What's so relaxing about Aulani?

Other than the resort being beautifully appointed, this trip has been nothing but aggravating. This resort lacks everything from lounge chairs, activities, and even half and half for your 5 dollar cup of coffee. This vacation has been nothing but a series of apologies for their lack of conveniences for their guests. The starlit Hui was even cancelled. The best time my family had was the time we spent outside of the resort.

Sorry you are not feeling relaxed and not having a good time but everyone's experience is different.

My answer is " You are in Hawaii" which for me is relaxing. We did have some issues with the chairs but at this time of the year it is to be expected. I didn't feel the same as you with regard to activites. As you are in Hawaii enjoy the activites outside the resort.

On my trip the Starlit Hui was cancelled but that was due to wildfires and the air quality. I was disappointed but what can you do things happen. I was just at a resort last week and the water slides were down the whole time we were there and that was one of the reasons I chose it. Things happen.

Hope the rest of your trip gets better.

I'm having a great time in Hawaii, just expected a little more from Aulani. I stayed in Waikiki for a few days before coming here. We stayed at the Ilikai had an ocean view one bedroom, and had a great time. Service and amenities that were expected was included. We hit diamond head, kualoa ranch, Haunauma Bay, PCC. Haliewa, and the list goes on. So we definitely enjoyed Oahu as a whole. The service at Aulani just left a lot to be desired and it's by no means the staffs fault-the resort is poorly managed and the guest experience which should be a top priority seems to fall to the wayside and hearing that they're at capacity or that it is summer is a poor excuse for bad service.

I am sorry to hear you are not having a great time. We found it to be much more relaxing than we ever imagined and are dreaming of our next trip already. We were there 7 days in July and only left the resort one day, for part of the day, and never ran out of things to do. We had so much fun. The Menehune bridge was closed the majority of our trip, which bummed out my youngest son, but we still had a wonderful time. I hope the rest of your trip improves.

What you may be experiencing is a product of going during a busier time when the resort is at or near capacity. When we were there in January, it was definitely not as crowded as it is considered a slower time. I asked various CM's about crowd levels and they said whenever kids are out of school it is busy there.

I went when it first opened and it was awesome, had a good breakfast buffet and characters resort was nice kids loved the waterslides and they brought food to your lounge chair. I had a great time. The only thing lacking was cheap variety of food. And no restaurants near by. But I had a great time.

Never understood the allure to this place....I live in Oahu and would always stay downtown vs. Aulani...Super deluxe rooms and some of the best dining in downtown Waikiki. Seems like they always have a hard time selling DVC slots there as well. I write this as a Disney freak the price and location for me doesn't cut it.

Sorry you didn't like it. I can understand your feelings. I thoroughly enjoyed my vacation but there were things about Aulani that infuriated me. The daily fight for chairs kept me from even trying to use the pools. When I wanted to use the lazy river I figured out a work-around. I also thought they could have done a better job with signage in the pool area, but I thought my room was lovely, the QS food I had was delish. Early June was crowded, too. If I ever go back I'll try off season.

We stay at the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club, and I've walked around Aulani thinking it felt way too over crowded compared to the Marriott.

We can typically go down any time of the day and at least find a chair or two by one of the pools with no problem. The pool loungers at Aulani do feel like they're crammed in there.

We don't eat at the resorts at Ko Olina (but do in Waikiki often, when we lived there we'd go to Waikiki resorts for drinks & dinner a lot). We stock up at Target & Costco and eat lunch out if we're driving around but cook in pretty much every night. We don't even like the dining options at the Marriott, but it seems most folks cook in after a day out & about or at the pool and beach. We take a soft side cooler down to the pool with beer, wine, and snacks.

The literal answer to your question, from my perspective, would be walking through the lobby and breathing the air. :) Or sitting on the beach in the evening close enough to Ama'Ama to hear the live music.

OK, so I clearly loved my Aulani trip. No lazy river anywhere is going to have the magic of the hidden animals, and we thought it was great fun to happen upon characters just wandering the resort. However, after our weekend staycation (not that it matters - but the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Arizona) - it was hard not to make some comparisons. One thing I realized was that the Aulani chair issue will never, ever be resolved - b/c there just isn't physical space for enough chairs for the capacity of the resort. The Desert Ridge resort had the usual 30-min signage but absolutely no reason to monitor the chairs. It probably wasn't at capacity, but I don't even think that matters. At any point on Saturday afternoon (this is Labor Day weekend) - we could have had a number of choices of 4-lounger groupings. Can you imagine heading to the Aulani pools at 1pm and asking your family of 4 - should we put our stuff there, or there, or there? (We chose a shady spot along the man-made freshwater lagoon sort of thing that surrounded the resort.) There were rows and rows of completely unused loungers on a hill overlooking the lazy river. Aulani just doesn't have that physical space around the pools. I do now wonder why no one thought of that when it was in the planning stages. I can only guess that they thought more people would be on the beach loungers than actually are, since so many of those are empty throughout the day?

Otherwise, there were some things that definitely affected our perception of Aulani vs. "other". The Desert Ridge resort had far more employees wandering the pool area. Far, far more. If they wanted to monitor chair usage, they could have done so much more easily. They walked around passing out little cups with strawberries topped with chocolate and whipped cream. They brought around pitchers of water and cups, leaving them without asking if you weren't in your loungers. They stopped to check that you had everything you needed. BUT there were no lifeguards. Ugh. I think we all forget that Disney posts lifeguards in situations other resorts/cruiselines just do not. I felt like I had to keep my 7yo right by my side in the lazy river, even though he's a great swimmer, b/c no lifeguards means more nonsense from other guests. With kids, I would rather have the lack of chairs stress than the no-lifeguard stress, but that's something only parents of younger kids are ever going to say. One thing that stays the same is ridiculous resort food pricing... so from now on, when people complain about Aulani food prices, all I can say is - stay at another similar type of resort outside of Hawaii and you'll still find it to be stupidly high. Except you can't say "food is always expensive here" in Arizona. ;)

We'll go back to Aulani one day, b/c you really can't replicate the atmosphere, and it left me with a relaxed, happy feeling every time I walked in the lobby doorway. But if you're not feeling that, then there are plenty of other options! We don't all have to love the same resorts, and that is totally ok.

Sorry to hear your trip isn't going so well. I was there two years ago this time of year, and we learned by Day 2 that if we wanted chairs, someone needed to go down and lay claim to a couple. Since we knew there wouldn't be a time that all of us needed to be lying in chairs, we only claimed TWO (and we were in them a LOT). Also, we took two close to some tables with chairs (let others snap them up!) and when we wanted to sit at a table for a few minutes--whether to drink a drink in the shade, or enjoy a Hawaiian Shave Ice, we just asked the folks at the table if we could join them for a few minutes! Chat them up, act neighborly... we never had a problem. Happy people seem okay with sharing, so long as you're not trying to "steal what's theirs." :) I hated seeing row after row of unused chairs that continued to go unused for a couple of hours. If people would really just take them over when they intend to use them, life would be better. I never had trouble getting half and half, and our service was outstanding, despite being there during "almost high season." We were there for 11 days, so Starlit Hui was scheduled for, I think, 3 times while we were there. As happy as I am to be in the Disney resort and understanding of families with noisy children as anybody, I was still a bit put off that there wasn't an "adult night" at the Starlit Hui. To just have one night without 1000 kids running around and being the center of attention would have been nice... maybe hold a late one? I don't know what the answer is, but all in all, we were really, truly happy. It just feels good, smells good... every minute. I hope some pixie dust lands on you and makes your trip a little better. :) Maybe we drank the Kool-Aid, but we adored every moment of every day there, and I have a 17-year-old son... no little ones. We all nearly cried when we left. Can't wait to go back. We were well-treated.

Enjoy your days!!!!!

I'm sorry your not having the best time I am worried because I too will be traveling at peak time next summer.

What do you mean find a work around for lazy river? Is it easier to get a viewing with the pope than find a tube?:scared:
thanks

We didn't have trouble finding tubes for my family of 4 (Memorial Day weekend through early June), to use all at the same time. it's definitely more crowded on the lazy river during certain times of day, but I know we used it in the morning, afternoon, and evening... and I think we waited maybe a few minutes at most for 2 of them the time we all went in the afternoon? Usually you can even see stacks of them around. We watched Stitch playing with a stack as we floated by one day! It's pretty empty once it starts to get dark, but quite neat then if you're ok with the water being cooler.

I am thinking the poster was referring to finding a workaround for where to put their stuff, when no chairs were nearby, so that he/she could use the lazy river.

I think many people don't realize that like DL or WDW you have to do some planning. Although you are on vacation, you may have to make the extra effort to plan ahead. Unfortunately this may mean getting up a little earlier to reserve a chair, making reservations for certain abh activities and more. Their are plenty of included activities for the family compared to other Resorts, however i'm not sure what type of activities you are expecting. Staying at Aulani can be expensive so I could see disappointment if expectations are not met usually based on what people view as a value.

If they cancel the Starlit Hui they usually have a reason, so that's not really on them. I don't know anything about half and half though.

No restaurants nearby? There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Maybe there weren't when it first opened.
