Yes the points are returned to your account. I believe the security fee ($5.60 each way) is refundable but you have to ask them to refund it. Otherwise it will show up in your Travel Funds and can be used towards another flight. You will need the reservation confirmation number from the cancelled flight to pull up those Travel Funds.
I was reading on Flyer Talk that when you cancel a flight, there is a check box or a dropdown that by default is set to "hold for future use" but you can change it to "request a refund". That thread was from last year so perhaps Southwest has changed it since then to default to refunding the money. Or maybe you are more observant than I was and spotted the drop down! I had to call to get the money refunded but it was over a year ago so perhaps they've made it automatic now.I've never had to ask. Just gets refunded to the card I paid with.
Thanks. Good to know in case I have to cancel another flight. There are two options ... each with a box (to check) next to them.
You can choose Refund or Hold funds for future use ... TTF
