PTR - Heading to the "Other Side" in July!!!

Alright, it’s been several years since I attempted a PTR, and never for Universal! Actually, I haven’t been to Universal in 15 years. And of course my kids have never been, so this is sort of like a “first trip”. We are seasoned WDW travellers, and even made our way to DL earlier this year! But looking forward to seeing the “other side” of Orlando for a change. :goodvibes

I’ve been having some trouble forcing myself to get organized for this trip, so I thought maybe doing a PTR would motivate me to nail things down a bit. So I’ll give it a go!

A little bit about our trip: We are staying 6 nights at RPR, Tue July 5 - Mon July 11. We are flying from Denver, CO. We’ll be spending the weekend prior and the 4th of July with my family in Naples, FL, then driving up on Tuesday from there.

A few quick introductions:

Me (Jaime) aka Mom - I consider myself the master travel planner of the family (actually just last night at dinner, DS made the comment that I was like the family’s “boss”, and DH agreed, lol!) I am currently a SAHM, after leaving my job as a middle school teacher several years ago. I wish I could list some serious hobbies, but let’s be realistic, being a mom is pretty much a full time hobby by itself. But I’m pretty darn good at obsessing over vacations, if that counts for anything.

20160211_135608-M.jpg

Brian aka Dad - He is a software developer for Google. He just took the job there last fall, after working for Adobe for several years. It involved a move for us, and has been a big adjustment for everyone. He loves the outdoors - mountain climbing, skiing, camping, etc. But also anything that can be an adventure - he’s really not into “relaxing” vacations, lol! Also loves good food, and can eat a lot. I mean, like a serious LOT, considering he only weighs about 130 lbs. Lucky dog.

Lily (12 years old) - Will almost be a teenager by our trip. We are thoroughly in the midst of middle school, and the angst that goes with it. I’ll warn you, she is an emotional basket-case on the best of days, and a total train-wreck on the worst. It could get rough. It usually does, lol! But we’ll make the best of it. She is on a water polo team, and swims competitively as well. And plays the oboe, and has recently started taking tennis lessons. We’re a little busy, if you didn’t guess. She has FINALLY gotten interested in Harry Potter, just in time for our trip, so I’m super excited for this.

Owen (5 years old) - I usually refer to him as my little ball of sunshine. Seriously, he is the sweetest, most affectionate and fun-loving kid you will ever meet. Pretty much the polar opposite of his sister, lol! He is just finishing up his kindergarten year, and since the move it has gone quite well. He loves his rock-climbing classes and is going to be on a swim team this summer! And wants to start tennis too. He has seen the HP movies and only likes them okay. He does love Curious George, Minions, Spiderman, and dinosaurs though, so I think there will be plenty to keep him happy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We are just over 2 months away from our trip. Actually, I believe exactly 2 months until we fly to FL. I have to admit, if we were going to Disney, I would have already laminated spreadsheets months ago with our plans mapped out minute-by-minute. :rotfl2:
But this has seemed like a more daunting task. I remember very little about the parks, and of course so much has changed since I was there last (maybe more about that trip later). It turns out that I am much better at planning than researching, I'm afraid.
The one good thing, is that once we are there, time is on our side. Between having the EP, EE, and lots of park days, surely we'll get to everything eventually, right? Even if my plan fails horribly. Or if I never manage to come up with one. That's my hope anyway!
More to come later :)
Oh yeah, I feel another satisfied customer coming the way to the Darkside!
Make sure you find some time to obsess over the following:
UO website - many don't like it, but I find it a very helpful tool - know the maps - and allow yourself the first day or two to roam a bit, take advantage of EP, and get a good lay of the land.
DISboard menu sticky - If your hubby is a food lover - that is the place to go for sure! You certainly don't need 6 month ADRs, but a few reservation 2 weeks out for a couple of signature meals in July may be in order.
RPR Hotel Sticky - schumi and mac have done a great job compiling information on RPR - a great resort - even if you only read page 1.
Don't forget, you are encouraged to pool hop and check out the other resorts, so plan a little time at HRH and PB, since we all know already that you will be back! Plus, there are some great eats at all of the resorts (RPR, HRH, and PB)!
We will be there 6/11 to 6/19, and can't wait to hear how your "1st visit" goes!
We never plan anything, always works out a fabulous trip every time............:D
Sounds like you're going to have a lot of fun on your trip......kids are great ages to visit........there'll be something for everyone to enjoy.
And staying at RPR and having EP is an excellent decision........beautiful resort and 6 days will give you loads of time to enjoy the resort too without rushing around.
Looking forward to reading about your trip........always enjoy new trip reports from fresh eyes........
YAY! Another trip report in the making! I second everything VacaPlanner and Schumi said. Can't wait to read more.
Haha, I do love having lots of good things to obsess over :)
I've actually had both park maps from the website open in a browser tab for several weeks. Still can't remember what is in which park though, it's just not sticking for some reason. And the rest of the time I've spent on their website has been shopping, lol! Gotta get our HP wardrobe ready ;)
I haven't checked the menu sticky yet, that might help me fill in a few holes. I'm hoping we can get away with doing at least a few lunches as CS. DH has pretty much put his foot down to that at WDW, but maybe he'll give it a try here at least.
Thanks, I've really enjoyed reading through some of the RPR sticky, learned several good things there already :)
I'm such a planner, I'm having a hard time accepting that I may not "need" to here, lol! Though at the rate I'm going, that may be a good thing.
Thanks! Hopefully I'll get my thoughts together better now that I have to type them out :)
OK I have to share what I found today. I had been debating going bagless, but ultimately decided it would be too hard.
So I thought I'd just find something smaller than my usual WDW backpack (a Disney Vera Bradley, was feeling a little traitorous to carry it here anyway!).
Might as well make it a HP one, right??? This came up almost immediately in my search.
O.M.G. Had. To. Have. It.
Snape was my very favorite character of the whole series.
So, that's one thing I can check off the list, lol!
I also got a similar one for DD (just says Hogwarts Alumni). Now to see if she'll actually use it...
i just love trip reports !!
please join us in the other forums on the darkside if you have questions or need help.
i'm locking in here now and going along for the planning ride with you!
A Brief History of Everything
Well, everything that matters. I do believe that to know where you’re going, you have to know where you’ve been. So a quick recap of our Disney/Universal/SeaWorld/etc adventures. It will definitely influence this trip, and it just seems like fun to write it all out :)
Childhood (80’s and 90’s) I grew up mostly in Tennessee, and took lots of trips to Orlando. Usually spontaneous. Like, hey let’s go to Disney World next week! (And by “Disney World”, my parents really meant Orlando, including Universal, Sea World, etc. They still have a hard time differentiating between them. We would bounce back and forth between them throughout the week.)
We would drive down, not even bothering to find a hotel until we were there. Nothing was planned or researched. We just showed up when we felt like it, and bought our tickets at the gate. We didn’t talk about which park we were going to until we got up that day. And I didn’t even know that TS restaurants existed, lol! I realize now that we did miss out on a lot by doing it this way, but I also have a lot of good memories from those trips, so it’s okay. (But, no pictures, sadly. Probably buried in boxes in my parents storage unit, lol!)
In college, DH and I made several short trips as well, similar in nature to my childhood ones. Both Disney and Universal. Sometimes my parents came along, sometimes it was just to two of us. Our planning was so poor, that one time we showed up at the parking booths only to realize we had no money. Wasted an hour trying to find an ATM, ended up in the middle of some chaos at ASSp looking for one, and to this day DH still refuses to ever set foot in a value resort again! The kids and I have snuck in a few trips without him though, they really aren’t that bad.
Very few pictures of these trips exist unfortunately, since I didn't own a camera in college. But that may be a good thing, lol!
Universal / IoA - March 2001 DH had recently started his first career job, and I was finishing up my senior year (at Georgia Tech, in Atlanta. We had gotten married the year before) One Saturday afternoon, we happened to catch a Travel Channel show about the new park that had just opened at Universal - Islands of Adventure. It was the first we had heard of it, and sat intrigued while they talked about all the cutting edge technology they had used. We were mesmerized. I think we went online that very night and booked our trip, lol!
It was the first trip that we actually did any planning and research for. Of course, still nothing to the extent that I do now, but it was revolutionary for me at the time. It opened my eyes to how much more you can do when you put a little effort into your plans, and I would carry that with me for all future vacations.
We invited my parents along (they live in FL) and my sister came as well. We packed all 5 of us into a tiny little cabin at the KOA, lol! My parents were not amused, but it fit the budget at the time.
Overall, it was a great trip. We were amazed at the theming of IoA, and really enjoyed the new coasters as well as Jurassic Park. though we were bummed that we couldn’t go on Pteranodon Flyers, since we did have a kid with us, lol! And DH was especially fond of Seuss Landing, having been a Dr. Seuss fan since he was a kid.
And that was the last time I went to Universal. Actually, after this trip, we entered a theme park void for the next 7 years. I guess we were just busy. Starting our careers, having a baby, moving across the country, buying a house, etc. We did take some other vacations, including Yellowstone, Hawaii, and Mexico. But for whatever reason, Orlando had fallen off our radar.
Disney World - June 2008 This was THE Disney trip. The trip of a lifetime. DD’s first Disney experience, and we wanted to give her what we felt we had never really had as a kid - a true “Disney Vacation”. So we did it up right. 9 days at POLY. And just about every character meal on property, lol! She was in princess heaven, and we had an amazing time. It was a magical week, one that I would spend the next few years trying desperately to repeat, to no avail. But it re-awakened my love for Disney, and I was now obsessed.
Disney World & Sea World - December 2008 Desperately missing our vacation from summer, we spent a couple of days here with my parents, sister, and my brother’s family when we came to visit them at Christmas. Wasn’t the same for sure, but we did have a LOT of fun.
image165-S.jpg
seaworld009-S.jpg
Disney World- June 2010 This was supposed to be my magical repeat of 2008. But, we had decided to bring all my IL’s. (9 of us total) And I was 6 months pregnant. (Hadn’t expected that to be the case when we booked the trip a year earlier!) Long story short, there were challenges. Both IL and preggo related. Didn’t really love CBR. And it wasn’t the magical week I had hoped for. But, we did enjoy it, and the cousins had a lot of fun together. My FIL passed away unexpectedly less than two years later, so we definitely don’t regret having those memories with him.
Disney World - March 2012 Quick, non-parks trip with my parents at ASMo. I was missing Disney something fierce, and this quelled the urge a little. DH wasn’t with us and made us promise "no parks" without him, but we did just about everything else! I was surprised at how much I liked ASMo.
Legoland - December 2012
My brother & his family, as well as my dad, joined us for a quick visit, as part of the kid’s Christmas present. I wish we had more time here, it really is a fun park with a lot of unique stuff. I’m determined to get back sometime soon, now that Owen would be able to do more.
Disney World - April 2013 Owen’s first “real” Disney vacation, 9 days at YC. I was hoping that finally, I could repeat that special 1st visit magic. But, this was the trip of the Plan Fail. It was the best, most perfected, and most obsessed-over plan I had ever made. And it completely fell apart by day 3. But, it was okay. We regrouped, re-prioritized, and still had a lot of fun. I learned a lot on this trip. A lot about vacations, about our family, about life in general. And finally, I think I realized that our trip in 2008 was special. And that it deserved to be. And was finally okay with never repeating it.
Disney World - March 2014 A mixed bag sort of trip. When we weren’t busy dealing with temper tantrums, a sick boy, tickets that wouldn’t work, etc, we actually fell in love with AKL, and spent a couple of nice days at AK and Epcot, as well as Kennedy Space Center. DH could only stay a few days, then my parents joined us for the rest of the week at AoA. (Mental note - never transition to a value FROM a deluxe, lol!) This was the beginning of a new era for us- more frequent but shorter trips. I was finally willing to be more “casual” about our Disney-ing, now that I wasn’t trying to recreate our first trip.
Busch Gardens, Williamsburg -July 2014 I only mention this because the theming reminded me so much of Disney and Universal. I had totally underestimated it, assuming it was just a typical "amusement park". Now I really want to get to the one in FL sometime!
Disney World - October 2014
A very quick trip, just for MNSSHP. My parents came, and brought my niece and nephew along. There was drama from the kids (the cousins had a falling-out almost immediately, and Owen was afraid of all the rides), but an overall enjoyable evening, once the dust settled. And I liked POR more than I thought I would.
PhotoPass_Visiting_Magic_Kingdom_7065119025-S.jpg
Disney World - December 2014 Probably my second favorite trip of all (after 2008) Another short trip, but man we packed in a LOT. Including an epic, 18-hr day at MK. And the best character meal ever at 1900PF, while DD was obsessed with the Mad Hatter. The boys also spent a morning at Epcot, while us girls got pampered at GF. We stayed at WL - the location was great, but I still liked the theming of AKL better.
IMG_8838-M.jpg
Nickelodeon - May 2015 Okay, random, but I had to add it because it was so much fun. Just a quick visit with my parents for Owen to meet the Ninja Turtles at their pizza dinner. The hotel rooms leave a little to be desired, but the character interaction was far better than anything Disney does.
We had a couple of other trips planned in 2015 (one of which was THIS Universal trip, more about that later) but both got nixed because of various scheduling issues.
Disneyland - February 2016 We had originally planned to go back to WDW, and maybe Universal too, in March. But, DD joined a water polo team, and they had a tournament in California, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see the west-coast Disney. It meant giving up our spring break plans, but I was glad we got the chance to see DL and DCA. Not quite the immersive experience that WDW is, but they have some unique attractions.
And that brings us to now! If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all these trips, it’s to be careful about expectations. When I get it in my head that a trip is going to “be” a certain way, I am setting myself up for failure. The magic always happens during the things I didn’t expect. And I have to be open to those moments, not distracted by trying to create different ones. So, while I want to know enough, and have enough of a plan, to make sure we don’t miss out, I don’t want to feel like I’ve lived the whole trip in my head before it actually happens. It’s a fine line to walk, lol!
Oh so true, what a great start!!!! This is gonna be a great TR, no doubt about it.
My son (now 12) will never forget leaving Margaritaville for our walk back to Hard Rock Hotel, it was sunny, at least in our memories. But the strongest rain I have ever been in started out of nowhere and we had no ponchos. We ran as fast as we could back to the hotel, but we were absolutely SOAKED when we got there. Only one thing to do, jump in the pool fully clothed!!!!
Unplanned magic is awesome!!!
Yes!! That's the kind of magic I'm talking about :)
It's easy to get caught up in trying so hard to make everything perfect, that we miss the moments that actually could have been perfect.
Oh you're going to have so much fun at USO! I can so relate to those pre-planning crazed trips, we often vacationed to various places and never planned like you have to do now (esp for WDW). I did USO a long time ago as a kid, probably in 89ish maybe? I dunno but it was cool but I don't remember much except ET, Back to the Future, Jaws, T2, Disaster and Twister LOL I am sure there were other rides, but those are the only ones that stick out to me. So my family went last year for the first time (after a wonderful May 09 WDW vacation) and we had a blast! I was drinking the Disney kool-aid no doubt but I sure was so happy to not have to obsessively plan our vacation this time. We upgraded our 3 day tickets to APs by the end of the 2nd day! lol
I look forward to reading much more!
Oh ET was my absolute favorite ride as a kid, around the same time you went. I made my parents take me on it over and over again, lol!
I probably should have gotten at least one of us an AP. With the free parking I think it would have covered the difference. Unfortunately the tickets I bought said they couldn't be upgraded. Oh well!
I kind of hope we don't fall "too" in love with USO, simply because we have so many days of Disney tickets left. That's a much cheaper option for us right now!
Following along on your PTR. I to am in your shoes. We are seasonal disney goers and for our upcoming trip have decided to venture over to the other side of town!!! We will be doing only 4 nights on property at one of the villas (we are dvc owners) and then spend 4 nights off property. I look forward to reading along
We thought about doing a split stay. Actually had it booked that way a couple of different times, but it finally worked out better to do a Universal-only trip. We'll be heading back to Disney in December :)
Which dvc do you own at? We have stayed in the villas at AKL and WL. We rented points both times. It's been tempting to buy points somewhere, but I'd probably never convince DH, lol!
We own at AKL Kidani but we will be staying in the tree houses at SSR this time. We stayed at WL last June. Loved it! Such a beautiful resort. My hubby had a hard time when I brought up buying points, he really did not want to, so i did what any wife would do, I booked 3 nights at BLT in a 2 bedroom theme park view, paid rack rate (ouch), and then once he was in conplete and utter amazement, I told him how much it cost, we met with a guide the next day!!!!!
LOVE this start and your brief history of past trips. I could do the same...but it would be much longer as you can see from my siggy. We've developed quite a history, mostly Disney but we are amusement park lovers overall so we've made many family trips centered around amusement parks over the last 20 years or so. Just one comment I wanted to make...you mentioned BG Williamsburg. We LOVE that park (living in MD it's a quick drive there) and we finally tried BG Tampa a few years ago. We really loved BG Tampa (thought not quite as much as BGW) and we are actually making a return trip there this summer. We also have done Legoland...loved it also but kids are just beyond the rides there now. Our upcoming Universal Trip this summer is finally a time for us to all ride EVERYTHING together...instead of somebody having to stay behind with kids not big enough to ride.
I have to say I also second your love for AKL, and while we've stayed there a few times as DVC members, I still think we love Bay Lake Tower even more and Polynesian Villas Studio was a close second for us. Still something really great about AKL.
Oh I love AKL, it's my favorite. Though we've only stayed at Jambo. And I really want to stay in a Treehouse Villa sometime, that is so cool! I probably missed my best chance a few years ago when we brought my ILs and there were 9 of us. I could have gotten one for just a little more than our 3 rooms at CBR, but I was nervous that the sleeping arrangements wouldn't work out as well. But someday we'll have to splurge for it.
Yay! Thanks for joining in.
I was really blown away by BG in Williamsburg. I expected it to be something like a Six Flags. But we were going to be in the area during a long, and very education-focused trip, so I figured one day of pure fun was in order. I was really amazed at how themed and generally well-run it was. It's unfortunate that Legoland doesn't have as much to appeal to the older kids. Lily was a great age for it last time, but now that Owen is, she may not find it all that exciting. That's the problem with having kids 7 years apart!
BLT is another place on my to-try list! We were originally planning to stay there in 2013, but at the last minute DH wanted to stay near Epcot to take better advantage of all the restaurants there. (Because again, he really likes to eat!) AKL is probably my very favorite resort so far, with Poly a close second. Though I hate what they have done to the lobby.
I so know what you mean about being able to ride everything together. We are getting closer to that each time, but still have to split up quite a bit. Again, with the kids being so far apart, we will have a very small window in which Lily is still at home and Owen is able and willing to ride everything. I'm hoping we'll be there in a couple more years, which will still give us 3 years with both of them together.
The first time we stayed at AKL was an adults-only trip for DH and myself. He convinced me to take a DVC tour, even though I was against it. We had previously stayed in DVC resort by renting points from another owner (using these boards) and we loved it. However I figured I would just keep doing that. The guide wasn't pushy...and although we didn't purchase while there, we did return home and buy into SSR...and haven't regretted it. That was back in 2006.
We have stayed in a treehouse, and while I really liked it and so did the kids, we were with my in-laws and SIL and nephew and I don't think anybody else appreciated the isolation from nearby SSR resort (for things like food and drinks...we tend not to do too much cooking even though we could). I'd love to stay there again one day though. I love Kidani as well, we were one of the first to stay there when it opened, that was back in May 2009. The 2BR there was so great for all of us and we've stayed since then and always loved it. I think behind BLT and Poly, it would be my next choice...then the Beach Club and Boardwalk Resorts.
