Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! Summer 2017 (replaces ToT)

Plus, it's not just a movie anymore. It's a franchise.

I won't be able to see eye-to-eye with the majority that are upset about Tower of Terror. I never thought it was anything special, so I won't mind seeing them redecorate it. The ride will be the same (actually better if they randomize it). The only thing changing are the decorations.

*puts on flame retardant suit*

Same here. I love the ride, but I always thought the WDW version was far superior than the DL one. I remember being pretty let down once the ride was over because I love the part in the WDW one with the forward track.

If I want to ride ToT, I'll just save up and travel to WDW. Chances are Disney won't be able to make Marvel rides on that side of the country for a while. There is no way Universal would spend all that money updating The Hulk coaster right now just to reskin it a couple years later.

Personally, I love change and even though GotG isn't my cup of tea, I adapt and will ride the new ride when it comes about. However, my 13 year old DD is absolutely heartbroken over this change.

When we visited for her 1st time, she was 2. She looked up at the ToT in awe and begged to ride it. Naturally, she couldn't and we had to wait until she was 40". Every trip before she was tall enough, she would say, "I know there is a roller coaster in that building and I want to ride it!" As soon as she was tall enough (at 4) we took her on the ride. It was her first 'big-kid ride" and it was love at first sight. It is 'her' ride. She has the hats, the shirts, the robe, the pins, etc....and it is the only ride in the entire DLR that she feels that passionately about. If we visit, it is the first and last ride she wants to do. She feels such a personal connection to this ride, and when the rumors came out, I braced her for the possibility of the change.

We were at the Resort this past week, and the news broke on the Blog on our drive home. She was inconsolable. Big, heaving sobs came from the backseat. While she knows it is just a ride, she feels like part of her childhood is going away along with it. She kept saying that she wanted to take her kids on it....she wanted to ride it as an old woman, etc....and all those future dreams were going away with this change. She is in the minority who feels that the DLR ToT is superior to the WDW version, because of the strong emotional connection she has to the ride.

We each have something(s) that are very personal and emotional for us at DL. For my DD, this was it. Lord help me if they take Fantasmic away forever.:faint:

I think they decided to change it for the sake of the bigger picture, not because there was anything wrong with the ride. I've never heard anyone complain about the theming, and personally I think it's one of the most well-executed themes in DL (granted, a lot of that comes down to the enthusiasm of the CM's).

However, if I were a Disney exec looking to make the best possible use of DLR's limited land, I would have to take a good hard look a the whole Hollywood-themed area. It seems to me the area is highly under-utilized. There's a theater (though theaters can easily be re-themed) and one other less popular ride. The theme is cute, but there's hardly anyone back there to see it since there's not much to draw them there. I know it hasn't really been determined if Bugs Land or the Hollywood area will being used for Marvel, so I'm making an assumption here, but let's say they decided it's time to gut the Hollywood area. Well then TOT would have to be re-themed to fit either Bugs Land or the new area.

Whether the ride itself will be better or worse has yet to be seen, but really that might be irrelevant if the decision was made based on the best use of the land around the ride. I will definitely miss the theme personally - this is pretty much the only ride where I enjoy the queue and the safety instructions just as much as the ride itself. But nonetheless, I will be happy if this means they will be making good use of the area. And I'm willing to give them the benefit of assuming they will do a really good job on this new theme. The negative reaction is more motivation to make sure it's worth it.

Would they be getting rid of A Bug's Land to make a Marvel Land? And afterwards, are they going to create Frozen Land while they are at it?
Another thing, TOT is basically on the pathway to A Bug's Land. What about the walk to the TOT which is all of the is California themed? What will they do with that? Take it down after spending that much money on it?
At first when I heard about this; I thought it was a temporary thing to promote the new movie coming out. But I guess not?
No I don't believe Bugs land will become Marvel. Frozen will go into a Fantasyland expansion.

I'm worried about Monster's Inc. too. It's a really cute little dark ride and we enjoy it. I would have preferred the door coaster go in the back so this could stay. But I know that idea is far gone now. Too bad, if they'd acted on it years ago when it was first rumored we could be riding the thing by now.
I have heard Monsters Inc might be going away.

Like many of you I'm also a fan of ToT and disappointed about the change. ToT is and always has been a popular attraction unlike many others that can be refreshed or replaced. Nevertheless during the ride I often wondered how many actually know what the Twilight Zone actually is especially the younger crowd. Although knowing what the Twilight Zone is really doesn't effect the actual enjoyment of the ride just maybe the story a little. Since I can't stop the planned change to ToT I'm keeping an open mind and crossing my fingers that whatever changes are planned that they actually enhance the ride experience. I'm also hoping that the powers that be leave ToT alone at WDW. Being a local I plan on riding ToT as much as I can before it closes down.

Universal holds the rights to Marvel attractions on the east coast right now and probably for a while since they have done recent refurbishments on the attractions at Islands of Adventure, so that's safe.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone refer to it as "The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror" before now that I think of it since that's the actual name of the ride.

I've heard they will be getting rid of toon Town for this but keeping roger rabbit.
Not a fan of that decision if it happens, just like I wasn't a fan when rumors of Star Wars Land taking over ToonTown were making the rounds. Roger Rabbit is great, so obviously it would be good news for that ride if these rumors are true. I love ToonTown though.

to those who proclaim to know What Walt's intentions were, you need to check yourself.

Walt is dead now and no one here knew the man and what his decisions would be. It's totally possible he would have approved this if he were still alive.

I might get a lot of slack for this, but I'll say it anyway... but Disney does not owe us anything. They are a company that chooses to do what they want to do, and the fact is that we have to live with it. They will raise ticket prices if they want to. They will add new attractions wherever they want to add them. They will get rid of whatever they want to. If you don't like it, no one is forcing you to go.

They will announce things that will excite some of us, and make others sad... and vice versa. This is never going to stop.

It's really up to you if you want to keep visiting the park, but I wouldn't expect every announcement to please you.

I don't think I even realized it was the actual name! I've always thought of it more just as ToT and then they used Rod Serling and Twilight Zone to announce the backstory. I'm actually not extremely tied to Twilight Zone per se but I love the overall atmosphere of the attraction. And it fits as part of that "land". GOTG? Unless we're headed to a parallel universe where it was in old Hollywood it just doesn't fit the theme. Randomizing could be added just like they did at WDW - frankly, I don't really understand why it hasn't been already other than probably some park politics going on.

???? Well that would be dumb. Why get rid of the cool part and stick with the one ride that's as insignificant as GOTG will be in 10 years? Do you know how many days we've spent at DL in the last few years and only been on the Cartoon Spin once?!?! That ride doesn't appeal to anyone under 25, and those of us over 25 get to sick to ride it anyway. Not to mention it breaks down every half hour.

How do you know GOTG will be insignificant in 10 years? There is a second movie coming out and the Marvel universe only continues to grow. The first GOTG movie was incredibly popular. That ride doesn't appeal to anyone under the age of 25? false I am 18 and it appeals to me I am a big Roger Rabbit fan. Don't make generalizations about everyone.

As for keeping the ride and adding Frozen. Disneyland needs ride capacity and keeping the ride helps that. The Frozen ride is supposed to be the same one Tokyo is getting.

My 2 kids, 7 & 9, responded to me reading the news about ToT in this way: 9-1/2 year old pre-tween, angst-ridden girl brought to tears: "But ToT is the most awesome ride at California Adventure, that's my favorite ride, I hate superhero stuff." My 7-year old boy: "Mommy, that sucks and is stupid." That's about all I can say about it. My husband has mentioned that since we've been to DLR about 15 times with the kids, maybe we should start exploring other vacation spots, since it "never really changes" ... Hate to say it, maybe change will keep him interested in going to check out "what's new".

We go in October, and Miss 9-1/2 year old is planning on riding ToT basically all-day long. She's already told me about all the pictures she needs of herself in front of the ride too for her "memory book".

It'll be strange going as we plan next February, and ToT NOT be available at all. And, I read people have mentioned getting rid of Monster's Inc? Just as an aside - we all LOVE that ride :-) While hubby & DD ride ToT first ride always at DCA, my son and I always ride "Inc" as we call it, like 5-7 times in a row before it gets busy. I think it is one of the sweetest rides in all of DLR :-)

As Joe Rhode said in the video, this is the first in a lineup of all new Marvel attractions. Either Hollywoodland or the It's a Bugs Life area (hopefully both) is probably next on the chopping block to make way for whatever else they have planned which will fit the theme of the renovated ToT.

He also stated there will be other random effects in the video such as the music, lighting and possibly other things they're choosing not to reveal.

From the picture of the queue concept art, it hopefully looks like there will be animatronics similar to the new Kong ride in Islands of Adventure. It would be pretty cool if they choose to do that.

Why does this all sound like they're following the Universal Islands of Adventure plan.....or just plain old following Universal. People used to poopoo the thought but it feels like Disney is looking at Universal and going "dang - we need to do that too!".

The time and $$$'s spent to make DCA a more cohesive experience is now about to have the clock turned back by your description. It still wasn't perfect but it was way better. Plans must also include a name change for the park I would think?
