I will need to make daily calls to a UK landline from WDW - I know that offer a sim only deal but wonder what the signal is like from WDW. Anyone use recently or have any other advice? We won't have transport so the usual WAlmart etc. advice won't work. Thanks for any advice.

You could buy a cheap phone at the airport. Otherwise check and add on to your contract. Or face time free using the free wifi. Signal was mainly okay for me.

Hi

Research is required however I think mobile calls to the UK from the USA will be expensive no matter how you do it. I would look at Skype, Whatsapp or other voip applications. You will need a good wifi connection for this to work well or you could plug in a PC if you can get to a network point. There are lots of way to phone home for free or low cost we use voip every time we go. We stay outside of Disney and the apartment we stay in has great Internet so no issue "phoning home" everyday.

Regards Paul

Just get the 3 Sim Only contract, and give your cancellation notice immediately. We just did this, it cost £20 for loads of minutes and 12gb of data, all of which can be used in the USA with no extra cost to call either within the States, or back home. My wifes phone did keep going on T-Mobile which was annoying, but you can usually manually select a network abroad, so choose AT&T as their coverage was perfect in the whole of Orlando. :)

Whatsapp, Facetime or other voip calling is ok if the Wifi in Disney is stable at the time you want to make a call, but can be patchy if the park is busy. If this is coverage for a job or emergency, I'd suggest the 3 route

Or you can just do Three PAYG which is what we did on the trip we returned from last week. Would definitely do it again - just ordered a free SIM for me and the boyfriend then topped them up with £10 each. Really simple and worked great, can use it the same as your phone in the UK. I diverted my calls to the Three number and received calls and voicemails as normal, same for returning the calls.

We wanted it for the data mainly, which isn't as good on the Payg :) and I could hotspot off my wife's phone when needed which so we only spent the same lol

thanks for all the fantastic replies. The usual WhatsApp/facetime etc is no good (although my DS uses it constantly from WDW to his friends/gf) as I will need to phone my elderly parents and they don't have a computer or internet access of any description. I will have a look at the 3 network as that sounds the most promising. Thanks again.

I would also say three is the way to go. Pay as you go SIM's are free from their website and the rates are exactly the same as in the UK - for mobile in the USA to UK landline it's 3p a minute with top ups from £5 - or bundle up an add on if you want to use data as well as calling - £25 would give you unlimited data and 500 minutes to use in 30 days - although the data speed is throttled back from 3G/gG.

I forgot about that, it is heavily throttled.

And you can only use a max of 12gb while abroad

Yes speed is just about good enough for facebook or emails - maybe a skype call or two - no video and no tethering which is a pain - but best for calls home I think. I remember reading that they don't throttle the facebook app if that's your thing. I have done AT&T SIMs before but they cost a packet for data.
