Do you buy trip insurance

We are doing a cruise in January. All healthy and no medical issues. 9 day caribbean cruise, would you get trip insurance. I've priced it out, seems like a lot BUT then I think if weather issues getting to port and home in the winter. I was able to book non-stop down and a return flight with layover in Atlanta.

Not generally. We were thinking of renting DVC points once and that had to be booked really far out to get our choice. We would have for that.

Not for all trips , but for a cruise yes. I paid $150 for 5 of us for a cruise this summer. Have you checked out insuremytrip.com ?

We buy a yearly travel insurance plan which covers all medical (including a helicopter evacuation if needed, and hotel for one person to stay near the hospital and flights home for the injured person and the one extra, if needed) for vacations up to 6 weeks in length.

Other than that, we take our chances and figure if we have to cover emergency travel o our own we still come out ahead of insuring each separate trip--then again we travel 6-8 times per year, so it would add up for us.

I do when cruising. It's one of those things you hope you will not need to use, but happy you have it when you need it! Peace of mind, really.

I have used my trip insurance once. One of my pieces of luggage never made it to the ship. Dropped it off with all the other luggage at the terminal, never to be seen again! Still waiting on it :rolleyes1 That was back in 2011:headache:

For a cruise yes. Just because you're healthy doesn't mean there won't be an accident on board the ship. Yes, there's a medical center on board, but there's a limit on what they can do.

Also, do you have anyone "at home" who might be in poor health or otherwise requiring you to cut your trip short?

I've never gotten trip insurance for Disney trips. For cruises though when a medical evacuation could run into the 10's of thousands of dollars, I feel it's a small price to pay.

Are you talking trip insurance or medical? My work benefits give me medical coverage for out of town travel. I have trip insurance on my credit card.
I think it's very unwise to travel without insurance.

I'm going to check with credit card to see what's covered if any. Will price out online later also. Thanks for advice.

I would never step a toe outside Canada without travel medical and due to certain situations at home have always also purchased cancellation and interruption as well. We evaluate the need based on 2 criterial: How much would it cost me to get home fast in case of emergency and how willing am I to lose the non-refundable part of my trip costs if I have to cancel before-hand. In light of that, a couple hundred bucks seems like a reasonable hedge.

For our upcoming trip I blew it though. We ended up cancelling our original plans (which were fully insured) and quickly booking a new set of arrangements which required full pre-payment on the spot. I didn't "click the right box" to include insurance and typically for cruises you can't purchase it after the 100% non-refundable period has elapsed. I've got adequate travel medical through my work benefits but I'm now at risk for the rest of it. Not my preferred scenario by any means.

I always buy trip insurance when traveling outside the country. What if someone gets seriously ill? Most medical plans in the US don't cover you outside the United States. Also, keep in mind that some cruise destinations have smaller hospitals that aren't set up to deal with big medical issues. Medical evacuation can be very expensive. I get my insurance through insuremytrip.com. Luckily we've never had to use it, but it's there in case we need it.

Depends on how much "non-refundable" money I have into the trip. If it's more than $1000, yes, I buy the insurance. Example: we went to Mexico in March. The "non-refundable" was over $6000. Insurance was $175. I bought the insurance.

In June we went to San Diego. Didn't buy insurance. The big expense up front was airfare, which was "non-redundable" but with $100 per ticket change fee, could be applied to other airfare for a year. We travel more often than that. So, my potential loss there was $300.

Always for a cruise. Not only for medical emergencies, but unlike other vacations, once you are within a certain window of sailing, the trip is 100% non-refundable, and you can't even move it to another date. Unemployment, house fire, accident, death, illness - total loss.

Yes I do for cruises. In 17 cruises I only had to use it once. And I am happy I had it!

Everytime we travel - never needed it until I received an electric shock in Thailand, fractured my T12 and spent over 6 weeks in the hospital over there as I couldn't fly

I've bought it twice for beach trips in Aug/Sept. I figure it's during hurricane season. It was only $180, and if we have to evacuate we can at least recoup some of the rental $ back.

We buy trip insurance for all cruises, and other trips if very much $$ is non-refundable. You just never know what could happen. We filed a claim the year my Dad passed away, as the day of his funeral was the day we were supposed to fly to Florida for a cruise. We flew down the following day, but had to pay $359 more for the difference in the flight rate. We filed the claim when we returned from the cruise, and 2 weeks later we received a check for that amount. For us, trip insurance is just another expense of the trip, and gives us peace of mind.
