Narrowing it Down...Costa Rica Questions

After months of planning and analyzing itineraries and locations we have finally narrowed it down to Costa Rica – either Tauck or ABD. This will be our first tour style vacation and are trying to now decide which company to go with. We are loyal Disney-goers and are DVC members, that being said I am trying to be objective about who we choose, so I was hoping to get some particulars before making a final decision. So here are my questions…
  • We are a family of 3 travelling with a family of 4 with the youngest being 9. I know recently there have been a lot of posts regarding the way different companies handle triples and quads. Is there any significant differences between Tauck and ABD on this particular itinerary?

  • Are the hotels either company uses particularly nicer than the others? I know each has one hotel that does not have air conditioning.

  • Are there any recent trip reports from ABD? The last one posted in the sticky is from 2013.

  • How are alcoholic beverages handled between the two companies for this particular trip? Are any included? I noticed Disney has on the trip FAQ page…Alcoholic beverages are not included with your scheduled meals. However, you may purchase them at your own expense.

  • Any glaring differences between the itineraries? They both seem to have zip-lining, white water rafting, night time turtle trek and the pineapple plantation. Tauck I believe has an extra day and offers chocolate making and optional horseback riding but Disney has the mojito making and catamaran excursion.

  • We are trying to book early before prices increase but if they have already increased is there any way to include the other family we are travelling with on our DVC price lock?

  • Does Tauck use travel agents that include discounts?
Sorry for all the questions! Thanks in advance!

Funny you should ask about this just now. We were just trying to find answers to some of these questions without much luck. We just recently booked on the Costa Rica ABD for next spring break, but have one family member still campaigning for us to switch to Tauck. Both trips look really good. I'm convinced you can't go wrong with either one. I plan to do a trip report when we get back if no one's done a thorough updated one in the meantime, but that's 9 months off.

I did this trip Spring Break 2014. When we were at Tortugura (spelling probably wrong)there was a Tauk tour there too at same hotel. ABD flew in and bussed out while Tauck bussed in and out. The flight was nice and the bus ride was long so was glad only did it one way.

I know; I'm not sure why there's so little info out there about this trip.

We are looking at Costa Rica for spring break as well and I am still torn. I think I like the TB itinerary and hotels better but think the ABD might be better for the kids. They are great travelers and will be 10, 7 and almost 5, but I still worry they might be too young. But they wanted to do Costa Rica over Disneyland, much to my surprise.

The one we're booked on for our spring break (March) is fairly full, and has a huge number of kids booked, if you include teens. So far my daughter is the youngest (she'll be 5), but I think they said there are 6 and 9 year old girls, two 10 or 11 year old boys, and maybe 6 girls between 11 and 17. I_think_ she said there were already something like 10 kids booked before we booked our 2. The kids actually outnumbered the adults, before I added 4 adults! We went with ABD because I thought it would be great for the kids. DD is very social, and absolutely loves being with other kids. (DS is shy, and very family oriented. He likes having other kids around, but honestly, he is just as happy to be with us.)

We'll probably try Tauck Bridges sometime, but I'm really looking forward to trying ABD!

I was initially concerned about the hotels of the ABD trip also but that was primarily based on the last trip report which was from 2013. It seems as though the whole last leg of the trip, as well as the final hotel has changed since then. I was disappointed to see the elimination of the horseback riding but I do like the catamaran excursion over the sugar cane plantation. I also like this portion of ABD's trip over TB's chocolate making last day. Despite that fact that the TB trip is a whole day longer and less expensive we will probably be booking ABD.

So we have decided to go to Costa Rica for spring break too, but after going through the full itinerary for both trips, the kids all picked the TB trip over ABD. I was kind of surprised as they are big DCL kids. I will make sure to come back post a mini trip report just for anyone else pondering CR, especially since WDWmom is going to do the ABD trip at pretty much the same time.

We are leaving for the Costa Rica ABD in 13 days (yay!) - would be happy to answer questions when we are back!

I can't wait to hear about your trip, especially the last hotel and that part of the itinerary that's new. Enjoy!

Thanks!! We added on an extra night at the end, an extra day/night on the beach sounded too good to pass up :) We are so excited!

The last hotel looks very nice but I think we have to add a pre night because we are booking flights on points and the only one available lands at midnight.
