Split stay and 180+10?

Hi all -

We have done split stays before and have been afforded the 180+ rule from our first day of check in. I called in today, was told I couldn't book ADR's, and was asked (in a snotty tone) "Is there a reason why you aren't staying at the same resort the whole time?"

Has there been a rule change? The agent said there was nothing she could do.

thanks!

Sarah

It was never a rule, but more of a glitch that they "fixed." 180+10 allowed you to book ten days forward regardless of where (or if!) you were continuing your stay. Recently, they limited the +10 to instead match the published benefit of booking for the duration of your stay, instead of ten indiscriminate days. And now they extended that restriction to the phone lines as well.

Yes, unfortunately those of us who enjoy on property split stays no longer get +10. I am super sad about it.

I'm guessing this is a new update? I was able to make ressies at my 180 mark. Did you have your room reservations and tickets on MDE? Perhaps that was the difference?

It's new for online (implemented about a year ago), and newer for the phone reps (probably three months ago).

We have AP's and 1 room ressie via DVC and 1 room ressie via central reservations. I think its really cruddy that we are staying on property (with two different confirmation numbers on disney property) but because we are staying at 2 different resorts we don't get the full 180+10 advantage. Its not like we are staying 1 night at disney and 10 days off property. It just seems unfair that if we could have used 180+10 for 1 reservation but don't get the full advantage because we are staying at 2 disney resorts due to availability. Whatever, I guess.

So, if we are staying 4 nights POR and 6 nights WL, I can't make dining ressies for the WL days until 180 days from WL checkin? Do I only get to make ressies for the 5 days of the first ressie?

Correct. We had this problem when trying to make ADRs for our trip in october. we have 4 nights at BWV and 4 at AKL. Could only make reservations for the first 4 days at 180 days out from BWV check-in and had to wait to book for the last half until we were 180 out from AKL check-in. very frustrating :(

Yup, that is correct. Despite the fact that you are moving to another Disney owned resort, it doesn't count for the 180+10. It used to but not anymore. It is incredibly frustrating. I think one of my biggest irritations of learning this today was the accusatory tone that 2 cast members had on the phone when they said "so why are you staying at two resorts? Why don't you just change your reservation to be one resort?" As if it was my fault we couldn't book the entire stay at one resort.

That said, the 3rd cast member was incredibly friendly and helpful.

It makes me feel like Disney is intentionally trying to make booking their resorts as "unmagical" as possible. Parks that are continually under construction, computer programs that are unreliable, rooms that are inferior for the price.
When I spend $200-300 per night for a room, I don't expect to jump through hoops on a daily basis. They are sucking the magic right out of their vacation packages. IMO

Agreed - it feels like being penalized for wanting to try out other resorts.

As a followup, on the morning I first posted this, my husband fired off an angry email to customer service at Disney. They did call back (and after phone tag) we were able to connect in person. She was very nice, apologized, etc. I explained we had gotten the reservations worked out due to an extraordinary cast member and her supervisor (we sent a separate thank you email after it got worked out) and expressed my concerns about the computer system not recognizing a split stay.

At the end of it, she listened to me and apologized but it didn't sound like anything would get changed.

Ok, then I see the glitch they are trying to fix - if you could reserve 1 night in the cheapest on site room and then reserve 9 additional nights of ADRs even though you were staying off site then I guess they needed to fix that.
Perhaps it's too complicated programming wise to get the computer to recognize split stays - you do get different reservation numbers.
In my case for our 11 or 12 night stays I've always had to get up early at least 2 mornings - and as I live on the west coast we're talking 4 am.
This Dec. stay I've got 3 nights at AKV Kidani solo, 5 nights AKV Jambo and 3 nights BWV w/ my son. So 3 4am mornings for me, I guess. Just hope the computer recognizes the +10 and doesn't limit me to booking one day at a time as there are reports that it does not sometimes w/ DVC reservations ( a "known problem" in Disney speak.) I hate the waiting an hour till the phone lines open up then the 20+ minutes listening to muffled/underwater sounding Disney music until a CM picks up.

I too am having the same issue. Sadly I am staying at 3 different resorts over Thanksgiving. I am fearful we will be eating from the Nacho cart on Thanksgiving!!! =( This is my third trip to WDW and I have never had such a hard time getting my ADRS. Yet, I was able to score some huge ones so I am happy. =) And we will be at WDW so we will all be happy eating from the Nacho cart if it comes to that!!! ; ) LOL!
That said I don't think it is fair I have to wait 3 times. I really don't understand the issue. When I pull up the reservation calendar it is highlighted for my entire trip not just my first resort stay. That said it still won't let me book. I can understand that it may be a computer issue but, I feel I should be able to call and get my ADRS. I am paying for 9 nights on Disney property with no gaps. What does it matter that I am staying at 3 different resorts? Why am I being penalized? = (

The programming though should allow them to link the stays or at least override the block if there are 2 back to back stays - I agree that booking 1 night in the cheapest room and then staying off site is gaming the system. But people who are legitimately moving to a different on-site resort should not have to call multiple times and have to argue to book.

My best advice is to send off an email to customer service. I don't know if they track complaints but hopefully if enough people complain, they can change something.

I still struggle with the accusatory tone 2 out the 3 phone cast members used on the phone with regards to why we were doing a split stay and suggesting that we cancel one reservation to make the stay not split.

At any rate we got dinner at Be Our Guest but it should not have taken the amount of time that it took to get it.

I asked about this the last time I called in for something as we are doing a DVC split stay in December. The CM told me that they could do it over the phone for the +10, they just needed to create a "phantom reservation number" that would span the whole stay and use that to book the ADRs.

This is how we ended up being able to book our ADR's but still it seems overly complex.

I hate this new rule as well! I could book most of my ressies yesterday but Thanksgiving Day falls when I am at my second resort so I can't book until Thursday and I am concerned I won't get Boma. I had problems getting BOG and it would have been easier seeing later in the week if dinner times are available but I feel this new way complicates things and people who can start booking will get those slots now.

I have a split stay with DVC. One with points the other with cash. I booked a room at one of the All Stars for the entire stay. I hate I had to do this, but Thanksgiving is a rough week for ADRs.

This is an interesting Thread.

From Disney's point of view - a split stay costs them money. Check-outs cost them more money. They want you to stay put.

From Customer point of view - but I'm staying at Disney.

Since we often stay at DVC properties with kitchens, we're doing more in-room dining by way of prepared food deliveries from Whole Foods for some of our split-stays.

Because - like many who've posted on this Thread, Disney's attitude seemed annoying and most Disney food is not worth the trouble anyway.
