Food in hand luggage?

I'm afraid I am suffering from brain freeze! It's only been two years since we last went but for the life of me I can't remember if we can take food in our hand luggage?

I'm just thinking of a few cereal bars/biscuits and sweets for the girls, is this permitted?

Thanks.

Ali

Absolutely fine. Don't put any fresh produce (fruit, vegetables, etc) in there. If you must, make sure you leave any left overs on the plane when you arrive in the US and just declare on your customs form that you have food with you. It doesn't matter if it's in hand or hold luggage, as long as you declare it. In fact, I prefer to have food in my carry-on, not in the hold bags. The cereal bars and things you mention are permitted though. Have a safe journey and a wonderful trip :)

We always have snacks in our hand luggage (and usually food in our checked bags too) its absolutely fine just declare it on the customs form as Lee said if you take it off the plane :thumbsup2

Don't forget about the liquid rules...

No container above 100ml and all must be contained in a clear, sealed bag.

Thanks everyone!

Just wanted to take enough snacks for on the plane in case the girls don't like their meals etc......

Thanks for your help!

Ali.

I thought you couldn't buy any food for your hand luggage until you got air side? Is that not right???? Seems I may have been getting it wrong for a decade......

I think you're confusing that with water/liquds. You can take what ever food you want through security, even fresh food (veg/fruit etc)

However you are not allowed to take fresh food through the American customs once you land.

So if you've got fruit in your bag you've got to eat it in the airport or on the plane before you land.

Liquids on the other hand are different. You're not allowed to take any liquid greater than 100ml through security (e.g. a bottle of water). So you'd have to buy a bottle of water air side.

I hope that helps.

lol reading about the liquids reminded me what I saw when I returned home, a woman was carrying her new very expensive perfume as hand luggage till customs officers stepped and told her to bin it, desperately clinging onto her bottle of perfume she grabbed her kids water bottles emptied them and started filling up 100ml each for them to carry lol

don't bring your new perfume as hand luggage ;)
