The Right Order...

Much of this week's news was Star Wars related. Kathy mentioned watching her first SW film last week and how she unfortunately watched Episode 1.
A discussion ensued about the proper order in which to watch. Pete said 4,5,6,1,2,3. Craig said 4,5,2,3,6. That sounded interesting.

No one thought the Star Wars Holiday Special or Caravan of Courage should fit in?

Those things you listed don't exist.

Also def 456 123

Although since I grew up on the OT and know how they fit in I can watch it 1 - 6 and fully get and understand it

I just don't get what's wrong with watching them in the order 1,2,3,4,5,6? Yes there was a generation of poel who watched them in the order 4,5,6 and then 1,2 and 3 but that was the way they came out. originally the first ones were stand alone films until Gorge Lucas could come up with a story he wanted to tell to do the first ones. I know people don't like the prequels but I don't think they aren't that bad and would rather have Gorge Lucas write the new movie then a director who ruined Star Trek at the movies for fans of the series.

The constant talk of he's a fan of star wars so that means they will be good means nothing to me and I don't really care for him as Director and I Am still undecided if I will even bother with the new film series that Disney wants to put their stamp on. Personally I see this as an attempt to make up for the failure of John Carter of Mars.

When I showed the Star Wars movies to my kids, we did 451236. It seemed to work well. They are now big Star Wars fans, which is really all I wanted, so mission accomplished.

Personally, your wrong. This has nothing at all to do with John Carter of Mars.

Also people are telling you as a fans perspective which is the preferred way to watch the films I'm not understanding what you don't get?

The story in 4-6 was made with just them in mind - the prequels consistently give winks and nods to the old ones that are not there in the original trilogy.

Don't tell me my opin is wrong i can have it if I want to

I get that to I'm just saying you can decide your own order and if you want to watch in chronological order no one should judge you. The only movie series I would say skip the first one is with Star Trek the Motion picture, most star trek fans only buy it to complete the set.

Yes they do but it's like when you reread a bock series like the harry Potter books you only see them if you have red it all the way through to the end.

I too agree but these numbers could get new Star Wars Viewers confused. I think that I don't want newcomers to view them in order because I want them to see what I consider the best first. The prequels can be very confusing. I had to give a Star Wars ted Talk to my sister after Phantom Menace.

Let's list titles:
A New Hope
The Empire Strikes back
Return of the Jedi
Then
Revenge of the Sith
Attack of the Clones
I view the first one (Phantom Menace) as skipable. I do admit I enjoy Ewan McGregor as Young Obi-Wan.

Also the Cartoon series are worth checking out. Star Wars Rebels is very enjoyable and The Clone Wars the series did much to redeem that section in my eyes. Also if you can find The Muppets show with the Star Wars stars, the last 10 minutes so much irony.

I agree with Craig. If I was suggesting the films to someone who had never seen them before, I would watch them in the Machete order -

IV - A New Hope
V - The Empire Strikes Back
I - The Phantom Menace (optional to watch this)
II - Attack of the Clones
II - Revenge of the Sith
VI - Return of the Jedi

The blog I linked above explains why in great detail. I would not watch it in Episode order (1-6), mainly because episodes 1-3 ruin the absolutely *huge* revelation at the end of The Empire Strikes Back (as in, it's already known, it isn't a surprise, as it was meant to be when the original trilogy was released).

Return of the Jedi is, in the storyline, chronologically last. It is the final movie of the original trilogy.

Agreed but its the end of the trilogy and some are viewing it after the prequels. Is it also because its a nice way to end it? No spoilers. I'm not being critical just interested as to why you would view it after the prequels. I need to reread that guys article.

The blog.post I linked explains it better than I can :)

Thanks I reread it. The blogger seems concerned with maintaining the twists in the story. Unfortunately some of these twists were already exposed by popular culture. So if the person hasn't been paying attention to anything Star Wars Related or anyone who has riffed on Star Wars (Simpson, Toy Story 2, Spaceballs) then yes it workable.

Also read the Den of geeks version. And I don't agree but I think that it's not they don't make good points. It's just I like my trilogies together.

I believe that how you choose how best to view the trilogies is true from a "Certain point of view."

Perhaps you should learn to include "in my opinion" in your posts. Because a lot of us Star Trek and Star Wars fans don't think that Abrams ruined Star Trek with his movies. Some of us see them as masterful. That would be why we are excited to see what he does with the Star Wars sequels vs. what George Lucas did with the (in my opinion) far inferior prequels.

I figured that it is assumed that on a message board it is the opinion of the author being sated. Yes there are fans of both that like JJ abrams as a director I personally don't and someone being a fan of one series or another doesn't really sway me one way or another. Like for example there are people who parse Alfonso Cuarón for his direction of Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets and then there are those that think he missed most of the big details in the plot. For example if you see the movies with never reading the books then Harry never finds out who the Muraders were and how they relate to the rest of the story.

Again as I said before this new series of Star Wars films doesn't excite me the same way as the prequels did or even seeing the original Star Trek films. Heck I may even be in the minority but I like the fourth Indiana Jones movies and I really liked all of the Transformers Movies with Shi Labouef in them. To me it would be like if someone had done the Hobbit as alive action movie and tied it to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings version with out him working on it.
