What do people think about Versailles ?

It's beautiful, especially the Hall of Mirrors, and the gardens. It's extremely busy and when we went it was in the middle of a heatwave (40C) so unbearably hot and we had to cut our visit short but so glad I've been. I'd like to go back one day to finish off what I didn't get to see which is Marie-Antoinette's hamlet.

Loved it, especially Marie-Antoinette's hamlet and boating on the lake. You can also hire bicycles down by the boating lake.

I am hoping we can visit next summer - planning on doing 4/5 days in Paris before we visit DLRP! My children, shamefully, have been to DLRP many times but haven't been into Paris! So, as they are getting a bit older, we've decided to have a visit.

So, this is a great question... as I'd like to know more!

My husband and I went to Versailles almost a year ago. We arrived early, we arrive everywhere early, so we were there about an hour and half before opening and were the first people in line. It was important to us to get there early so there weren't a lot of people right away, so you would have to make that determination for yourself. We had the Museum pass so we didn't have to wait in line to buy admission, just for the security and ticket collection. We were also there on a day that they ran the fountains, and that was not covered by the museum pass. So once we were done we had to buy tickets for that, but you don't have to go back up to the front of the palace for that there are ticket booths for the gardens at the entrance for the gardens. The fact that it was a fountain day did make it more busy, but to be honest I am really glad we were able to see the fountains running. They aren't running constantly that day, there are breaks, so we were able to see the fountains on and off and they really are more majestic running. The gardens are so beautiful and kind of fun to get "lost" in.

The palace itself is fantastic and the Hall of Mirrors is memorizing. We did notice that some people rushed ahead to get to the Hall of Mirrors to get empty hall pictures and then double-backed to the other rooms. So if an empty Hall of Mirrors is important to you, maybe that is something to keep in mind.

We did walk out to the Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, and the hamlet. By the time we got back from the hamlet we were famished so you might want to bring some small snacks with you. We did have lunch at a restaurant near the grand canal or whatever the big lake is called and it was decent food and not too high of prices.

Anyway, I do highly recommend Versailles if you haven't ever done it. It is easy to get to by the RER too. There is a lot to see and it would be something I might do again the next time I'm able to go back to France.

thanks ajrwdwgirl. I am going july 23th and it is a day when the fountains are running. How much time do you spend in Versalles??

We are going to be there on July 16th. There is no daytime fountain show unfortunately.

But I bought tickets for the night laser and fountain show, and also for the Serenade - dance in the Hall of Mirrors. I think this is going to be very pretty! But crowded again - I know :)

From my understanding, the palace and the surroundings are huge. And I didn't have much time to plan. So I bought a tour from Viator, they are going to show us around during the day. And after the tour we are on our own. I am looking forward!

We have car rental, and going to drive from Paris to Versailles ourselves.

And from there - after the fountain show is over - we are driving to DLP. It is going to be late and dark, but we should be alright, it is only an hour drive, and we will have GPS.

We should be to be alright - yes???! :joker::car::rolleyes1
