The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: A not so common thought that no one really wants to think about as a runner, but when or what type of event would it take for you to decide its time to hang up the ole running shoes?

A doctor would have to tell me that I was doing irreparable long-term damage to my health or my ability to move freely later in life. It's pretty difficult to imagine anything happening of that magnitude in which not being able to run was my biggest concern.

ATTQOTD: Yea, I agree, it would have to come from an injury or something physical limiting my ability to run. I really hope someday I can be one of those old timers still entering races and still enjoying running.

Like everyone else, I think a serious injury would get me to stop running, something where my knees simply couldn't take it anymore, for example. I have a friend who loves doing Ironman races but his knee problems kept him from being able to finish the marathon in his last two attempts. He hung up his running shoes and now does long distance (5-15k) swims instead. It was a hard choice for him to make, but one he had to make. He could no longer do what he loved.

I'm not stopping, but scaling back dramatically in 2017 at the encouragement of my doctor. Like I've mentioned before, hopefully scaling back will help me prolong my running "career" before surgery ultimately puts an end to it.

I don't know that I have any other insight beyond what others have said. I think it it would have to be something really drastic as I think I'd try to scale back the intensity before something could make me quit it altogether.

I'm still fairly new to running and trying to push through the bubble to get to longer races. I started running to get in shape again and strengthen my heart (congenital heart defects corrected when a kid). Pretty much, at this point, injury or a 'do not do that' from my cardiologist are the only things that would get me to quit.

I run for my health, mental and physical. I also run for the enjoyment. If the health benefits were lost, I would still run because I enjoy it so much. So, it would have to become a detriment to my health for me to stop. I intend to reduce mileage soon. 50 miles/week will become a problem soon. But I hope not to have to stop altogether.

Something else may force me to stop, like an injury, but then it wouldn't really be my choice, would it?

Anyone here a big Disney planner? I am putting the finishing touches on my plans prior to scheduling FP for our November trip, and was wondering if someone here would be interested in looking it over and making suggestions if I am overshooting with how much I can get done. On this trip it would be me, DW (who could be with child at that time), and DD3. Send me a PM if you are interested and I could e-mail you my excel doc. with the plans on it when I am done. TIA
I am sure you already found help but if you need anything or have questions let me know.

I guess when they really start to get warn down. I don't have a specific point to get rid of shoes but based on feel and look really.

Edit: guess I took the question a little more literal than I was supposed too.

I have no idea what or when would make me hang up the shoes and stop running. I'm quite young and still newish to running so I haven't even thought of that yet.

Hi everyone! I am just back from Mont Tremblant and decided to pop my head in and see what's been going on while I've been away. There are quite a few pages for me to go through and try to catch up on (seriosly, you can't take more than a day or two off from this thread), but I did see a lot of alerts and was humbvled to see that so many of you were following what I was going through on Sunday and can't thank y'all enough for the cheers and support the last few days after Ironman! I will try to put together an exhaustive recap of the day sometime this weekend and get it posted, but until then THANK YOU to all of you for caring and supporting me! I though about plenty of things during those dark hours of the marathon and you guys and gals here were certainly on my mind :) You helped get me through, so from the bottom of my hear, thank you.

I can't accept the GOAT title, far more desrving people out there, yourself included Jerry. I've had a few decent athletic accomplishments this year but you have inspired us all daily with your QOTD's, and you've shown your heart and passion for your fellow man the last couple weeks with everything you have gone through and the efforts you have put in to make sure those in need are taken care of. I'll gladly pass my GOAT title on to you my friend!

Doing what I have the last week is what everyone around here is doing. Anything they can to help the community. Thousands of folks doing the same thing all around here.

Unrelated to the above: So this week has kind of got away from me as far as running has gone. Sunday I will get things go again. Before then I need to spend some time with the family and take care of some much neglected chores at home. Just way behind on a lot. My daily commute that used to be ~ 1 hour total a days is now much closer to 3 hours with so many people being displaced and out of town help. Not that will change in the near future, but its taking some time to adjust on my end to what is becoming a new normal. Anywho, I know that it sounds like a lot of excuses, and to a degree it is. I just wanted to say starting Sunday I get back on track and wanted to accountability.
I don't think I need to reduce my mileage getting started again, one reason is because a lot of those days may not have been running, but it was long hours of hard work, and secondly I don't think it was enough time that I lost much as far as fitness goes. The two runs for a total of 5 miles ive done so far this week felt very easy so I am confident Sundays 13 - 15 should go about as well as they can in this heat.

Pretty much this. I do love running, and it would crush me to quit, but I am not going to do irreparable damage to my body because of it.

My doctor is encouraging me not to do another half. Right now, I'm listening. I'm putting a pin in that one until 2018.

ATTQOTD: Like a lot of people health reasons would be the only reason to stop. I love running! 6 years ago my health plummeted to where I couldn't walk much less run. This year I've finally reached a place where I can start running again and it feels like a gift. (I try to remind myself of that when I'm struggling with not being where I used to be or having to run on the treadmill because it's too hot :scared::oops:::yes:: ) As far as when, there is a very fit looking lady who runs around my apartment that appears to be in her late 70s and I often see her out running even in 90° weather! She is what I hope to be one day :tiptoe::worship:
