"Does this ride have drops?" March 2015 TR *NEW* 1/17 COMPLETE - Final Thoughts

Oh Sleeping Beauty castle. I'm with ya, who cares if it's smaller? It's still absolutely gorgeous. And PINK. :)

Dang, Peter Pan's flight was closed back in March too? That was a looong refurb because I'm pretty sure it only opened back up like a week or two ago. Sad.

Sounds like y'all got a lot done in Fantasyland so far!

It's too bad Paxton didn't feel like meeting characters that morning. Did it actually last throughout the whole trip?

Bright and early start for your first day in the parks!

I can understand how letting DS be the leader could backfire! That kind of power can go to your head! :rotfl:

I'm sorry DS wasn't into the characters this trip! That must have been hard because the interactions can be so fun!

Excited to read more about your day!

Isn't it funny how kids will do things one time but not the next? Such fun little individuals! I agree the CM should be more familiar before giving advice about rides or such. You would think that they would know? I'm really enjoying your trip report and it's getting me really excited for our trip.

The character thing was really disappointing, but we didn't push it. I'm hoping he will be over whatever was making him nervous or disinterested in meeting characters, because those are some of our best memories of previous trips!

It seemed really odd to me that the CM wouldn't know what was on the list of things that were closed!! At least I helped one family who might have been hurrying there on that CM's advice.

Thanks! Glad you're enjoying.

Gorgeous photos!!!

Yikes, glad you were there to set him straight before he told even more guests.

Duly noted. ::yes::

Aw, what a bummer! I hope he comes around by next trip. Izzy loved the characters her first trip, was pretty character-shy/scared the second trip, then loved them again for the rest - so hopefully it was just an off trip like that for him. :goodvibes

Can't wait to hear more about Disneyland!

Thanks! I loved how those came out too. It's such a beautiful view.

I know, right?! Seems like they would be up on those kinds of things since people are depending on them for info!

I really hope he is over the character thing by next trip. We did eventually get him to meet a few, but nothing like what we have been used to on past Disney trips. I'm wondering if having an autograph book would make it more fun for him, but then I'm worried about spending the time and money on one and then he still doesn't want to meet them!

I am a little late to the party but I am here. I hope to get to Disneyland one day but every time I look into it those flight prices just get in the way! Those legos! I have lots of those around know a days. Someone really wants to go back to legoland too! Oh my goodness I have to agree with your DH on those hot and ready five dollar pizzas. Devyn and I just had one yesterday!

Love those AM pictures as I do all your DH pictures. While I have never seen the castle in person. It is just as beautiful as Cinderella's!
:rotfl: That cast-member had good intentions I suppose but yeah! :confused3

OH the Casey Jr train is adorable Devyn would love that. Did you know the train will be down for refurbishment at MK while we are there. I am so bummed and I know the little one will be!

I cannot get over how much our boys have alike. Last September it was not easy getting Devyn to meet the characters. Usually he is all for it but he had specific ones he wanted to meet. Maybe it is just a phase!

Oh, you're not late at all!! Welcome!

DS is really into Legos now too. He got a Spiderman Lego Jr. set for Easter that he just LOVES. We used to get the Hot 'n Ready pizzas waaaaay too often. lol It is just sooooo convenient & cheap!

I just love Sleeping Beauty Castle, it's so adorable! And it was looking particularly beautiful that morning on our first day and knowing we had several days ahead of us to enjoy the parks.

The Casey Jr. train got a LOT of love from us on this trip, as did the DL railroad. I guess it's a good thing we did that so many times, because I didn't know it was going to be down in October! What a bummer! :(

I really hope it's just a phase! I LOVE meeting the characters with him!

Oh no - bummer on the characters! I am surprised at his age that he was like that (I don't know if I've heard of kids growing OUT of the characters, at least not until later when they are "too cool" for them). Still sounds like a nice morning though and you visited quite a few attractions quickly - I love how you had to tell the CM about Peter Pan - ugh! Too bad he wasn't right and it was actually open!

I KNOW! He is totally doing the opposite of every other kid on the planet, I think. lol I think an autograph book would get him back interested in meeting them, but I hate to spend the time and money on one if I am wrong.

I was so hoping something crazy had happened and it was actually open like he said. That was one of the closed attractions we were really bummed about.

Tough on the characters. Our DD went through a similar phase. She will never tell her what causes her to be afraid of things, but from what I could figure they were intimidating to her in that she didn't know how to or got nervous to talk to them. Hopefully your DS will come around again. Now our DD is mostly "No thanks" with the characters because, well, she's 12, but she still wants to meet Mickey!!

I would NEVER let my kid have more than a limited say in ride order. Now she is old enough to understand why we do things in the order we do them, but even when she was younger we would usually say we will come back to that. For instance I asked her what she wants to do first thing at the MK, she said the Tiki Birds. A girl after my own heart, I explained that we have to do the rides with long lines first, then the easy things to get into. She was cool with it once I explained. (The benefits of tweens - and there aren't many of them.) :rotfl2:

Sometimes it was like he was afraid, but other times he just refused because he didn't want to. It was weird. I'm really hoping he comes around on our next trip, because the few times we did get him to meet one, he loved it.

Yeah, it was a bit of a parenting fail. We have done it before, usually on his birthday, and I guess at the time he was too young to understand what kind of power we were giving him. Definitely not this time so, lesson learned!

Going to bed early the night before seemed to pay off! Love all the early morning photos. Ah I'm sorry about the characters :( But sounds like you had a fun morning so far! :)

It definitely paid off, and made it a lot easier to get up early the next day for an early park opening.

Looks like a good start to the morning. You went with the cage car for Casey's ride...I felt clausterphobic in that car but my son liked it too.

DS loved riding in the cage cars, but he REALLY wanted to sit up in that engine car! lol It didn't bother me at all except that it interfered with the view. But we definitely rode it enough times in different cars that it didn't matter anyway lol

Sad.

It's too bad Paxton didn't feel like meeting characters that morning. Did it actually last throughout the whole trip?

I truly love each and every park Castle that I have seen so far. And I love that each one is unique.

It was a REALLY long refurb! So many things were closed while we were there but Peter Pan and WoC were the two worst things to miss out on.

We did manage to convince him to meet a few over the week, but not nearly as many as usual. And there were a few we just couldn't convince him to meet, and it wasn't worth the hassle or risk of a meltdown.

It was so perfect that our earliest night to bed fell before an early park opening so we could make the most of our time!

Oh it absolutely went to his head. We have done it in the past when we are there on his birthday and let him kind of guide us for the day. But I think the difference is that back then, he didn't really know that he was in charge, whereas this time he definitely did!

It was tough, because I LOVE doing character meets with him. And character meets in Disneyland are so fun because they are still just kind of random and you see them wandering around or hanging out with CM's by the rides instead of organized meets with lines like WDW. We could have met SO MANY.

Day 2 Continued: Sunday March 1st

Since it's the 60th Anniversary of Disneyland, I figured I should post an update!!

Before I jump back to where I left off heading across the park, I got a few pictures from DH off his phone of their ride around the track on Autopia.

Once DH came back to meet us, we crossed the park through the hub to Adventureland. My favorite!

However, because of our terrible plan of letting DS hold the reins, he staunchly refused our suggestions of seeing the Tiki Room or riding Pirates or Jungle Cruise. I cringe even reading that. Big parenting fail! So we left Aventureland and went back to Fantasyland because he had expressed an interest in riding Dumbo. Since we came from a different direction, we happened upon Fantasy Faire, which was new since DH and I had last been there for our anniversary a couple years ago. It had a place to meet the princesses, and also a small theater where they did a show reenacting Frozen. We didn’t end up doing either one, but the outside area was nice. I spotted my favorite tower!

We got in line for Dumbo and decided that instead of all three of us cramming in 1 elephant, DH would get in the one on front of DS and I to take pictures. It all would have worked out perfectly if some little girl had not hidden in the elephant in front of the one DS chose to sneak onto a second ride without having to wait in line! So DH had to choose one a couple more away from us, but he was still able to get some photos.

As we came off of the ride, DS noticed the stationary Dumbo and wanted to take his photo in it. This was the first of many times we stopped for this photo op over the course of 5 days in the park.

I suggested riding Alice in Wonderland next since we were right there and the line was fairly short, but I was again vetoed by the little dictator. He wanted to ride the Monorail instead, so we cut through to Tomorrowland to board there.

Monorail Selfie!

While it is a nice, relaxing ride, and it is cool that you can actually get on and off inside of the theme park, other than that the Monorail is pretty useless unless you are going from DL to DTD. Which we weren’t. So we just took the round trip, and DS enjoyed it greatly because as I said before, he loves all things Disney transportation!

When we got off of the Monorail, DH and I decided we were ready to head over to DCA so DS could finally see Cars Land! On his first trip, he was only 19 months old, and Cars Land was under construction to open later that year. Because we had Premier APs for that year, when it came time to decide on where to go for our anniversary, it was between WDW and DL. DH and I ultimately decided on DL, which meant we got to experience Cars Land and Buena Vista Street, which were brand new still. Right around that time, DS was becoming OBSESSED with Lightning McQueen and all things Cars, so it was a little bittersweet seeing all of that without him and knowing how much he would love it. So when it came time to decide where to vacation earlier this year, Cars Land played a heavy hand in us choosing to go back to DL now instead of waiting until he was a little older. DH and I wanted to take him while he still had a love of Cars.

As we walked out of DL, we spotted a princess from our neck of the woods, Tiana!

I can never say it enough, park hopping at DL is a breeze compared to WDW! And so much more convenient with little kids in strollers.

Gosh, he looks so grown up, just driving along, like he does it every day. :drive:

I love all the creative scenery! How cool!

It all would have worked out perfectly if some little girl had not hidden in the elephant in front of the one DS chose to sneak onto a second ride without having to wait in line!
 Wow, I'm surprised she got away with that!

Hmmm, or did she? Maybe she's hiding again? :confused3

I suggested riding Alice in Wonderland next since we were right there and the line was fairly short, but I was again vetoed by the little dictator.
:headache: Yep, definitely making a note that I will not let Izzy call the shots in a Disney park. As it is, she's trying to be the boss of everything right now. :sad2:

DH and I wanted to take him while he still had a love of Cars.
Glad you were able to do so and looking forward to hearing what he thinks. Izzy LOVES Cars right now too - the last thing she did before bed tonight was play with Lightning McQueen and Mater. :car: (Well, actually, she introduced them to Mickey!)

Reading this report makes me miss Disneyland so much more! Cars Land wasn't around when I was there and I can't wait to go back and see it. Can't wait to see how much your DS likes the rest of Cars Land!

Once again, really enjoying your TR! Anxious to hear how your DS reacted to Cars Land. Hope you were able to go there after dark - the lights are so cool.

I love Adventureland in DL too. Something about it seems just a little more exotic... if that makes sense? Hahah.

Dumbo is always a good choice!

OH CARS LAND.

I'm sorry you didn't get to enjoy Adventureland! But I'm glad DS had his day in the sun being the boss! :rotfl:

Fun classics in Fantasyland - Dumbo and the Tea Party!

It seems like DS is just bursting to get to Cars Land! Excited to read about it!

Our first family trip, Cars Land had not opened yet and we couldn't wait to go back to experience it. It's done so phenomenally well! And perfect for my little Cars loving kiddo.

Once again, really enjoying your TR! Anxious to hear how your DS reacted to Cars Land. Hope you were able to go there after dark - the lights are so cool.

Glad to hear you are enjoying! With 5 days in the parks, we spent a LOT of time in Cars Land!

OH CARS LAND.

It definitely makes sense. I think without that huge Aladdin Magic Carpet ride it makes the DL version a lot more close knit and tropical feeling.

Cars Land is so amazing! It's crazy to think how much detail they were able to pack in there.

We didn't spend time there just yet, but with five days in DL, he couldn't avoid it forever! lol He got his day in the spotlight, but then he learned over the next few days that we were ALL there to have fun, not just him!

I love Fantasyland in DL. Something about it just feels so nostalgic even though I didn't grow up going there.

Ah, I'm sorry DS vetoed the decision to hang out in Adventureland! I love the pics of you two on Dumbo, so cute!

Great pics of the 3 of you in Cars Land, I cannot wait to hear how DS liked it!!

I love Adventureland! So pretty. I actually chose to ride the speedway once I was alone with Aria in WDW, but braced myself for anything that might happen though nothing did thankfully. It's all personal choices and glad you sat out what you didn't feel like you should ride :)

Paxton sure was enjoying his day as "little dictator" lol! That is interesting about a girl hiding in Dumbo! I don't think I've ever seen that happen before!

Love that you made it over to Cars Land, I bet Paxton was in heaven!! Aria would love RSR, I can't wait to get back to DL (just waiting for her to hit Indiana Jones ride height lol).

I love the characters just walking around at Disneyland...so much better than at the World. That friend of Tianna was so great when we were there a couple of years ago...I hope we see her next month!

so I have no idea how I missed this starting ... I guess checking the DISboards 5 times a day is not sufficient to catching everything!

That's great that you got a good flight out of your smaller local airport and that the times worked even better for you. Glad you switched to a bigger plane - that would have been a long flight on that tiny one!

haha, that is pretty funny about the directions and remember the Jack-in-the-box. That sounds like something my wife would do (she seems to remember everything when it comes to directions) and then be annoyed at me for not remembering that

Gotta love the Lego store (though it always bugs me/confuses me why some of the characters are done up in legos to look like themselves, but then some are done up to look like the lego person version of themselves ... like, in your photos, compare how Woody looks to how Belle looks)

BTW - I assume it isn't an issue to exchange the vouchers before you want to use them right? We are hoping to do that the evening before our first park day as well

Pizza! Pizza! ... glad the travel day was fairly low on the stress level - always helps to set up the trip on a positive note like that!

I love the picture of your son in his stroller with the park map out just planning his day and preparing himself mentally.

I am definitely interested to see how I feel about Sleeping Beauty Castle when I see it in person for the first time. One thing I took away from your picture is that it really makes it seem like there is another "land" at the end of main street but that it is in the distance, beyond Main St that you will get to eventually when you want - where as Cinderella Castle in Magic Kingdom has such a presence and towers over Main St. it really draws you in and pulls your through Main St as if that is just the corridor to get to the Castle. (I swear it makes sense in my head what I am trying to say :rotfl2:)

Wow, thank goodness you were there to alert them to the fact that PP was down. You definitely think they the CM that is planning to give the advice to head to PP would be aware that said destination is closed. :confused3

That's some really good advice about giving the kid(s) too much control right at the beginning. I will have to keep that in mind. Maybe have more of a consensus/targeted approach at the beginning and then if time at the end of the trip leave it wide open for them

Definitely going to hit up Casey Jr. Random question but would you suggest doing that first or the Canal Boats first since they kinda cover some of the same area? Or does it totally not matter?

Bummer that he wasn't in to the characters!

I love all the little touches on the Autopia ride ... looks a lot nicer than the speedway at WDW

That stinks about the girl sneaking a second ride on Dumbo - but may have worked out for the best as you got some great pictures, especially this one:

I have mixed feelings about Cars Land for our upcoming trip as I know my son will love it but he is such a shorty there is no way he will be tall enough to ride RSR!

Ah, I'm sorry DS vetoed the decision to hang out in Adventureland! I love the pics of you two on Dumbo, so cute!

Great pics of the 3 of you in Cars Land, I cannot wait to hear how DS liked it!!

Luckily, he wouldn't get away with it for long, and we did get to spend some quality time in Adventureland later on!

Thanks!

I love Adventureland! So pretty. I actually chose to ride the speedway once I was alone with Aria in WDW, but braced myself for anything that might happen though nothing did thankfully. It's all personal choices and glad you sat out what you didn't feel like you should ride :)

Love that you made it over to Cars Land, I bet Paxton was in heaven!! Aria would love RSR, I can't wait to get back to DL (just waiting for her to hit Indiana Jones ride height lol).

I actually didn't mind sitting out on Autopia. Definitely not on my list of favorite attractions! Of course it would be cute to see DS driving, but I can always do that with him in WDW later on.

He absolutely did! But we also learned our lesson about giving him so much control so early in the trip. lol

RSR is truly an amazing ride, even more so when you're a big fan of Cars!

I love the characters just walking around at Disneyland...so much better than at the World. That friend of Tianna was so great when we were there a couple of years ago...I hope we see her next month!

I think that is just one more thing that adds to the charm of Disneyland. And most of the characters we saw roaming around didn't have any kind of handler anywhere around, so it was really just like seeing them walking around in their natural environment.

so I have no idea how I missed this starting ... I guess checking the DISboards 5 times a day is not sufficient to catching everything!

No worries, you haven't missed much!

haha, that is pretty funny about the directions and remember the Jack-in-the-box. That sounds like something my wife would do (she seems to remember everything when it comes to directions) and then be annoyed at me for not remembering that

At this point, everything kind of revolves around food anyway. lol So I don't think DH was really surprised I remembered where Jack in the Box was!!

Gotta love the Lego store (though it always bugs me/confuses me why some of the characters are done up in legos to look like themselves, but then some are done up to look like the lego person version of themselves ... like, in your photos, compare how Woody looks to how Belle looks)

That's so true, and I never noticed that! I definitely like the ones that look like the characters instead of the Lego version better.

BTW - I assume it isn't an issue to exchange the vouchers before you want to use them right? We are hoping to do that the evening before our first park day as well

I just asked DH, and he said it was a piece of cake to exchange them!

I love the picture of your son in his stroller with the park map out just planning his day and preparing himself mentally.

He is sooooo crazy about maps right now, especially park maps! He loves just looking at them and plotting his way around.

Wow, thank goodness you were there to alert them to the fact that PP was down. You definitely think they the CM that is planning to give the advice to head to PP would be aware that said destination is closed. :confused3

Right?! I thought that was more than a little odd!!

That's some really good advice about giving the kid(s) too much control right at the beginning. I will have to keep that in mind. Maybe have more of a consensus/targeted approach at the beginning and then if time at the end of the trip leave it wide open for them

That is decidedly a MUCH better plan, and absolutely what we will do from now on. I think it worked fine in previous trips because he didn't really understand that we were doing what he wanted to do and that he was making he decisions. This time he absolutely knew what kind of power he had been given and didn't hesitate to use it! Next time, we will save it for the last day when it doesn't really matter what we do because we have hopefully hit all of our must-dos earlier in the trip.

Definitely going to hit up Casey Jr. Random question but would you suggest doing that first or the Canal Boats first since they kinda cover some of the same area? Or does it totally not matter?

They do cover some of the same area, but the train has no narration. If you have one day to do both, I would say the Canal Boats first. It's a slow loader so the queue builds up quite a bit faster.

That stinks about the girl sneaking a second ride on Dumbo - but may have worked out for the best as you got some great pictures, especially this one:

Thanks!

I have mixed feelings about Cars Land for our upcoming trip as I know my son will love it but he is such a shorty there is no way he will be tall enough to ride RSR!

Yeah, that will be a bummer if he can't go on RSR. However, the entire area is so fun for little Cars fans that I think it may be a little easier to distract him!

Day 2 Continued: Sunday March 1st

Now that we had made it to the ultimate destination in DS’s mind, we were ready to explore Cars Land! He was truly in awe as we strolled down the street further into Radiator Springs. It was so incredible to see the look in his eyes as his favorite movie unfolded before him. He wanted to check out Fillmore’s first because that was the first place we came to.

by disneymom1024, on Flickr

Then he and DH decided to take a ride on Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree. I don’t remember it having a specific pregnancy warning, but knowing how those tractors whip you around and not being able to take Dramamine were plenty enough reasons for me to decide to sit out. However, as we were parking the stroller for them to ride, DS was distracted by Mater’s Petting Zoo so he went to check that out first.

After that, the boys went ahead and got in line while I waited off to the side hoping to get some pictures of them. This ride is tricky because it starts off as one line but then you can be placed on one of two track systems so I tried to position myself kind of in the middle to where I could get to either track once I saw where they were going to end up. Meanwhile in the queue, DH was taking some photos.

Can’t see much of DS in this one except his hair flying around!

They both seemed to really enjoy the ride, especially DS who came off yelling that those tractors were outta control! His first ride in Cars Land was a definite success.

We gathered up the stroller and started making our way down the street, taking it all in. A detour was made at Sarge’s Surplus Hut because DH and I were hoping to find a cool Cars Land souvenir for DS and I also wanted to look for something Cars Land related for my godchild whose birthday was coming up and also loves Lightning & Mater.

While the store does have a TON of Cars merchandise, none of it was really what we were looking for. Most of it is Cars and Planes related toys that can be bought anywhere, and the one Cars Land t-shirt didn’t really look like something DS would wear. But we did come across a great photo op to announce on Facebook that we were expecting!

It was mostly outdoor seating there, but there is a little gazebo with a few tables underneath, so that’s where we sat to escape the rain while we ate. By the time we were finishing up, the rain had stopped so since we were right there, we went to check out the wait at Toy Story Mania. At DCA, this attraction does not offer FP, but for the most part you don’t need it there. Since we had been experiencing such low crowds and short waits all over, we thought it might not be too bad. Once we got over there, though, the wait was 40 minutes, which is not terrible for that particular attraction but we weren’t up for waiting that long with a 4 year old.

DH must have taken this while walking over because I don’t think we ever rode it.

We decided instead that DH would go ride California Screamin’ while DS and I rode on the nearby King Triton’s Carousel. But within a couple minutes, DH had joined us on the Carousel because the line at Screamin’ was also on the long side.

A family carouselfie
When we came off of the Carousel, it was starting to rain again, so we were on the hunt for something indoors...

Yay I'm glad DS' first ride in Carsland was a success! He looks so happy in all the pics! Especially love the ones trying on the different hats :)

Glad DS enjoyed the tractor ride so much ... I can definitely see mine wanting to ride that a lot .... because, well, tractors!

bummer that some of the lines were long and you weren't getting on everything you wanted but a spin on a carousel is always fun
