Lastly, our fifth and final course... DESSERT!!!

thumb_IMG_0778_1024_zps4kl8veks.jpg

thumb_IMG_0779_1024_zpsgqagf2l5.jpg

I think these pics are sideways too.. Oops! Mine is on top, I had a chocolate peanut buttery dessert which was outstanding! I believe it was gelatinous in texture. Justin had a smores brownie.. I was so jealous, but both of our desserts again were just outstanding!

With my dessert, the sommelier brought out a tawny port for me to enjoy. Sorry, no picture again! This was STRONG, let me tell you. And a much larger glass than I'd received previously, but still delicious nonetheless.

By this point, I was tipsy and the English ladies next to us started chatting us up. They were adorable! They had some similar dishes to us, but also some that were different. Towards the end, one of the ladies offered me her wine (I know, don't accept wine from strangers, what was I thinking) because she didn't like one of her pours. So that was nice of her! ;)

Overall, this is not an inexpensive meal, but it's also not outrageous. I really thought that for $100/person, we got to taste a lot of different types of food. We can't complain one bit! It was all outstanding and I would recommend the experience to anyone.

After that, we walked back to our hotel and hit the hay. We had a long first day at Disneyland coming up!

Congratulations on your wedding! Looks like you had a fabulous honeymoon.

One thing I was wondering, is it really $39 to rent snorkels? IIRC they sell them at Costco for less than that, or about that price. We've bought them at Costco here at home as well as in Kapolei in the past.
