Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

So there was definitely a permit filled for AOA and pop? Haha I'm with the others that can't believe that part of it.

This makes me pretty apprehensive though. I'm already on the verge of being priced out of Disney (and by that, I don't mean I can't afford it, at all I mean would I rather go to Europe or have 2-3 other trips a year or just one Disney vacation).

I really don't want the values going up much higher.

Hell, just a few years ago moderates were at $120 a night and now they're very close to $200.

A bit more on this.

1. It will stop at DHS, CBR, Pop/AoA, and Epcot.

2. The gondolas themselves will be generic themed but each station will be themed to their area.

3. Set to be complete by the time SWL opens.

4. About 3.5 minutes from Epcot to CBR, 2.5 minutes from CBR to DHS.

This all sounds very reasonable to me.

This is the system they are supposedly going for.

That's a cable car /tram system - when I saw this, I thought that it COULD explain how they would handle ECV/wheelchairs without slowing things down, but the design just doesn't look like it would be cable cars. The tight turns at Boardwalk would eliminate that.

CBR will have a dual station. AoA/Pop will have one station to service both resorts. Of course we will likely see a price increase. There is a rumor that Disney wants to get rid of the value, moderate, and deluxe terms to go for a pay based on location model. That would put these two resorts in a different category than say the All-stars which you could consider what you called a value+.

Don't give them any ideas Phil! ;)

That is certainly what they are thinking. Crappy CBR can charge a 25% premium because of access. And people will pay. I've said it all along, access is the king. That may be why they are talking about.

We may also have struck what one of the D23 big announcements are. (I also could foresee the success of this leading to a second cableway connecting DAK, AKL, Coronado, Blizzard Beach and maybe even to DHS. )

Could this system help spread people around the parks as well? If I'm staying at one of the connected resorts, this system may make it a lot easier and much more attractive to hit up one of these two parks than to try to navigate my way to the others.

Pop was the only value we would stay at, and I would only stay if it was under $120 (for example, going off site next visit because of the price). They are just going to drive people off site. Pop is slammed with people, and doesn't have nearly enough staff to control it. I can't imagine people paying $200-$225 for that place. Maybe I'm wrong, but boy....

I think the big wins are that it's a faster connection from Epcot to DHS than the boats. It's faster than walking on the path. That is already a very heavily utilized travel corridor.
As a bonus, you connect two/three more resorts into that corridor. You have greater attendance anticipated at a park that had trouble dealing with the numbers it had prior to expansion. So this helps encourage non car transportation. This encourage greater resort traffic to shopping district at the boardwalk.

I don't want generic theming. Put classic characters on them, so that one ride you're in the Donald gondola and the ride back you're in Pluto. I know one thing my wife and I always do is try to guess which character will be on our TSMM car. I prefer not playing in Little Bo Peep (she always wins in that one).

No, the AOA to Pop is still speculation since nothing in the permits show a station building there, but there are thing in the CBR permit that indicate that it might be happening. We have also not seen a permit for the Epcot end yet and that's even more certain to be happening. So either these are going to be built in locations that do not require water management district approval, or they are going to be shown in additional permits.

Pure speculation:
A gondola system that uses the technology being developed for regional transportation, making it unlike anything seen before. Use your magic band to board, and go directly to the park of choice like an elevator passes floors. Look at some of the projects on the following page:
http://faculty.washington.edu/jbs/itrans/whatsnew.htm
There is a lot of work underway for a gondola system that can bypass stations. Being able to board at AoA and deplane at Epcot as the first and only stop would be cool. Use of the Magic Band to cue the destination menu and make each small pod unique to the individuals. Only requirement is to open the wheelbarrows of cash to Imagineering! If they can design the Magic Band system, they can design a pod system too.

Agreed. I can't see them NOT using each pod/car as a uniquely themed character or movie.

Okay so this system is probably what they will go for looking at the numbers. Their top speed is 20MPH and they can hold 35 people per car. There would be multiple cars on the line (more than two) and it is continuously moving. Doppelmayr also claim this is the best for long rope spans (less towers = less money) and the best for extreme weather conditions.

This system can transport up to 5000 people per hour and can also make those tight turns in the permits. These could even hold a couple ECVs.

Thought I'd share this in this thread since not everyone reads the other thread - I actually (jokingly) called the gondola system on January 26th in the DVC - CBR thread...not spot on, but not as wild as it seemed at the time.

Hey I just thought of a solution.

New DVC resort themed to Brazil/Rio/Carnivale, then add Brazil in WS. Then you just run a gondola from the top of the resort down into the park.

Park access - SOLVED
Seeing resort from inside park - SOLVED

(BTW - I am just joking - please don't anybody devote any time to tearing apart my silly idea.)

Interesting video about the development & feasibility of "urban cable" by the company that developed some of the South American systems:

Actually, I would quite like to see jet black cars with "Walt Disney World" in white on the side. It would look really sleek and cool IMO.
