How old is too old to dress up for characters?

My oldest daughter will be 8 when we sail and she is still very much into princesses. The last time we were at Disney, she was in her Elsa dress and a girl in line behind her made a smart comment and laughed at her for being "dressed up like a kid". Um, she is a kid.....thanks very much :rolleyes1 Anyway, I thought I would ask here...There will be other girls her age dressed up, right? I personally want her to retain that innocence for as long as possible, but my husband wants me to make sure she isn't "too old". Thoughts?

On a Disney cruise there is no age limit.

(1) Do not worry about other peoples comments, they're not important.

(2) Your as old as you feel and as young as you feel, I have seen grown adults get dressed up as characters and they do not care of idle comment.

My teenage son goes on the cruise and says he will not dress up then come pirates night he wisks me down to the shops to buy pirate gear. Disney brings it out in you.

Do what you want to do, and do not worry about other peoples comments.

Basically its down to your children how comfortable they feel, what they want to do, and they need to understand in the real world some people like to comment and you need to do what you want to do and not shy away from anythnig because one person says something negative.

And think...

When you wish upon a star....it doesnt matter how old you are!!!
Anything your heart desires...will come true.

Aw, tell your little girl that that girl was probably just a little envious. I love seeing people of all ages enjoying the blessings and joys of life, including dressing up! :sunny: She should dress up anytime she wants! Heck, DH and I have dressed up for Pirate Night on the cruise and we have 3 grands! :yay:

My daughter was 15 on this cruise and dressed up as Tinkerbell. I agree with Disney Fantasy. Who the heck cares what other kids think. My 9 year old dressed up in a Anna costume and a dress with snowflakes. This is YOUR cruise. Don't let anyone else dictate how you spend it! I let both my kids decide for themselves what they wanted to do.

Thanks so much! Let me clarify a bit and let everyone know that I don't care one BIT what others think, but my daughter now feels a bit self conscious. I know after I order a few new costumes for her, that will change a bit, but I just didn't want to be the mom with her Disney blinders on! :) As usual, much thanks to each of you!

There was a grown woman dressed as a (beautiful, I might add) Tinkerbell on our last cruise. An entire family dressed as Cinderella and Prince Charming. I had a crown on for Princess night (as did many others)...my kiddo was in her princess gowns.

Tell your daughter to tell the offenders that she is sorry that they already lost the magic.

Considering that the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique is offering the princess makeovers for ages 3 to 12, I would say that even the official Disney line is that kids until 12 years old should dress as princesses!

I know that in the parks adults are not allowed to dress up as characters outside the Halloween parties in order to avoid confusion.

Never too old...here is my 78 year old MIL on the WBPC.

I'm 50. I don't do parades, I don't do character breakfasts, I don't have my picture taken with characters, I don't participate at dance parties or other childish type events. Well, except when Disney does it. I have some pictures of DH and I with Mickey and Minnie wearing traditional Italian dress, pictures of everyone at our table with Mickey wearing a traditional Greek kilt. I've got pictures of me wearing a giant Minnie bow on my head at a character breakfast on the Magic and a great picture of DH where Pluto is trying to eat his head. I've danced like an idiot at the pirate party, the sail away party, hugged Goofy dressed up like Napoleonic soldier in Corsica. DH insists on going to every single parade at WDW, sometimes more than once, where he takes hundreds of pictures. Love Shakeyshakey's picture of MIL - she looks fabulous! Somehow, they pull you into the whole thing and, on a ship where there's a small and limited community of people who are all there because they love Disney, no one will look at you and think that you're acting or dressing like a kid regardless of your age. They're probably taking pictures and trying to figure out how to do it themselves. Everyone had a bit of a child inside and Disney brings it out in you!

I agree with everyone - dress up and have fun - but I also think you have to take your lead from her and not force it. If she says she doesn't want to dress out before the cruise I'd probably still pack at least one outfit since she'll probably change her mind.

You are *never* too old to dress up. I'm 46 years old and I still wear costumes. Heck, I dress as a clonetrooper and act like a life-sized action figure. The day you lose the child in you is the day you start getting old, and I, for one, will *never* lose the child in me.
