PHXscuba's TR: Summer Sweet 16 at DLR -- New Photos 8/19

I'm glad it improved for you! I know you really wanted to be there! Was Wetzel's Pretzels good? We go from time to time to the one in our mall. To me it's just okay.

I let my daughter pick and she got the pretzel bites. I helped eat them, but I was mostly eating to have something in my stomach. We drank lots of water, soda, and a shake, but I hadn't had much to eat for the previous 10 hours. I knew I wouldn't sleep as well with an empty stomach. I don't feel the "overpriced" effect as much with only-at-Disney foods, but the Wetzel's you can get at any mall is double the price at DTD.

Ooh game show thread time!

1. Yes, but not until another time.
2. No way! I bet you saw others, lots others.
3. Hmm, I'm going to guess a ride malfunction or this is a trick question and there wasn't one.

I love the t-shirts! My DD Kody has that one. I like the ear headband you picked I think I might get that one.

Monday, part 2 (our DCA day)

After congratulating ourselves on our successful snowman encounter, we were due up to use the Soarin' Fastpasses we had collected earlier.

It was a good thing they needed FPs I was photographing artistically, or I would have been left behind!

Trying to take pictures inside that long, dark hall took a little playing with the camera settings. Like our ears? First pair I've ever owned!:earsgirl: We ended up in the sweet spot of Soarin, B-1, without even having to ask! I really didn't notice a big difference with the digital projections. That ride relaxes me so much.

After Soarin, we finally found ...

CHURROS!!
We knew we weren't too far from lunch, so we got two and split them. Nom, nom, nom. I read after returning that the Tio Pepe's brand at Smart & Final are the same kind used at DLR. I may or may not now have a box of them in my freezer to try ...

We collected Grizzly River Run Fastpasses for after lunch on our way by, but the World of Color machines were still spitting out tickets for the early show, and the CM said they still had "thousands" left. So I stopped haunting those FP machines from a while and considered it a good omen overall for park-crowded-ness.

The rest of Paradise Pier was on our list since we were on that side of the park. Ariel's Undersea Adventure was a walk-on.

I had never been on the Golden Zephyr! I think it has been closed a couple times I have been to DCA, for high winds or renovation. I think my family rode it one time while I was standing in line for RSR FPs. Fun to check it off my Disneyland bucket list, but I am not a huge fan of spinning rides. Which is why my friend and I sent the girls on the swings and took a short break in the shade instead!:cool2: <-- us

Despite the churro infusion, we were starting to get hungry (Need. Protein.) and we wanted to eat before it struck noon and everyone else had the same idea. Smokejumpers it is! The new decor was nice, and the food was reliable. It's nice that everything comes plain and you can dress it at the toppings bar as you like. We all ate well!

After lunch, we finally got to go on the one attraction that I have hoped to ride every time I have been to DCA -- Grizzly River Run. Remember, DH loathes raft rides. So between having him along, or having really cool weather a couple of other fall/winter visits, I have never been on GRR! We can check that box now. We had a fun raft with a young couple and couple of Mexican-tour-group boys. Everyone was pretty happy/silly/excited, no downers who would ruin it by getting spritzed (unlike the shrieking Japanese woman in my raft at Sea World last summer).

And wet was the word! The ride was wilder than I expected and turned us all around. We were doing good -- splashed but not soaked, until we hit a mid-water geyser near the end of the ride. I think it was supposed to turn off as we arrived, but the timing must have been off, because firehose!! It's a good thing it was a warm day!

After we got off, I asked a young woman standing near the lockers to take a picture of the four of use in front of the offending geyser, with my little point-and-shoot Canon. She took the picture and walked off, but a nagging suspicion had me check my camera. She never pushed the button all the way down!! It's not like this is a hard camera to operate, and the image flashes on the screen after the picture takes. Seriously, do we have a generation that doesn't know how to push a button unless it is a touchscreen?? There wasn't really anyone close by, so I settled for a picture of the girls together. Maybe I need a selfie stick? :rotfl2:

We loved Soarin enough to collect another set of FPs on our way by again. Can you tell we are crossing the park a lot? We wandered into Off the Page to look at the cool art, plus a book of sketches my friend's daughter had admired on their trip a few weeks earlier. (Spoiler alert: someone is getting it for her birthday soon!)

Tower of Terror was briefly down earlier when we walked by, so we moseyed back to see what the wait looked like now. It said 20 minutes. We asked each other, "is that like a tow truck 20 minutes?" i.e. three hours? Luckily for us, it was a "Disney 20 minutes," and we were standing at a library door in about 10 minutes!!

Trip Advisor gives it just one star for cleanliness

After that we rode Monsters Inc -- I think the wait was longer that ToT -- and decided we were hungry enough for ice cream. Very happy to see an ice cream cart right on the street in Hollywood. We also noticed that the Aladdin show was only about 20 minutes away, so we decided to eat our ice cream in line!

Yes, those are my daughter's black fingernails clutching the super-cold ice cream sandwich
I noticed when I sat down Aladdin's air conditioning that I was still a bit damp in the back from GRR!!

The entre-act was over and the scrim was supposed to rise to show on the Cave of Wonders and Jafar. Instead, it stopped about head-height and they couldn't raise it any farther. The house lights came up and the very pleasant Disney announcer said that the show was pausing for (obviously) technical problems. I didn't get a picture of the reluctant screen before the main curtain came down. Thankfully this time, we were stuck inside an air-conditioned theater while something got fixed!! It only took about 5 minutes before they resumed the show with the Cave of Wonders, and everything went off without a hitch from that point. The Genie was his usual on-point joking self. I could watch that show every time just for him and not get tired of it. DD saw the carpet fly this time (we missed its return by a week last time she saw it).

We noticed while waiting for Aladdin that our Soarin FPs would expire about 15 minutes before the show ended. My friend's daughter, ever the optimist, convinced us that we could still try to use the FP without setting off any CM radar. So we gave them to her (she's much cuter than me) and we breezed into the FP line without trouble. I don't think I'd try this at RSR or on the busiest day of the year -- YMMV -- but it's worth a try if you miss your FP window, and have a cute kid or teen with you.

We finally got FPs for the late World of Color after that. I figure we wouldn't have trouble getting one, but I didn't want last choice of standby and wondering where we'd end up. DD and I wanted to ride Screamin' one more time, so my friend and her daughter waited while we went in the single rider line. We only waited behind about 5 people in the SR line, and ended up riding together anyways!! Score!

The techno-trickery of this photo is fun
I have a bunch of photos of the next couple things we did, so I will leave you with lengthening shadows and my lame attempt to photograph them.

Sounds great! I'll never understand why the Ariel ride never has a line. I love that ride!

I am really enjoying reading your TR with all the beautiful photos. I am glad that you all made it to DL after all the van trouble. The girls look great in the match shirts and Mickey ears. The moms look pretty good too! :-) My DD is a big character fan so Olaf will be one of our many stops! We are down to 9 days before we are at DL. DD and I even went out and bought 50s inspired dresses so that we can dress up on the 17th. Luckily, we found cool and comfortable dresses that we can stay in all day. :D

What a crazy start to your trip! I'm glad you eventually got there in one piece :thumbsup2 Funny story about the car rentals, my parents rented a Suburban to pick us up from the Long Beach airport since we needed the space for 7 people (3 in carseats) and all our luggage. That car was a BEAST, my Dad and DH took it back and got a Tahoe once we got our luggage to the hotel - no one wanted to drive it after that :rotfl:I was bummed the pools closed as early as they did at the PPH, there were a few nights I would've loved to sit in the hot tub or take a swim after we got back from the parks and put our girls to bed. We also had a lot of trouble staying connected to the WiFi there through the week, my Dad always has a small router when he travels so he set up a hot spot but even that had trouble keeping a connection.

Your first morning in CA sounds like a blast! Love the Olaf pics, we never got around to meeting him - I wish we had! Those ears are great and so are the girls' shirts :thumbsup2

So, what happened to the van? When my battery light went on and off on my car, I took to dealer. Yep, new alternator. What's another several hundred dollars into my 8 year old car. I think its on its second life. Great report so far.

Thanks! All of us have too many Disney shirts!! I think your Olaf wait will be pretty short -- he's not visible from the walkway so a lot of people don't know he's there.

Yes, that Suburban was BIG. If I hadn't driven my husband's F-150 before, I would have never been able to handle it. I don't know how some of my friends do it on a regular basis. For me it's the parking, not the driving. We opted for valet parking at the PPH because I didn't want to chance finding an easy parking spot (straight in and out) at 10:30 at night. $16 total extra for 2 nights was totally worth my sanity at that point.

Yep, alternator it was!! My friend got the call that day that it was for sure the alternator (what everyone from her husband to the tow truck driver had speculated) and that the could have it fixed before we drove back that way on Wednesday. So at least that part was predictable.

I have to drive up to Utah and Idaho next week with my 7-year-old van and I am upping my AAA membership, just in case!!

I'm here too! I read the first parts of the TR at different intervals. I'm glad someone finally asked about the van and what the issue was, as I had planned to ask that very question when I finally got around to posting here! So it was the alternator.

Well, if not for the fact that I knew you ended up at DLR and had a great time, I would have been seriously nervous for you and the other girls that you were stuck forever in the middle of nowhere, in the heat, with a prison not far away, and unable to get to DLR! I know how stressful and frustrating that little 'delay' must have been -- other people probably would not have handled the setback with as much aplomb and grace as it sounds like your group did -- but, thankfully, you made it to the PPH and to DLR (without being dismembered!). I'm so, so glad that you all had each other and that you didn't get stuck by yourself, or with just two of you.

Now that the delay in the desert is long behind you, I think we (the readers) can all safely say that it makes for an interesting story and lead-in to the trip! Having a little bit of excitement, for lack of a better word, and some obstacles at the beginning of the trip lends a 'will they or won't they get to Disneyland, and will they ever get rescued' element to the story.

Welcome Sherry! Glad you are reading along on our little adventure, which ended up with a little more adventure than we planned. I joked with the girls that the tow truck -- and I don't mean Mater -- was our first ride of the trip.

Although it messed up our first night, it was probably better to have the delay on the front end while we knew there was a sweet prize waiting, than on the way back, when we would have just been so done with it all.

Monday, part 3 (our DCA day)

We decided we wanted more FPs for Tower of Terror (it's one of my friend's daughter's favorite rides and would also rank up there for the rest of us). We zigzagged back through Pacific Wharf and Bugs Land and got after-dark FPs for ToT. We were kind of undecided on what to do next -- ToT standby was an hour, we knew we wanted to wait until after dark for another spin on RSR, we'd ridden the Apostrophe Rides (Screamin' and Soarin') twice. Outside ToT, we noticed lots of people on curbs and suddenly realized the Pixar parade was going to begin right there in less than 10 minutes. So we found a spot in the shade right in front of the Aladdin line. Complete with backrests while we waited!

I had never actually seen more than a few minutes of this parade and it was a lot cuter than I thought it might be. Pixar is a favorite with big and little kids.

The girls were watching the dancers that accompanied the floats and deciding which costumes and shoes they would want to wear if they were Disney dancers. :lovestruc Very sweet.

We sort of followed the parade down the street and thought we might duck into the Animation Building -- the girls wanted to check out the Beast's Library. At the entryway into the building, a CM stopped us and asked if we wanted to see Anna and Elsa. Thinking they were trying to redirect us to a FP machine partway down the street, we told them, no not if the line is long. She told us there was currently no wait to see those uber-popular characters!! No Fast Pass needed!

We entered the room with one other family with a toddler boy and a preschooler girl. I could tell the little boy was absolutely in love and we told them to go first because our kiddos could probably wait just a little longer!! :cutie: Watching those kids with the princesses was almost more fun than meeting them ourselves.

Do you realize how many WDW people would hate me if I posted this on that side of the boards? To meet Anna and Elsa there, you have to reserve a FP 60 days in advance -- they run out in hours after the window opens. Even when you return it can be a 20-30 minute wait. And we waltzed in. I like to think of it as karma's way of making up for Sweatbox Sunday.

After our royal audience, we found the Beast's Library and everyone took turns finding out which character they were most like. I think the girls ended up being EVE (from Wall-E) and Alice in Wonderland. I decided to answer the final question as a villain and I turned out to be Ursula! I've always been partial to the Little Mermaid.

We were starting to get hungry and my friend and I wanted bread bowls from Pacific Wharf. Eating there was made possible by the absence of our picky eaters, my DD13 and her DS12. The girls had sandwiches, my friend had broccoli cheese soup, and I had the clam chowder. No photos, but chowder isn't particularly photogenic anyways. It was nice to relax while eating dinner at our leisure since we had done so much already.

Carsland was nearby so we took a spin with Mater. I would rate it more fun than our previous day's tow truck ride, but just as cramped. And we didn't really go anywhere. Our real-life tow trucker driver was kind of zany, but he had more teeth than Mater.

I was hoping to be in Carsland around dusk to see the neon come on (part of my Disney bucket list as yet unfulfilled). We asked a CM who looked more official than most, and he looked it up on a card and quoted us an exact time -- 8:07. Wow, I wasn't expecting down to the minute timing! We still had about 40 minutes before that magic minute, so we decided to see the Ant-Man preview in the Bugs Life theater nearby.

I haven't really paid much attention to the movie -- I'm not a big fan of watching movie trailers. I didn't know they were using many of the theater's effects capabilities, like the poke in the back and the bugs running under your legs!! So that was a surprise!

We still had a few minutes after emerging from underground, so parked ourselves on a park bench just outside Carsland. The girls wandered off to take a few artsy photos, and so did I.

I love Disney balloons, even though I have never owned one

8:00 was here, so I went to stand near the middle of the street (I tried to stay out of the main traffic flow) just into Carsland. I was not the only one lingering with a camera. Right on the dot of 8:07 ...

It was really cool to finally see it happen. People stopped and watched, if only for a moment. I love that it's a little, unpublished detail. Disney could have gone two other ways -- just turn on the neon at a set time and thereyago. Or they could have made it a Big Deal Show that would have been crowded and crazy and confusing, maybe a little like the short projection show on It's a Small World during Christmas. Instead, it's a tiny treat for those in the know. It would be even better if they could do it when it was a lot darker, but I imagine the lawyers would object to people tripping in the gloom while they waited for the big moment.

After that, we collected ourselves and got in the Single Rider Line for Radiator Springs Racers. It was about a 15 minute wait. I had done the ride in the dark before and I really like it at night.

Obviously with Single Rider, you get put with an unknown party. I was in a car with 5 members of a Hispanic family. (just for background, I speak some Spanish) The lady sitting next to me obviously had no idea what she was getting into. She just knew she was inside a race car and was a little apprehensive. She clutched the handles tight through the first few turns but seemed to relax a bit through the indoor town scenes. When we got to the race starting point, I thought it might be courteous to warn her what was coming, so I leaned over and told her "ahora muy rapido," which means, "now we're going to go really fast!" Her eyes got really big and she squealed through the whole race. After the finish line as we slowed down, she asked me if we were done and I assured her it was over. It was pretty funny to be on the ride with a first-timer.

By this time our FPs for Tower of Terror were almost ready, so we took our time walking through Bugs Land at night on our way. While we were waiting for each other after RSR, someone had given my daughter an extra FP for ToT. Obviously we didn't need it. We still had a few minutes before our ToT FPs were good, so I planted myself near the entrance to try to find a single rider who could use it. Finally, a man and his scooter-bound wife walked up and he inquired about his wife going through the line with him if she wasn't riding. I passed off the FP and they ended up in line just ahead of us. I quickly realized the man was highly visually impaired. Luckily for him and his wife, we didn't get routed upstairs after the library.

We finally got to the loading platform and waited. And waited and waited. CM started poking their heads out from the doors and asking for help. We wondered if it was a "protein spill." My friend looked a little green at the idea, but I assured her it would be the cleanest ride all day!! The CMs finally emerged and I casually asked what was going on. No protein spill: someone took a cup of POPCORN on the Tower of Terror!!popcorn::Seriously, what did they think would happen?! We finally boarded our elevator and had the usual fun.

I wish I had seen the popcorned elevator photo
I will also note that the CMs were super-helpful to our visually impaired friend. They put him front row on the aisle right across from me, so he didn't have to climb over people. I was prepared after the ride stopped to assist him, but the CM was at his elbow before I could even stand up, and he guided him to where his wife was waiting. Bravo to the well-trained and compassionate CMs.

It was now time to go to the World of Color holding pen to wait. We had hoped to get snacks along the way. My friend's DD really wanted fresh popcorn (inspired by ToT?), but we couldn't find any carts open that had it. We finally settled for ice cream near the pier. Our waiting area was over the bridge back beyond Ariel's Grotto. We had just enough time to finish our ice cream bars/sandwiches before we got to our tired feet again and entered the WoC area.

Despite looking large in the holding pen, the crowd dispersed over the wide WoC area and we got a spot in the center behind a planter, most of the way back (no spray jets for us).

Bad selfie, good show spot
We all pulled out phones and caught up on texts, social media, etc. I happened to look at the app with the pedometer. Guess how many steps I had taken that day: 24,000!! 12.14 miles!! (Spoiler alert #1: I checked it back at the PPH before bed and it was 25,700 and 12.75 miles) (Spoiler alert #2: I didn't get an exact count, but our next day was HIGHER!)

The show started and people of course pulled out their Go-Pros and selfie sticks. They were far enough away from us that it didn't really bother me, but ask me again after the next night's experiences!! My friend was startled and screamed when the air jet right in front of us fired off. I had no idea that was there.

My review of the show: Loved that Walt Disney was a big part of it, along with Mickey. Not as wild about their usage of Neil Patrick Harris. I think NPH is just fine, and I know he is a big Disney fan. But they had so many options with old video of Walt and having Mickey say whatever they wanted. By the time they started putting NPH into the video clips of the rides/movies, it was too much. Later in my mind, I tried out several other respected actors or celebrity Disney fans in his place and I didn't like any of them any better, so it wasn't just him. I would have been fine with him (or anyone) introducing the show and then getting out of the way or serving as voiceover. We all agreed we like the original show better overall. I know they have the ability to freshen and change the show -- like updating the Star Wars scenes or adding whatever new movies come out -- but the NPH stuff is pretty integral. Plus what happens if the unthinkable happened and he pulled a Bill Cosby or something else icky? Just my 2 cents.

Someone on the boards told me about the "Kiss Goodnight" for the show that happens after the closing music and most everyone exits. They play a sweet song called "Come to Disneyland" with just the colored water jets and it was wonderful. It was worth waiting for (along with about 10 percent of the people) and they should have used that in the show! That was the part that stayed with me. If you go, stick around instead of being herded out like cattle.

With that final memory warm in our hearts, we staggered back to the PPH. The girls showered and washed their hair, and my friend and I pre-packed up so we could get going early the next morning. I took some ibuprofen to stave off the sore legs I knew would come, and fell into a tired sleep populated only by oversized mice, airborne popcorn, and cinnamon breakfast delights.

We like the kiss goodnight too. How was the PPH? We have done the Disneyland Hotel and the Grand C. My kids liked both, but liked the style of the GC the most. Next time, to save money, may try the PPH.

Great pictures.

Another great update! I want to make sure we see the lights turn on in DCA. This is an area where the girls and I may split ways. They have plans to just spend o e day at most in DCA during our five days. I will be there more. Good thing they're both adults!

Confession time, I've never watched WoC. I've watched video of it but not in person. Maybe this trip.

The Pixar parade is my DD's favorite parade. She has a Lotso bear that she bought in DCA a few years back and she always waves him at Woody who always act surprised to see Lotso. And I remember DD dancing down Route 66 to Sh-boom when the neon lights came on. It is a catchy tune! We like the original WOC, didn't care too much for the Christmas one and will have to see this new one in 7 days! We are doing the WOC dining at Carthay Circle so looking forward to getting good views. Great shots of you all with Elsa and Anna!

Following! I've only been to Disneyland once but it gave me the Disney bug! I can't wait to go back with my stepson next year!

We have stayed twice at the PPH now. Once with the fam two year ago, and this trip. I like that's it's really just as close as the DLH for less, but the pool complex is much less elaborate -- which I would weight more or less depending on weather and how much pool time you plan. It's a fun beachy style, which I personally love. Almost all the rooms have a daybed that would fit everyone but a large adult, so if you want three beds, it's more of a "sure bet" than the other onsite hotels. I think if you are wanting to stay onsite for the benefits but the other two are really $$$, it's a good option.

I really wanted to see the Christmas version two years ago, but high winds stopped it less than 5 minutes into it.:( I love Christmas so I might have really like it. Some day ...

I know a lot of people were less than enthused about DCA when it first opened, but it has really grown into a first-class park than warrants a full day, at least for me, especially with a lot of great entertainment.

I was surprised I got such a good answer about the neon lighting out of a CM. I think he was more of an operations/entertainment guy compared with some of the CMs I asked last time, who were working food or rides and were pretty clueless.

If you can wait up until a late show of WoC, it was really much less crowded, and hanging around afterward was much more pleasant than the usual slow shuffle out, especially since the park had closed.

Sorry about being AWOL for a week! I was on vacation visiting family in some places that are a lot cooler than Phoenix in the summer! Lots of family, lots of fun, lots of good weather, and LOTS of driving for me (DH had to work)!

But now I am back to continue the TR!!

Tuesday, part 1 (DL birth-day!)

After such a long day on Monday, it will come as no surprise that getting out of bed was haaaard the next morning. I dutifully got up to my alarm and showered, and then woke everyone else up as we staggered around. We packed up all of our stuff and left it with bell services. Once again, despite our best efforts to wake early and move quickly, we still didn't walk out of the PPH until 7 a.m., as EMH was starting. We really should have been about 20-30 minutes ahead of that but haaaaard to get up, going, and everyone together for a long day.

First birthday picture of DD, now officially 16!

I have been semi-obsessed with silhouette pictures lately

We got to the Disneyland turnstiles by about 7:10 but it took about 15 minutes to get in with the long lines. Since more people have access to EMH and Early Entry at DL by hotel or 3-day-plus tickets, it's much more crowded. And I knew that going in. Staying onsite is really more of an advantage for DCA getting in early.

We wanted to hit Space Mountain first as it is a favorite and has the unfortunate luck of breaking down sometimes. The line seemed long-ish, but with no FP returning it moved quicker than it looked.

Together, on her birthday

We made it through and were off the ride and in line for Star Tours before the gates opened officially at 8:00. So not my best EMH ever, but we were still "one jump ahead" of the crowds. And with Peter Pan not open in Fantasyland (and having two teens and no little kids with us), we felt better about not knocking more rides out early in the day. We mostly stayed ahead of the crowds for the first few hours.

Star Tours is one of my longtime favorites. I do great as long as I don't sit in the very front row or off to the very left or right. We got the Naboo sequence, which is one of my favorites, in part because of the ending, and partly because it took me a dozen times riding it to see that version!!

We swiftly crossed the hub and got Fast Passes to ride Indiana Jones a little later in the morning. Pirates of the Caribbean was a walk-on, so we got in line. I don't do dark-ride photos because my camera isn't up to it and I will not be that person screwing around with their flash when they don't know how to use their camera! The POTC scene with the chasing pirates and ladies was missing the last set (maybe they went to Disney World on vacation?) and the hissing cats in the little side scene were gone, making it seem as if the pirate cooing "here kitty, kitty" was having feline hallucinations!

DD16 took out her phone and said it had been vibrating in her purse during the whole ride as her friends started waking up and realized it was her birthday (not sure if she posted something??) So she got a lot of texts that day!! I'm glad she got to spend the day in Disneyland but the rest of her friends could be in touch with us via text and Instagram.

We were all hungry and not excited to repeat the Great Churro Hunt of Monday. I asked the first CM I saw in New Orleans Square if any of the places serving beignets were open. Lucky for us, we were mere feet from the wonderful window outside Cafe Orleans, near the train station.

Birthday beignets!!

Pretty awnings

I am going to admit that I am a bad Disney foodie/fan and it was the first time I have had beignets at Disneyland. It definitely will not be the last!! So sweet and fluffy and delicious!! We got 6 to split between the 4 of us and could have definitely eaten more. Nom nom. I also have been told I need to try them at Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen Express, which I will do for research's sake.

Very few people had made it to NOS by then, so we walked onto Haunted Mansion to check out the new Hatbox Ghost. He was very cool indeed and I am excited that Disneyland is continuing to plus their existing rides and give people in the know something new to be excited about. Of course we all still want new rides and lands, but not at the expense of letting classic attractions fall apart.

Splash Mountain only had a 10-minute wait, but it was a little early to get potentially soaked, so we acquired another set of FastPasses to ride later in the morning. We decided to walk over to Big Thunder, hoping our short-line luck would continue to hold.

Big Thunder's posted wait was only about 10 minutes and I think we waited even less. We walked by that way plenty of times during the day and the FP was always the minimum 45-50 minutes out, even late at night. It's one of my favorite rides, so I'm grateful it doesn't run out of FPs like Space Mountain or Indiana Jones. Honestly, there's enough to do close by -- NOS rides, riverboat, food, etc. -- that I don't see why anyone wouldn't get a FP, do a couple things, and then go back. No reason to ever wait in a 45-minute standby line there.

I had not been on Big Thunder in several years as the ride was closed the entire year I had an AP in 2013-14. So I finally got to see the new effects and refreshed ride. We rode in the back rows, which is my favorite location but makes it hard to see the dynamite effect on the final hill. Don't worry, we'll be back later to ride it again!!

Despite the distance across the park, we decided to get another FP for Space as our window had opened. We knew that the crowds would grow and were still trying to work the "one jump ahead" strategy.

If one single picture could explain why I am willing to get to the park early, above is it. God bless traditional FP. Yep, that's 3 FPS, pulled between 8:30 and 10:00, before using any of them.

It was time to use our Indiana Jones FP so we hopped across the hub once again. I think this was when we ditched the sweatshirts and got a locker for the day. The IJ FP line has an early merge with the standby line, but I don't mind the line too much as it is indoors and cool to look at. But no cell service that deep underground for most of the line!!

Who let the new driver pilot the jeep?!

Now it was a good time to use our Splash Mountain FP, a little before 11:00. In the hour and a half since pulling the FP, the line had grown to about 45 minutes as the day warmed up. This FP line is the opposite of Indy, as the merge is practically on the loading dock (in fact, I will admit to once coming around the last corner to find no one in either line and ducking back into the standby line so I could run back around again with my FP ). We got pretty wet on the ride overall, but late morning was the perfect time to ride. We were getting near our lunch reservation time and thought about riding Jungle Cruise, but the line was long and violated "PHXscuba's Rule of JC:" Thou shalt not get in line if they are using the upstairs portion of the queue. It's never failed me before.

So we were a little early for our lunch reservation at Carnation Cafe, DD16's request for her birthday. I will leave you there as we check in on Main Street!

Once again, the cliffhanger questions:

What Disney celebrity would we see?
What treat would we cross multiple lands to find?
What ride breakdown actually made me happy?

All this and more in the next installment!! pixiedust:
