Marathon Weekend 2016

After my excitement faded a little, I'm feeling kinda bad. Like if I had cheated... :confused3

I have a lot I could say right now, but rather than rehash what everyone else is saying, I'm just going to say this:
There is a possibility that this could be my last runDisney weekend for a while, just because of scheduling issues. At first I was pretty upset about that, but now ... I could really live without the sleepless nights and/or nightmares about registration. I'm not willing to blame runDisney or Active entirely, but I think this whole registration experience (including having to be on the second registration opens (or earlier) or you will get closed out, which has nothing to do with the website) is not easy for someone like me.
I don't know how well I'll sleep tonight, but at least I know that it'll be over tomorrow afternoon either way.

I TOTALLY get what you're saying. Trust me - W&D was enough to end me on rD. So, that's why I registered my family for the races they wanted to do tonight when I saw I could. My card has been charged. I have confirmations. The runners show up on the official website as registered. They got my money tonight instead of tomorrow - I can't imagine they care at this point.

But yes. Someone effed up this time around on the registration page. And it shouldn't be the people forking over the $$ that are penalized. I think there are just too many of us at this point. Just look at the number of people on this thread alone that have done it. To reverse a credit card charge, it takes minimum 20 minutes PER charge dealing with your online processor and going through all the steps for why you're canceling a charge.

In this case - people registered something ahead of time, but not before the service/event was available. It's been available for purchase for two weeks - and being DVC/AP doesn't count, because the event provided to them is no different than what is available right now.

Yep, 10k is asking for a password. THAT HUGE MORAL DILEMMA FOR NOTHING!

Seriously, though, I can't take a sell out before I can get online. Not after Lilly for Target. I don't want life to be a series of flash sales. We did the 5k last year and just got our nerve up for the 10k; and I missed early registration for DVC/APers because I logged on 1 hr late-- I was incredulous. Our youngest has a drs appointment at 10 am, which couldn't be more poorly timed if I tried, work is a 45 min drive--I took a half day which would mean I'd be getting in to work right at 12:30 or so. Which of course is really not an option if I need to be psychotically refreshing at noon--which I am no longer even sure will do the trick!

I can only hope his doctor can miraculously see us early and I can get to work early and avoid my boss for the hr it will take to get onto the site. OH EARLY REGISTRATION YOU FOOLS GOLD, YOU!

But honestly, I find this all quite frustrating and some part of me thinks there HAS to be a better way--a closer meeting of supply and demand. I think when the races sell out in an hour or less we're nearing a place of absurdity. Or is this just frustration talking?

AGREED. Just, agreed.

I just went into the 5k like three times just to see if I t still needed a password...and it did. I better go to sleep before I stay up all night hitting refresh for no reason.
I am happy for everyone who got in. Now let's all say a prayer for the other races we all need!!!

Not zero drop, but I made the switch from a super-high drop Mizuno to low-drop shoes (2-4mm) years ago and never looked back. I'm a solidly forefoot striker, so making the switch to low-drop shoes felt wonderfully natural: finally, a shoe that wasn't working against my natural mechanics! And I spend most of my non-running life in flat shoes or barefoot, so my calves/Achilles were already accustomed to being elongated. Still, I definitely felt my calves working harder than they had before, so I eased into it, only doing a few miles at a time initially. I happened to make the switch at the beginning of a 13.1 training cycle, which helped, and it really didn't take long - maybe a month - until I was doing all of my runs in the low-drop shoes without muscle additional fatigue. I'd say the short, early miles were the ones to get through; once I was up to around 4 miles at a time, 6 or 7 felt no different. YMMV of course so just start easing into it and go by feel.

I've never seen or heard of a Disney race running out of medals - no worries!

My wife and I did one of the 5k races. She has some mobility issues, so it took us about an hour to finish. We weren't the last ones finishing but they had run out of the medals.

I think it's both. There are supply AND demand problems, and so far they have handled all of them poorly.

Wine and Dine sold out in 35 minutes, yet Avengers has gone to the THIRD pricing tier and is still at, what, 79%? People don't want to run at Disneyland. People want to run at WDW, and ... they apparently like the appeal of a night race.

People that would normally chose a half are now going for a challenge (if offered). People are clamoring for 10Ks, because it's becoming a popular distance that is still hard to find.

Adjustments can be made to corralling to accommodate an increase in capacity - you can change the pace requirement to 15:30 and add another 5k participants. Things like that.

But it doesn't help that the sign-up process is ultimately terrible.

Did you eventually receive a medal?

All really good ideas. I would elect you president of RunDisney :) I signed up for our local 5.25 miler no problem--and if we can't do the 10k my crazy husband has voted to do the half. ahhhhh!!!

I don't know that it's necessarily that people don't want to run at DL as that they're adding too many new races at DL all at the same time. With the growing popularity of runDisney, they probably just wanted to tie it in to their newest franchises. Avengers has to be in DL for legal reasons (Universal owns the rights to those characters east of the Mississippi). My guess is that they gave Star Wars to DL because WDW has Star Wars Weekends. I just don't know that it was a great idea to create those two new race weekends in consecutive years.

I think the bigger problem is that they're taking away WDW races with no announcement of anything new. If they're going to continue to add new race weekends (which I think they should), they need to better balance them out between WDW and DL based on demands. I have no objection to them adding races at DL, as long as they also add races at WDW.

Also ... I really want to see a night race at DL. But I'm guessing the city of Anaheim wouldn't allow it.

They eventually mailed them to us. My wife was disappointed that she couldn't wear it in the park.

Dang. That really stinks, especially since it's an untimed race - AND they know the capacity of the race WELL in advance. I'm so sorry for your wife. I can only imagine how sad she felt.

3-4 years ago the only races that were selling out in an hour were at Disneyland, the races that are going in an hour at WDW now were taking weeks if not months to sell out, what has happened is real simple running Disney races has gotten very popular and Disneyland has added races while WDW has dropped races. This problem will solve itself when they finally decide to add races.

I read somewhere that they allow you to change your shirt size after getting the kit, if it doesn't fit well. Is it true?

There is a shirt exchange at the Expo,I've never had to change it but I've seen the sign.I ran the Sarasota half marathon in March and the shirts were a bit small. The exchange there was after you ran the race, the shirts were all a bright neon green which I never had a race shirt of this color,so when I went to change it the only one they had in a bigger size was like a dull green color totally unlike pretty much all the others I saw other people with.I chose to keep mine since I liked it much more, guess I need to lose 10 pounds to fit into it.
