Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

Great report! Really brings back memories of our SeaWorld trip from years ago. This was our only "character" photo:

I love the dolphin photo. I think we may have one with Shamu from YEARS ago...the kids' first SeaWorld trip...when I was pregnant with #3 kid...in February 2004. Yep...sure do:

Wow...yeah fun memories. Hoping we get in a visit to SeaWorld for this upcoming trip and definitely hope to enjoy those coasters. We've done Manta (the adults) but not the kids yet!

This SeaWorld day is perfect so far! We haven't been to SeaWorld in years, and I'm not sure why. We always say it is so relaxing after a day at the other theme parks...I think we will have to plan a day there on our next non-Disney vacation when we rent a car!

I especially love the dolphin character photo -- the only one I've ever seen out is Shamu so that is a point of pride meet for you!

I am enjoying this so much! We cannot wait for our June week at Marriott Cypress Harbour. The goal is family time and relaxation, but you've inspired us to try to rope drop sea world at least once. With a little guy who's till naps, we will probably eat lunch back at the resort, but I'd love to have some of those crowds!!

We swear by rope drop at SeaWorld....those first two hours have always been worth the effort, especially during busy times (even on Christmas Day it was amazing before 11 am). I would much rather arrive early and leave early than arrive later and leave at close.

The photos are great :thumbsup2

Just a quick question, were any of the Christmas packages in the sale or should I just watch out for them coming onto the SW site?

I don't recall them being part of the BF sale last year, but something tells me they were included in previous year's sales. I would hold off on buying them until the Blue Friday offers are released, just in case.

Great report and pictures as always Gina, but I have a quick question. I notice your boys flash a lot of gang signs in their photos. Is there some sort of Canadian Crips and Bloods thing going on up there in the Great White North? Should we be worried down here? o_O

Gang connections? LOL, no.....but thanks for the giggle. We are completely harmless, I assure you :rotfl:.

Love the pictures! :thumbsup2

We are looking forward to the Sea World portion of our upcoming trip. We're going to get good use out of our Sea World/Aquatica APs! ::yes::

Our SeaWorld/AQ APs have been some of the best-value Orlando purchases we have ever made. We haven't regretted them for a minute!! I hope you enjoy yours as much as we have enjoyed ours :goodvibes.

There are definitely not as many character ops at SeaWorld as at the Universal and Disney parks, but I'm glad there are at least a couple. We saw Shamu on both of our SW days this trip, but didn't stop for pics with him until the second day. I am sure, at Christmas time, we also saw some character bears greeting guests......I hope someone can confirm that so I know I'm not crazy!

We love the pace of SeaWorld....so relaxing, so go-with-the-flow, so unscheduled. They day we need a minute-by-minute touring plan there is the day I give us my AP's :rotfl2:.

I was so excited to see the dolphin.....I am sure poor Jake sometimes must wonder if his mother has lost her mind . It's the little things that mean so much!

Monday, April 25th: SeaWorld, continued

After Shark Encounter, we decided it was time for a ride on the Sky Tower. This attraction was closed on our Christmas Day visit as it had suffered from some technical difficulties a few days prior which caused the ride to stop when in the air. When that occurred, guests were stranded for two hours, 200 feet up, before the capsule was able to be returned to the terminal. On our visit before that (August 2014), the capsule was encased in a special wrap in celebration of the park’s 50th anniversary, which made the view from many seats garbled and less than photo-worthy. Now that the wrap was removed and the technical issued remedied, we were ready for a spin on the tallest observation tower in Orlando :).

There was literally no one in line as we approached the queue, and the only wait we encountered was for the ride in currently process to conclude before we boarded. Not purchasing quick queue was definitely a good suggestion ::yes::……it wasn’t needed today whatsoever.

There is a photo location at the entrance to the ride which we have never seen staffed before today. We stopped and had our picture taken and added to our Photokey.

The doors opened and we were ushered inside. We took our seats in the lovely air conditioned pod and we began our ascent.

I love the views from up here….you can see every single part of the park as the capsule slowly rotates around.

While we knew it was quiet that day, we were kind of shocked to see how empty the parking lot was!! No wonder there were no lines to speak of.

One quick photo as we exited to the Waterfront…..for some reason, this picture just speaks to me. I may have to use it as the screensaver on my laptop.

I was just about to ask the guys where they wanted to head next, but I didn’t even get the words out of my mouth when they informed me that the next thing we did was going to be all for me: they had appreciated my patience and good humour as they indulged in their coaster love for the early part of the day, and they wanted to reward me with the thing I was looking forward to most at SeaWorld this trip: the Pearl Dive :woohoo:.

Picking a pearl and having it placed in a special setting has been on my Orlando to-do list since the very beginning. Despite the encouragement from Steve to experience it on our previous trips, I never allowed myself the splurge (it seemed so indulgent….I always thought those resources should be directed toward something we could all enjoy together). This time, though, he was not taking no for an answer: he informed me long before we left on this vacation that this was what he wanted to do for me for our anniversary (which we would celebrate during the latter part of this trip….23 years!). I couldn’t say no. So onward we went to the pearl dive tank.

We checked in with the hostess at the top of the stairs, who advised us that the pearl diver would be returning momentarily to help guests obtain their perfect oyster. We strolled down to the bottom of the tank to await her arrival. The floor was littered with multiple oysters and a host of sunken treasures :fish:.

Within a few moments, down she came!

She happily gave the small gathering a photo-worthy pose:

The bubbly and energetic hostess, who wore a microphone and a large floppy hat, invited anyone who wished to take part in the pearl dive to make their way to the bridge at the top of the tank. The diver would swim up, chat with them for a moment, and bring up a selection of oysters from the sandy tank floor from which we could pick. Choosing an oyster, she reminded everyone, was $16.95 plus tax….but you were guaranteed a pearl.

Despite their insistence, I truly didn’t want this to just be “my” thing….I wanted the boys to be involved, too. So I encouraged them to join me for the oyster selection and all three of us made our way to the bridge.

We had a delightful little get-to-know-you chat with the diver (ever notice how many times you're asked "where are you from?" while on vacation in Orlando?), who then disappeared on a quest for the most awesomest of oysters! :woohoo:

This little duck flew in and kept us entertained while she was gone .

She brought up two big handfuls of oysters of various sizes, colours and hairy-ness. She instructed us to pick out the oyster we liked best, put it into one of the small glass bowls, and take it to the hostess at the podium (who I could hear, on the microphone, was excitedly awaiting our arrival back at her little kiosk).

Steve and Jake encouraged me to do the oyster picking honours, but I explained to them that it would make the whole thing more special if they made the final selection…..I would pick the setting, of course, but I wanted the choice of the oyster....and the eventual pearl....to be their contribution to such a cherished gift. It would give it so much more meaning for me, and they understood those feelings….so they dutifully got down on their knees to evaluate the ugliness of each individual shell. When they finally decided on just the right one, we plopped it in the bowl and made our way to the Pearl Dive hostess station.

I have to say, this is quite an entertaining production. The hostess was super fun, high-energy, and really made the experience a memorable moment and a BIG DEAL. She excitedly encouraged other guests to gather round to witness the ceremonial opening of the oyster, and a surprising number of people all formed a semi-circle around us to watch her animated show.

She handed us a wand which she explained was essential to the ceremony. She asked one of us to come forward to say the magic words and wave the wand above the oyster before it was opened. Jake took a pass on the opportunity, but Steve was quick to accept the task.

Then began the big reveal:

As she pried open the shell, we were assured that no oysters were harmed as a result of the pearl dive experience: the oysters, she explained, were already dead :crazy2:. I am not sure if that made me feel better or worse? :rotfl2:

Finally, our treasure was unveiled! A beautiful 7mm white pearl :worship:. The pearl colour and size were both excitedly announced to the crowd and the hostess led everyone in a big cheer :cheer2:.

We took the pearl into the adjacent jewellery shop where they provided us with the options for settings. For those that didn’t want the pearl placed in earrings, a necklace or a ring, they had other lovely non-jewellery options such as a tiny box in the shape of Shamu. So cute. I had already known, before we visited, that I wanted to have the pearl set in a ring, so the decision was quite easy to make as that only left me with two options (note to readers…..SeaWorld’s shop doesn’t offer nearly the vast amount of settings as the Disney and Universal pick-a-pearl locations, if that’s important to anyone). I made my selection, was fitted for the correct ring size, then proceeded to the cash to pay for both the oyster selection and setting costs while the jeweler went to work.

SeaWorld had this special offer for pass members currently which we happily took advantage of:

https://seaworldparks.com/en/seaworld-orlando/passmembers/exclusives-and-events#promo2

The normal pass member merchandise discount was 10%, so this increased our savings by an additional 15%......which would be substantial on this larger purchase. It made the Shoppers Card a smart buy, and we could still use it on all other gifts and souvenirs throughout the balance of our vacation…so the savings would continue to add up. They applied the 25% discount to both the oyster purchase and the setting, bringing the total cost of the entire experience to a very reasonable $82.55 ($9.95, no tax, for the Shoppers Card and $72.60 for the pearl, setting and tax).

And this was the finished product:

13124509_10154675568131416_8529550157913650908_n.jpg

The jeweler advised me that I shouldn't wear my beloved treasure for at least 5 hours, to give the setting time to dry and hold. They put the ring in a little mesh bag, which I tucked safely into a small padded pouch in my camera bag....that seemed the most cushion-y place to store it while we finished out the balance of our day at the park.

I think this was turning out to be one of my favourite SeaWorld days, ever :cloud9:. And there was still so much more to go.

The sky tower rides always scare me...especially when people get stuck on them for hours...ughhhh....

The pearl ring looks great...looks like you guys had a fun day!!

I love the ring! It will be such a great reminder of all your trips to SW!

I was wondering why I didn't see any hot sauce or horseradish with the oyster opening ceremony, but if they are already dead, that explains it!

The ceremony seems like great fun, and the setting you chose is gorgeous! Pearl is my birthstone so I have a small collection :rose: Now I know something I definitely want to do at Sea World!

Maria :upsidedow

Love the ring! We haven't been to Seaworld yet (though we went to Discovery Cove) we cut it out of our last trip when I got a cold on vacation. But I have a feeling sometime in the next year or so we'll make it there :D

Nice ring. So happy as it a special reminder for you.
We have several pearls, all from Disney locations, and DD keeps the 2 or 3, I can't remember, in cages. We brought a necklace from home to hang the cages on. She got a gray/blue pearl the last time we went. I don't remember the size, but it barely fit in the cage she selected.

I am not fond of heights, but I really like going up in the tower, and am glad to see it is in service again. I would have not liked to have been stuck up there for hours though.

Thanks for checking that out :thumbsup2. I will be interested to know if its back up and running.

No problem! I know it was closed last month when they were doing all the queue work (to add the non-rider line, to go to the exhibit), but I had thought that was done. So now I'm curious what is going on

Your ring is so beautiful. It looks like it is in a flower. :flower1: Does it come with any kind of warranty? I would worry that the pearl would pop out of the ring setting.

People get stuck on that for hours? You are braver for going on that than any coaster IMO. The ring looks great!

We feel your pain. Our poor Blue Jays have been annihilated the last two nights. Oy vey :sad2:.
Don't bring it up. I had to watch live and in person. It was painful.

The whole suspension thing is rather interesting. Pretty much appropriate in my eyes. However, all the unwritten rules on this stuff is very old school and the younger generation of players aren't interested. They just want to play.

I wonder how we would feel about the bat flip if we were Texas fans?

So pretty! I remember picking a pearl when we went to Disney in 2001. My Grandma bought us each two :). So fun! We only had one set.

The Sky Tower is as old as me (well, just a shade older.....it has me beat by 9 months) and has only stranded guests once, so that's a pretty good track record. I think Steve and Jake would rather be stuck in the Sky Tower than upside down on Forbidden Journey.....that's what happened the first time they rode it in 2012 :scared:.

I love the ring! It will be such a great reminder of all your trips to SW!

I was wondering why I didn't see any hot sauce or horseradish with the oyster opening ceremony, but if they are already dead, that explains it!

Yep, it was easily my favourite souvenir this trip. I jokingly told Steve I had so much fun and love the ring so much, I think we should make this something we do on EVERY vacation. He promptly fainted :faint: (just kidding!).

This may be a silly question, but I'm not up on my oyster knowledge: what does the hot sauce and horseradish do?

The ceremony seems like great fun, and the setting you chose is gorgeous! Pearl is my birthstone so I have a small collection :rose: Now I know something I definitely want to do at Sea World!

Maria :upsidedow

Lucky you! My birthstone is topaz :crazy2: ... so I rarely like to wear it. If your stone is pearl, that means you have a birthday coming up soon! :cake:

You'll love it.....its an awesome park!

The only thing I wish was different about the ring is the fact that its silver....I really had hoped they'd have a gold plated setting. Both ring settings came in silver only, so it unfortunately I didn't have the option for gold. I do love the flower, though.....and surprisingly it doesn't seem to catch on anything. It sits up quite high so I was a little bit worried about that.

Aw, what a pretty ring, and so special :goodvibes

Thank you :goodvibes . The whole experience was just so much fun!

Nice ring. So happy as it a special reminder for you.

Yup, I hate heights too, but that fully enclosed revolving room doesn't bother me a bit. Now if the windows were open versus sealed....that would be a totally different story.......

Ahhh! The Oyster's Secret hostess is my friend!! I always love visiting her whenever she is there

She was AWESOME.....truly ::yes::. So fun and enthusiastic! SeaWorld couldn't have picked a more perfect individual to fill that role.
Your ring is so beautiful. It looks like it is in a flower. :flower1: Does it come with any kind of warranty? I would worry that the pearl would pop out of the ring setting.

I don't think there was any warranty on the jewelery (offered or implied). So far, it seems pretty well made though.....but I'll kick myself if it falls apart now that I've endorsed the quality of the construction, LOL!

People get stuck on that for hours? You are braver for going on that than any coaster IMO. The ring looks great!

Not regularly, just once (right before Christmas). It was quite a big to-do in the news, so I'm sure they have made VERY certain that problem won't happen again. SeaWorld doesn't need any more bad press than they already get!!

If it makes you feel any better, Jake was there with a friend the night before you were (when they lost 12-1). I almost choked when I checked the score and it was 11-0 in the 4th inning :guilty:.

Maybe I'm weird, but I just don't see the logic of a fist fight on a baseball field.....or the basketball court.....or wherever. If someone ticks you off (be it a bat flip, or someone taking practice shots during your national anthem :rolleyes1) address it by amping up your game, not with a punch to the face. Issues aren't....or shouldn't be....solved that way in my world. In the end, what did that accomplish? I don't think anyone came out looking good from that whole mess. But what do I know, I'm just a Mom and I can't help but expect everyone (especially grown men) to have a little class. And yep, that goes for the players on "our" teams as much as the competition.

What a lovely and enjoyable memory for you which the ring will always remind you of :goodvibes

Thank you!! I do love it! :cloud9:

So pretty! I remember picking a pearl when we went to Disney in 2001. My Grandma bought us each two :). So fun! We only had one set.

On future visits, I might just pick a pearl again and not have it set, either. Those little Shamu pearl cases were stinking adorable....and would make a nice little addition to my cache of Florida treasures. Cheaper than a ring, too ;).

Oh, dear....don't rush things :rotfl:. He's just 20 and hopefully has at least 5 years before he decides to settle down. I'm not at the marriage-arranging desperation just yet .... and anyway, @dancin Disney style has agreed to negotiate when its time for him to tie the knot. She has two beautiful young ladies who will need a respectable suitor and a 5 star shed in the back yard :teeth:.

What a GREAT deal on a destination wedding, though. I am seriously going to keep that in the back of my mind for when Jake's time comes!!

I'm all in for a destination wedding and as the mother of the bride I like and can afford the 5K price tag.
