Bed bugs: Am I being crazy or should I actually be worried?

So I made the mistake of clicking on a picture at the bottom of the boards page that led to an article on bed bugs and the nightmare that can result if you come in contact with them and potentially bring them home... and now I'm freaking out. The thread provided a site to check: http://bedbugregistry.com/. We are staying at Pop at the end of Oct-beginning of Nov and now I'm wondering if we should switch hotels. The most recent post regarding bb's at Pop was in Jan of this year, so obviously its been a while. But I checked all the All-Stars and its been at least a year since anyone has posted about them being there. I'm a little upset bc we just changed our reservation dates and ended up having to switch to Pop from CBR which had no mention of them in the several posts I read. Am I just being paranoid or should I really worry about this??

Just about any hotel that's been in operation for any significant period of time has had bedbugs. Disney's hotels deal with them very effectively once they're reported.

Your best bet is to inspect any hotel room you stay in, anywhere, before bringing your luggage in. Google can tell you what to look for.

It never hurts to check your mattresses, no matter where you stay. They are just as likely to be at any other resort on or off property, in a different state, public transportation, etc. I always check just for peace of mind. Don't bring anything in the room until you check your beds. If you do find something, then you don't have to worry about your luggage having been exposed. Just report it to management and they'll take care of getting you a better room and will take care of the problem in the original room.

I don't think you're being paranoid. Just be proactive anywhere you stay.

Ive been to wdw like 6 times since 2005, never encountered bed bugs. I travelled about 10x a year for work until 2013, never encountered bed bugs. One time in my hotel stays, it was in Gurnee Illinois by Six Flags. Caught them crawling on the headboard during my pre room inspection. Just look well at the mattress, headboards, etc...dont put your suitcase on the floor. Unpack it outside when you get home and then seal it for a week in plastic. I manage a non for profit that accepts hundreds of clothing and furniture donations a day, only saw bedbugs once, and we have systems in place to look for them. You will be ok.

Paranoid.

Just check your room before you bring your suitcases in. You are just as likely to find bedbugs at the Grand Floridian or the Poly as Pop or All Stars. They can be ANYWHERE, and not just at hotels.

I think you are being paranoid the only way to be 100% you won't get bedbugs is staying home since any hotel has a potential to have them. If you fly your bag could get in from someone's bag. Inspect the room when you get there life is too short to be worried about all the what ifs. After all bedbugs is not the worst thing it could happend and it is fixable.

Plus the registry is user updated so just because is there doesn't mean the information is accurate or that certain resorts hasn't have them recently.

I'm planning on checking for them when we arrive...I've just read horror stories about ppl who have unknowingly brought the things back home with them and then ended up with expensive extermination visits that must repeated and in some cases have even had to throw out mattresses and other furniture, so I'm just a little wigged out about the whole thing. We have 3 kids so the thought of potentially having to toss for 4 sets of mattresses is overwhelming. None of these ppl who have found themselves in this position thought it was going to happen to them, just like most ppl never expect whatever calamity they find themsleves involved in to happen to them. I'm honestly surprised that we have never encountered them...we travel a lot and stay in many different hotel rooms every year. I'm going to try not to let it bother me too much but any kind of bug really disgusts me and the very thought of these things feeding on my children is enough to turn my stomach and make me panic. I'm doing research and will have a plan for what and how to check for them. We will be arriving after midnight most likely with exhausted children so I need to streamline the process and make it as quick as possible.

Honestly, answering your question, yes, you are being crazy.
The fact that you travel a lot and haven't encountered them shows you right there that worrying about them is unwarranted.
They are just not that common.
Moral of the story, don't click those posts at the bottom of the page. Can't tell you how many dinosaur threads have been resurrected by them
They are always old. I wish there was a way to make them go away.

You didn't read about them but it doesn't mean they weren't there. It's incredibly naive to think only the Value resorts have them. Naive and wrong. Chance is rare but they are not limited to only the less cost resorts. The best room at the GF can have them

Of course the only way to completely avoid encountering bedbugs at all is to never stay in hotels. Any hotels.

Other than that, the way to handle it is to do a check for them when you arrive.

The cost of the hotel is no indication regarding their propensity for bedbug reports.

Also, remember that the bed bug site you mentioned isn't in any way 'official.' It's just a place for people to post their experiences with bed bugs, or what they think are bed bugs. It doesn't list every single incident, or even most incidents, so the fact that you didn't see any reports for CBR doesn't really tell you anything. Also, reports are not verified, and plenty of people mistake sun rash for bedbug bites, or bites they got from other random insects around Disney (mosquitoes, etc).

Honestly, I'm sure that every single Disney resort has had a bedbug incident at one time or another. So there's no reason to choose a hotel based on that. What's reassuring is that Disney has a long standing, proven track record of responding quickly and thoroughly to reports of bedbugs, so they're eradicated from any room that they're found in.

We encountered bed bugs at POR last year. Disney was amazing, treating our stuff and upgrading our hotel. We had gotten in really late and didn't check the beds, we will never stay without checking the beds now. As others have said, it can happen at any hotel. Changing your hotel will not guarantee you won't encounter them since other guests bring them in.

An even better way is to never stay in hotels, fly in an airplane with luggage, shop in a large department store and try on clothing. In fact, you might be the culprit bringing them into the hotel if you fly to your destination. Your luggage could become infested while out of your control in the hold of the plane. You just don't know until it might be too late.

If you do find bedbugs at WDW, notify hotel management immediately. They will send someone up to check out the room. If they find any, they will take care of you and your belongings, plus take care of the room.

Bedbugs are resistant to many chemicals, but they are not resistant to temperature extremes. Heat and extreme cold can kill the.

Bed bugs are possible anywhere but they are also not that common. Check your hotel when you enter and inform the hotel if there are any issues, including bedbugs right away. That being said, I think the poster of the thread that pops up below the forums here was possibly overreacting. Bedbugs are a huge pain but they are not quite the calamity described.

You mean folks on message boards (and the Internet as a whole) exaggerate? Say it ain't so ;)

Actually they are very common nowadays and very difficult to get rid of. The pesticides they once used are now outlawed, making it quite difficult for extermination companies to get rid of.

I vote for crazy. Bedbugs are a reality and changing hotels does not change your chances of encountering them.

Pesticides have never been the best approach for getting rid of bugs. Extreme heat and cold are more effective and less damaging to your stuff.

As for common, I have stayed in hundreds of hotels and hostels ranging from really crappy hostels to five stars. I have had to deal with bedbugs once. (and it wasn't in the crappy hostels btw). Your best guard against them is to keep your stuff up off the floor and when you return home but all your clothes in a very hot wash and dry cycle upon return.

I'm not trying to minimize the problem of bed bugs but I read the post the OP was referring to also and the poster in that read was almost having a breakdown over it. IMO, it's not a bad enough problem to warrant that and there are some pretty simple steps to take to avoid bringing the problem home.
